I spent a weekend playing the Avengers Beta. Any questions?

Square-Enix did a preview for the PS4 Avengers Beta last weekend. I spent three days playing it, hit the Hero level cap in the beta and completed every mission except for the three HARM challenges to unlock the Fortnite pickaxe (you need to have a HIGH power level and a good group for that - it'll wait for the public beta).

If anyone has any questions I can try to answer them. I also talked to the devs a bit yesterday and had a couple questions answered:

There's no cross-play (yet). They hinted it could possibly happen in the future. Spider-Man being exclusive doesn't seem to affect it.

Despite the mention of the Avengers being on the West Coast in Insomniac's Spider-Man, the two games are in separate universes. Spider-Man in this game will be separate from Insomniac's and by created by Crystal.

How's the levelling system?

So there's two levels you have:

The first is your Hero level, which is raised by experience from doing missions. Leveling up this gives you skill points to unlock skills. In the beta there's only one page of skills, but the final will have three.

The second is your Power level. This comes from your items. Items have an item level and they can be upgraded multiple times using resources dropped by enemies or from disassembling other items. Common items can only be upgraded a couple times, while the more rare ones can be upgraded several times.

So standard action RPG tropes. Got it. Looking forward to the character builds people come up with.
Otherwise... Loot!

Does it feel like the Destiny Beta where you got a sense of the entire game? DO you expect the entire game to feel the same?

The game seemed really janky in previews.

How's the performance like?

Did you think that the combat was more than up to par to warrant a long term play through?

The PS4 Pro has a framerate and 4K mode. So you can run it in 4K (probably dymanic) or a bit smoother. I think they're still optimizing that before launch though.

Combat gets more fun as you unlock more abilities. Powered up Hulk is great.

Yea pretty much. You get 4 campaign missions, 3 HARM challenges, and 5 War Zone missions. So it's a small slice but gives you a clue of that the whole game is like.

I love Destiny, the challenges such as the Raids, Dungeons and Nightfalls make the game extremely fun and satisfying. Based on the beta, did this have any type of difficult challenges where you have to work as a team to complete?

Yup. There's going to be a raid not long after launch according the the AmA. But the beta has a Level 20 villain War Zone that's kind of like a dungeon in a MMO. You need to be Power Level 20 to try it and you fight elite squads of enemies and then a GIANT mech boss at the end.

OK just one more question...

How big are the stages?

There is free roam? If so, how is to play with different characters? I mean, how is the mobility to travel in the stages, for example: One player goes with Ironman and fly to the objective, how does a player that selected Black Widow catches up with the other player?

The gameplay is musou like? I mean button smashing or there are a little more in to, like Dragons Dogma for example.

Varies from stage to stage, but there are hidden chests and stuff off the main path to find.

It's not open world. The missions are like Destiny where you select them from the hub and then matchmake. Each character has different traversal. Iron Man can fly, Kamala can swing with her arms like Spider-Man, Widow has a grapple that's similar, Hulk does his super jumps and can cling to walls.

It's like God of War. Done by the same designer. You have a regular attack (square), strong attack (triangle), jump (X), and dodge (circle). Special moves are mapped to the R1 and L1 and R1+L2 is the ultimate.

That's pretty cool.

Thanks... One final question: Did each character feels different from playing or they are just types? Like: Iron Man and Thor are the flying ones, did playing with Thor and Ironman felt different enough? Or they are just the same "class" with different moves?

You got me really interested in the Destiny and the God of War aspects.

Thor is only playable in the A Day prologue in the beta. The beta only has Iron Man, Hulk, Widow, and Kamala. But all of them feel very different.

Edit: My favorite thing with Thor in the prologue was throwing Mjolnir and having it hit something behind enemies and then retrieving it so it flies through multiple enemies. Really cool.

How are the animations and physics? Is the movement/combat floaty, heavy or balanced? How about the AI? Did you notice FPS drops? Any noticeable cliping?

Thank you!

I mainly played Hulk but his smashing was fun. As for the performance, I don't think it's completely optimized yet for the performance mode on the Pro. Sometimes the 4K one felt smoother. But there have been two patches to the beta client since I played, so they're obviously still tweaking things.

About 10 sites just uploaded beta impressions including Easy Allies, Gamingbolt and gamespot.

Yea and the video they're using is B-roll provided by Square. I have the same footage. You can't stream or capture custom footage until Friday.

Ok that’s fine, but I’m not making any judgements on what they showed, I’m saying that most are stating it’s average at best.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Is the story as "woke" as they make it out to be in the trailer?

How diverse are the abilities? Alot to choose from

What's uour impressions on the loot?

There's only one page of unlocks in the beta. No idea what are on the other two that are in the final.

Loot only affects stats. But it's like Destiny and there's a lot of it.

They have the thing like in Destiny where if your inventory is full the loot goes to a locker to retrieve it after the mission.

In the beta it seems like the story at first is A Day caused a shitload of Inhumans to pop up. Five years later AIM is experimenting on Inhumans to make an Inhuman cure like the Mutant cure in X3. No MODOK in the beta.

Do you think there are some "broken" characters? Like, somebody being clearly top tier?

No way to tell yet since there are only four of them in the beta. But I like playing Hulk the most. Others like Black Widow the most. Want to see how Thor plays in the final since he's only in the prologue in this and I liked what I played of him there.
