It really feels like PS5 and XSX should wait til next year to launch

I've been thinking this for a while, and I didn't want to commit to this line of thought until we saw Microsoft's showing today, but after what they showed, I feel confident in saying both manufacturers should have just waited til 2021 to launch new hardware. The fact that both of their presentations for next gen games were lackluster is only part of the reason. Neither company seems like they have the software to back up the launch of a new console. Both presentations showed up that Sony and Microsoft is not very confident in the games this close to launch to really show up much gameplay at all. Neither company is confident enough to commit to any release dates either, or prices this late into the year already. For games, and for hardware. It's like they're all scrambling to get them out the door by the end of the year, regardless if they got something ship-able. Maybe the hardware is ready, but covid may have put a damper on software, and a lot of games are just not ready it seems like. Not to mention the fact that people might have a hard time even affording new consoles this year anyway because of covid, and how much it fucked the economy this year.

Another aspect is I think Sony really shouldn't be in such a rush to get new hardware out especially when they've shown us this year that the PS4 is still very capable on the graphical front with games like The Last of Us 2, and Ghost of Tsushima. Every thing looks to be cross gen at launch, and so the incentive for audiences to buy new hardware isn't there either. Software sells hardware, and they need to launch with more besides slightly better versions of existing games to get people to buy them.

PS5 might be in a better position than XSX when it comes to giving people a reason to buy a console, because they might have more generational exclusives but after seeing what the PS4 can still do, I don't see what the rush is. Hold off until you got more to offer. Unless Ratchet & Clank is a launch game, I didn't see anything in their showcase that convinced me to get a PS5 even if it is exclusive to that generation.

Oh no sir.

I am done with this generation and its shitty jaguars.

I'm done with waiting minutes to load a game and then another minute to load a level. I'm done with pop-in and jarring LOD transitions, sub 30fps games, flat muddy textures, LOUD FUCKING SYSTEM FANS (i'm looking at you PS4 Pro) and stink dualshock 4 battery life.

I'm ready for a step up in quality hardware and gaming experiences.

Fuck Miles Morales. #notmyspiderman

It don't really matter when they launch at this point. They console are already done. IF you don't get a PS5 first year no big deal. They'll try to sell to you the years after when the price and is maybe lower and value is better. Sitting on a bunch of stock or twiddling their thumbs when they could be getting feedback and encouraging people to spend and own controllers, consoles and subscriptions. There will be casuals and semi-casuals who will buy a new console and feel obligated to buy any old random game just because they got a new console and that revenue is great to have to be reinvested into doing other things and sot hat their balance sheet looks better and better for investors.

If they have inventory available, get to it. Game libraries always lag behind, and we’ll largely be sticking to existing franchises for the next year or two anyway. It’s just the way things are now.

I agree. People forget Burbank and Hollywood is where most of the VO and Mocap happens and union actors still aren’t back to work in full swing. Anything coming out this year has been in development on a base of development that kicked off pre COVID and it’s being finished remotely. There’s probably going to be a dip in quality and a huge software drought post launch. That’s excluding hardware supply chain issues and economic uncertainty: its just a shitty year for new entertainment.

My PS5 will basically be replacing my PS4 Pro in the living room and playing my backlog in higher res/higher frame rate, so I'll take it as soon as it's out. Playing a few new PS5 games this year will just make it better.

lol, yes, that is not because they launching too much soon, its because they can't spend several million $ for a AAA game exclusive to new consoles what people haven't bought yet. If they release on 2021, Spiderman and probably Demon Souls remake would be cross gen games

Still getting a PS5 day one just for the quick loading. Things that I play like Fortnite and Destiny take forever and a day to load right now.

I can probably get my ass handed to me an extra 5 times a day with the quick loads next gen!

Every start of a gen fucking sucks for games. And every gen idiots forget that
I would agree with last gen, but next gen has backwards compatibility.
That way I can play my current games in its best form. As soon as ps5 launches, I won't need my PS4, I couldn't say that with the ps3.

I've seen this sentiment already and, frankly, the comparison is ridiculous.

Sony has showcased nine first party titles, all next-gen exclusive, coming within the first year of the system launch.
They look great, they run well, and they look ready.

MS has refused to make any next-gen exclusive. Their flagship failed to load textures live on stage.
Most of their output is CGI/in-engine rubbish, some (like Everwild and Fable) barely in pre-production.

If a next-gen console had to be delayed, then it obviously would be MS's, not Sony.
Trying to paint the two with the same brush is just a way for some to save face, after their company very disappointing showing.

Horizon 2 is surprisingly confirmed for 2021!
The rest seemed pretty far along, DeS is even rumoured at launch. Not going to expect anything from GT, but even that seemed ready.

Also holy shit, missed the new Jak and Daxter!

Nah. With Sony's current business model. They need the new machine out by the end of this year. Based on Xbox showing last night, Sony seems to be further ahead both in terms of focus and games for the next gen. They also have a large potential of PS4 smash hits such as TLOU2, Ghost Of Tsushima to carry over to PS5 with upgraded visuals/sound and faster loading times.
MS seem to have made a big bet (we haven't heard Sony plans yet) on the service convergence. Hoping to become Netflix for video games. An affordable service, loaded (saturated) with a wide variety of low to mid tear content with some strong AAA exclusive content sprinkled in-between. I speculate that their initial plan was to go more aggressive with the Stadia like model, but Stadia's initial (current) failure caused them to get stuck in-between.

Don't agree we've had these consoles now since 2013 and my pro sounds like a hurricane now so good riddance , I think Sony's ready the consoles spec isn't gonna change and I think they have software late enough in Development to release with some great launch games , Sony and ms arnt even on the same planet when it comes to being ready for next gen in my eyes .

Late 2021/early 2022, in my opinion, but mainly because I wanted the current consoles to have more life. The end of this gen is poor send-off compared to the likes of PS2 and PS3.

PS5 was delayed a year ago. It's ready now. The problem is on MS first party titles.

I was always saying the latter, the better especially with Pro and XOX to fill the gap. A late 2021 would not have bother me at all.

Don't loop Sony in with this. Spiderman at launch is big. They'll have Kena and a huge backlog of PS4 games enhanced for PS5 too. Some people still haven't played TLOU2 or GoT and now they can in 4K 60 frames.

PS5 has a nice budget friendly Spiderman game to launch with, and we've seen enough of Horizon 2, GT and Ratchet and Clank to know they'll have some big next gen bangers coming in short order.

Meanwhile MS would be absolutely fucked if they gave the PS5 a headstart in the market.

They can't afford to just wait until 2022 when they'll actually be ready for next gen, so gamepass and contradicting messaging on not needing an XSX to sell the XSX it is.

Couldn't agree more, the consoles will be there within a few months, but the games won't arrive until a year or two later, so what's the point? My hype for next gen in the past half a year wen't from getting both consoles on day 1 to wondering how long my PC will still serve me...

its not a fully triple A big spiderman game like the previous spiderman was. Its going to be more of a smaller spinoff while they work on their main title

This is honestly true. But the general public won't see it from that perspective. They see it as: Spiderman. The next Spiderman. The last Spiderman that came out sold well over 10 million.

Go Go Neo Rangers!
Launches are always rough but this one in particular feels more so than ever.

Halo looks fine at best but will offer a long term game play loop.

Spiderman will likely be very good but is a shorter experience.

Those being the major games for each machine is crazy. Ones a cross gen game and looks like it and the other is an expansion.

If Horizon and R&C are 2021 games (I have my doubts about Horizon hitting it's date) it sounds like 2021 is a better date for ps5.

Microsoft will likely pad their launch line up with flight sim and Gears Tactics, and with those being on GP it'll help a bit soften the blow but still not exactly a killer line up as both of those games are already out. (Will be in the case of Flight Sim)

Everwild looks like it's a 2021 title. Launching with that and Halo already sounds better but since we have no Everwild game play it's hard to say.

Either way this Holiday season as it stands now will feature some of the smallest first party launch games I've ever seen next to maybe N64?
