Apple responds to Xbox Project xCloud absence, citing iOS policy | Windows Central

Wow. MS flat out calls out Apples Bullshit:

"Our testing period for the Project xCloud preview app for iOS has expired. Unfortunately, we do not have a path to bring our vision of cloud gaming with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate to gamers on iOS via the Apple App Store," Microsoft tells Windows Central. "Apple stands alone as the only general purpose platform to deny consumers from cloud gaming and game subscription services like Xbox Game Pass. And it consistently treats gaming apps differently, applying more lenient rules to non-gaming apps even when they include interactive content."

"All games available in the Xbox Game Pass catalog are rated for content by independent industry ratings bodies such as the ESRB and regional equivalents. We are committed to finding a path to bring cloud gaming with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate to the iOS platform. We believe that the customer should be at the heart of the gaming experience and gamers tell us they want to play, connect and share anywhere, no matter where they are. We agree."

Xbox doesnt deserve 30% of Fornite microtransactions.

What BS false equivalency is this?

Fortnight was coded to run natively on Xbox hardware. Xcloud games are being streamed and wait for it.... are also running natively on Xbox hardware. Not a single Xcloud game will be running natively on any IOS device.

Apple doesn't get any revenue from Netflix, because you sign up somewhere else and it merely streams a video. This isn't "software to other software" as they seem to be defending this with, you upload some simple controls and essentually get a video feed back. That's not what fortnite on xbox is doing, if you didn't understand the distinction.

Microsoft would likely never allow a streaming game provider to have an app on Xbox either though..

Apple looks worse here.. but it really is a loophole essentially in the purpose of their storefront.

As it would be a loophole if a game decided to let you buy MTX via a "streaming" client on XBox.. and they said "Well TECHNICALLY this is just streaming you the video of the MTX buying screen so it doesn't count!"

Apple's reasoning is full of shit though; they should just come out and say it.. "We see this as a loophole for bypassing our payment processing."

Really? You don't think Microsoft would be happy to have a Nintendo streaming service on the Xbox? Come on now...

Apple makes a lot of money from mobile games (that have in-app purchases) and by allowing people to stream games via Xcloud, Apple won't be getting any revenue whatsoever. Maybe Apple tried to force Microsoft to pay them a cut of all in-game transactions made while playing via an iOS device and Microsoft said "nope"?

Hard to know without having insider knowledge.

Can't really think of any upside for Apple (in terms of business) in allowing Xcloud onto their devices.

I'm confused. I use the IOS streaming app for Steam. At least I did a few months back (did something change?). What's the difference?

The actual problem is that customers would be able to go to the Xbox home page or Console store app and purchase new Xbox games, which would then be playable on your precious iPhone. Apple doesn't get it's 30% cut. They would prefer you to continue buying iPhone-playable games on the app store so they can continue making money.
Are you sure that every game you buy will be available on xCloud? I thought just the Game Pass Games are playable.

I guess apple doesn't want Xcloud to take customers away from their apple arcade service. Apple customers will have to settle for pacman and tower defence games I guess.

Yeah sure, just in case an xbox game does not reach the quality standards of the app-le store...
Apple is being wise denying all this pile of money. Just in case a game on xbox does not provide the level of experience they guarantee on their devices...

Everybody wants a piece of that pie.

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple was asking for a cut in sales made inside the app.
Looks to me like MS doesnt want to pay that 30%
Apple doesn't deserve 30% of GP Ultimate subs.

Microsoft will pay. They are an innovator in the online gaming space. They understand and appreciate that it costs money to bring a premium online experience to gaming using the internet.

I hope they resolve this soon. I’m getting it unless it’s on iOS.

How did Amazon get away with not giving a cut anyway?

Certainly for the Kindle app, you can browse the book store, but you can’t purchase anything.

This is just straight up Apple trying to drive subs to Arcade, rather than a competitor. But remember when Microsoft said the same thing about Xbox Live, and then allowed EA into the walled garden.

The biggest nonsense from Apple, imo, is that they say every game needs to be reviewed. All these games are already reviewed by a proper world known 3rd party organisation, namely ESRB. There is no reason for an extra review... Might get a Surface Duo because of this.

Horrible approach Apple have to these services. They have had a beef with Spotify and many others. I will septics with iOS but I am getting razer phone for xCloud that I will use as a handheld

Apple is 100% in the wrong here

As a streaming platform (viewer) there is nothing running on the XCloud app that could alter what's running on your phone any differently from game to game. They're just trying to put up bureaucratic roadblocks and call it "safety".
It reminds me of « for the children » (crossplay)

So Fortnite are paying MS 30% for the hardware you paid for? What has running natively have to do with it?

I don’t know if I can say this here, since it involves profanity, but a big fuck you to Apple. To think I was a fan of their shit...

This was always the risk with Microsoft's "we don't care about selling consoles" approach.

The services sector is going to be highly competitive and companies will absolutely do what they can to scupper the competition.

"Our customers enjoy great apps and games from millions of developers, and gaming services can absolutely launch on the App Store as long as they follow the same set of guidelines applicable to all developers, including submitting games individually for review, and appearing in charts and search."

Now I get it. Microsoft hates giving away data of how their games are actually doing.

Facebook Joins Xbox In Criticising Apple's Gaming Policies

“Unfortunately, we had to remove gameplay functionality entirely in order to get Apple’s approval on the standalone Facebook Gaming app — meaning iOS users have an inferior experience to those using Android. “We’re staying focused on building communities for the more than 380 million people who play games on Facebook every month — whether Apple allows it in a standalone app or not.”

“This is shared pain across the games industry, which ultimately hurts players and devs and severely hamstrings innovation on mobile for other types of formats, like cloud gaming.”

From here: https://www.purexbox.com/news/2020/08/facebook_joins_xbox_in_criticising_apples_gaming_policies

Facebook says that it appealed the guideline under the new app review process announced at WWDC back in June, but it didn't receive a response from Apple.

A streaming app they got no revenue from?

Incredibly unlikely.. maybe you aren't being serious here though. There's no possible way MS would allow PSNow on XBox for instance.. and Sony will never allow xCloud on Playstation, and Nintendo will never allow it on Switch.

Microsoft is well aware of these facts, and has outright stated them in interviews.. yet for some reason they think Apple's walled garden should just let them in.

They are all playing the same game, each bending ever so slightly here and there to ease their walls for customers sake, while ever keeping an eye on their revenue. Google bends the most, allowing side loading on their mobile OS, Apple bends the least...with strict rules that they apply differently to different market segments. But the XBox ecosystem is far more like the Apple ecosystem than the Google one.

Hell Microsoft still manages to charge people money for watching Netflix on an Xbox...

is this really surprising?? One mega corporation is simply gonna let another mega corporation utilize its technology (iphone) to play xbox games on it without a cut?? c'mon

Two words: Netflix. Hulu.

How is Xcloud any different?

Also, Google has Stadia--a direct competitor--and they still support Xcloud. Apple is just being greedy bitches like Sony.

Because Netflix and Hulu are massive established platforms that Apple would get big media heat for blocking. Xcloud is not a massive thing so I guess they thought (probably correctly) they can get away with it.
