And yes, i do care if i'm going to get face closeups.
i feel like they took a perfectly normal and attractive actress than beat her with an ugly stick and put her in the game

A few of you are confusing technical impressiveness with aesthetic value, which are different things, being conflated. This question to me is about art direction and character design, which is how a face is decided to look in the game.

They are very important to my overall interest or perception in a game or movie. The Sonic movie is a great example. The only reason the character has enduring popularity is because the design is attractive, at least for eyes of children in the West... its certainly not because of the quality of any of the Sonic products. And the Sonic film would've performed completely differently had they not changed the face/character design to match his more recognizable form, even though everything else would've been equally as charmingly pedestrian.

It's funny in its own way how the Sonic The Hedgehog movie was the last movie theater experience for a lot of us in America.

some of these shots seem to be cherry picked to seem more unflattering than they are, but that's fine. Sometimes more detailed is worse, like my Dark Souls 2 character can easily be so much more attractive than my Dark Souls III character.

I like pretty/attractive characters in my games, this includes having a good looking face of course.

And....well, yes.

Are we comparing the model in the game?
Or cherry picking awkward shots?

Very important . Gameplay is important too , but it's hard to relate if the character is ugly .

This is how you make a pretty character face , and Japanese or Asian developers are the best at it .

sidenote : I can't wait for next gen in-game characters to looks 100% from the character creation
You realise the middle one is created from scan data, right? The country of birth for the character artist had nothing to do with how good that face turned out.

Faces I'm not so bothered about, great lip sync is more important

GoT suffers a little from this, great looking faces and inconsistent lip sync

Not a deal breaker, but distracting

I see you are a man of culture as well... now how the hell did they turn someone that looks like her into this?

(Well...maybe ex-man of culture?) :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

I know...it's so strange! It's like they took her jaw and elongated it by an inch and then made it slightly crooked for some inexplicable reason. 🤔

these are just two different types of faces. the one on the right is prettier and more "ideal", but the one on the left could just as well be somebody's real human face... in fact it's more believable because it's more flawed!

most of the examples in your OP seem to revolve around attractiveness, not better graphics

my take is this...
1.) faces are probably really hard to do well, so i i give a pass for that (its one of the last things id judge a video games graphical content on)
2.) i dont think ive ever noticed a face that looked so graphically amazing that it gave me pause or made me say wow, so until i see that, im not gong to hold other games to any kind of standard (lets be real, no video games faces really look convincing right now)
3.) facial animations is where its at. if you can convince me that that human face is moving exactly like a human face should, expressions and all, ill be more imprssed by that than i would by a more attractive video game face

Very important. Mass Effect Andromeda was just a mess, but I am glad that we are at a point where faces look amazing in gaming in general.

Numerous times in TLOU2 you see tiny reactions on the faces (like squinting when you zoom the camera) which are amazing.

And Lara in the new Tomb Raider reboot games has an incredibly beautiful face.

Control girl something went wrong. I think her real life model looks way better than ingame.

Important to me. If the character is ugly it really takes me out of the experience. Like Abby in tlou2, I don't care that she's built like a man but did they have to make her so freaking repulsive
I don't understand this at all.

A LOT. In my case it's almost like an unhealthy fetish. Well desgned characters with detailed and expressive faces improve the experience so much for me. It goes back to many many years ago when I used to play FIFA career mode only with players that had realistic faces ignoring completely their ratings. If the player had a generic face, he was sold.

I'm fine with diversity and playing ugly character (by DA choice).
And games doing it are a minority by far so it's easily avoidable if my feelings is not shared.

yeah it sounds more like OP is saying "this video game person is hotter than this video game person"

which is completely subjective, so im interpreting it as more of a graphics PLUS attractiveness argument

if its purely attractiveness then this topic is honestly a waste of time :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Is it enough to tolerate it even if the face is unpleasant, ugly or does not agree with you.
I guess most of you would go for the band-aid fix and put a helmet or paper bag over it, examples Dark Souls and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion having pretty bad character creation, best hide it with a helmet.

But some times the video game industry really has gone dirty with it and release pretty shitty defaults. You all know what I'm talking about.

Mass Effect Andromeda

CoYNSkB.jpg

Tomb Raider Definitive Edition, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the Tomb Raider

EUOwedU.jpg

compared to Tomb Raider (2013), this face is clearly superior in this version.

wpQB0pz.png

Marvel's Avengers clearly listened to the feedback. Going from this:

l4RDJCa.png

to this:

vcHvlaT.png

the jowls have shrunk giving her face a more feminine feel, and I'm glad they listened to feedback.

Something similar happened with Marvel vs Capcom Infinite.

Hell, there was a lot of backlash with Sonic the Hedgehog movie.

How important is character video game faces to you?
Is it enough to not warrant a purchase because the character is ugly?

Hell, I know I didn't purchase Control and The Last of Us Part 2 games because these characters were ugly as fuck.

If you seriously didn't purchase certain games because you found their character models to be ugly, then you are woefully superficial. I wonder how you treat people whom you find unattractive in real life. Also, I wonder how good looking you are.

Asses are way more important. Faces? Eh, can't see them most if the time. In the end, we can always use a classic paper bag trick.

yeah levyjl1988 levyjl1988 , let's see that mug!
Very poor arguments.
1. Choosing to not play a game because I hate looking at the character is a valid reason as choosing a game for game length, graphic style, gameplay, and so on.
I could easily debunk this theory telling you that you should enjoy porn games with characters that you find ugly, or else you are superficial.
2. Choosing to not spend 60$ because I don't like something is a legit reason and has nothing to do with irl behavior towards irl people, this is just stupid, games are fantasy, not reality.
Or are you telling me that you are a a mass murderer in real life because you enjoy playing GTA?
3. Game characters don't exist, they are fictional and not real persons, they can't take offence if I say they look like shit.
Also being ugly doesn't mean that ugly people are forbidden to look at beautiful faces.
Seriously, think about what you are saying before posting.

Course I do. Scan data or not, it still up to the developer or animation artist to make them looks good.

Realistic faces, proportionally speaking, are more important to me than graphic realism. Morrowind faces look bad, but with the right addon they magically look great - but they're still in vanilla Morrowind. Deus Ex HR stands up today despite being from a time before the widespread contemporary uber-pore face textures~ Crysis, wooo

Attractive faces sell games.
Ugly faces (as in poorly modeled faces) create memes and disappointment.
go outside and look at some real faces ya big nerd :messenger_tears_of_joy:

jk, yeah i think its pretty common knowledge that sex/attractiveness sells. youre not making some great new point here

EDIT:also, show us that mug bro, dont be shy

I feel like Abby gets a lot of undue hate. First, who cares if she's built like a tank or "freaking repulsive?" I guess a lot of people did. Anyway...

Spoiler Defense!
Once you have that first flashback with Abby, everything about her is re-contextualized. Abby is built like a tank because Abby is broken. She has followed a singular focus for a very long time and that focus has made her the monster she needs to be in order to both survive in the world and get her revenge. Her physique is a reflection of what drives her. Her arch is to regain what she has lost. She's a firefly who stopped looking for the light. At the end of the game, her physique from earlier is also used to illustrate the degree to which she was tortured. Abby's appearance is informed by the plot. It is great. Fight me.

I think that's exactly the point. Ellie is legit hit with actual sticks. Her looks are informed by the story. She has the drab appearance of someone who doesn't really care about hygiene (she apparently smells too) and goes out and does dangerous work.

On another note, why is this thread about faces almost exclusively using women as examples? It's like this old media trope where women aren't allowed to be ugly because it turns away an audience but no one seems to care if men have more "distinct" features. I feel like if this thread was really about just faces, there'd be a lot more of this guy. He's ugly, yes, but the model also is . . . janky.

Blame the West launch version. The Japanese version has a young male as the lead, not the father.

I guess I'm obsessed with perfect faces, the symmetry, the correct proportions, the golden ratio.

giphy.gif
Computer mapping technology was then used to create a picture of the most perfect female face with Amber Heard's nose and chin, Kim Kardashian's eyebrows and forehead, Scarlett Johansson's eyes, Rihanna's face shape, and Emily Ratajkowski's lips. According to the study, this face is perfect:

Haha that face at the end of the article, mashing together all the celebs face parts, looks freaking Frankenstein of uncanny valley.
