I really miss this style of art and the styles from the 70s that influenced it.

Some of the 2nd Edition artwork is still my favourite in the series, such as:

I'm still a bit mad at GW that we never actually got imperial guard units that really looked like that image. Why Games Workshop? WHY???

Not as models we don't. Even if you go with Forgeworld, there's nothing that looks like that design.
All I mentioned have or had models. Going from top to bottom you got Kasrkin (I got a squad in my army), Stormstroopers (no longer made unfortunately), Steel Legion (my own army, still sold a bit) and Solar Auxilia (sold on Forge World).

Yes, and none of those look like that design beyond sharing broadly similar generic armour, greatcoats and/or gasmasks with helmets.

You may as well have posted Cadians, Valhallans and Tempestus Scions for all the resemblance they have.

Yeah, that is the point. They look generally the same. Which is what Makariel was saying. He wasn't saying he wants the exact same, just that "really look like" them. All the mentioned ones clearly fall in that category, especially the Kasrkins and Stormtroopers. Btw. these are kasrkins, not the ones you posted.

And the Solar Auxilia are amazing models too

Eh, I'm just not seeing anything beyond the most superficial similarities myself.

You could stick pictures of the colonial marines from Aliens or mobile infantry from Starship Troopers in that mix too and they'd bear just as many things in common.

Well, I honestly don't see many differences between them. Colonial marines look completely different, they are just dudes with guns, and Starship Troopers are just too big, they look like dreadnoughts more than infantry.

The ones Makariel posted look almost identical to Steel Legion with bigger backpacks.

Games Workshop needs to establish their proper scale in cinematics/art and really stick with it. That last CG trailer for Indominitus was great, but that sister of battle is far too tall relative to that Primaris Astartes (themselves slightly taller than the originals).

To put it into context, every Primaris is about the size of Thanos from Infinity War, who is roughly 8'3-ish.

Adeptas Custodes are taller than that at 9ft.

So I took the plunge. Clearing my study up, making some space. Ordered some paints, bought some tools...got a couple of squads of marines arriving in a week. Gonna give this painting thing a go.

After mulling over the Indomitus boxset, and deciding I still don't care for Primaris, I made an Assualt Squad:

Y3XmhPY.jpg

Still need to do the Jump Packs, bases and minor detailing, as well as hazard stripes on the evicerator now I look at it, but I'm reasonably pleased with them.

I think the lore behind Primaris is needless and stupid. They've could've updated the model range to be more proportioned and brought back Guilleman without some huge in-universe explanation for why the Space Marines are slightly bigger with changed stats. (I also agree w/ the stat change, Space Marines should always have been 2w and 2a).

They didn't even need to explain the size increase of the models. The miniatures have been getting bigger with each and every revision.

Compare the original Rogue Trader Womble Marines to the last normal marines (such as in the Space Marine Heroes packs). There's a bigger difference there than between the current Space Marines and the Primaris Marines.

They can't even claim scale reasons anymore, since the new Sisters of Battle are massively oversized compared to Primaris. If they're meant to all be 'true scale', then every single Sister is apparently taller than a regular Space Marine.

The reason it was done was for money. Space Marines are their biggest seller, and in just a few years every single Space Marine player has had to rebuild their army to stay competitive.

Well, saying that, I've started doing the opposite. Picked up this awesome old Womble Techmarine cheap off ebay today. Anyone got any cool ideas for what to kit him out with?

Awesome! They usually cost a pretty penny. I was thinking of getting myself some Inquisitorial Stormies or a few more Kasrkin but they are stupidly expensive.

On the topic of size though, I have the 2nd edition Deathwing terminator and people are always fascinated how tiny it is, it is almost the exact same size as a Cadian shocktrooper :D

Not yet, but I do fondly remember playing Venator, a Dark Angel tactical marine in the Deathwatch tabletop RPG, for several months.

Nice! Also thematically if you decide you want to go with a successor chapter, since the Dark Angels still secretly operate as a Legion, you can get away with still using the named characters or mixing and matching different chapter's units if you don't want to just paint green all the time.

Also with all the hints GW keep giving, I'd be willing to put money on the Lion showing up soon, along with Luthor and the Fallen. The DA's are probably the marines with the most interesting lore and story potential in the fluff right now.

Scale kreep man, it's crazy.

Having been away for a couple of decades I'm content just spending my time looking for old model bargains, including stuff released in the time I was away that's now superceded or out of production.

Like this awesome old Forgeworld Dreadnought I made yesterday!

I just looked at it on my big PC screen and the cast quality is terrible, even for Forge World, hot damn. Are you personally satisfied with it or does it bother you too? I understand that once you clean it up and paint it it won't look so bad, but right now it is a big oof. The model itself is great though, only the cast bothers me. I personally have had generally bad experience with Forge World. My Warhound Titan came with missing parts and hideously bent carapace that took me a whole day to straighten out. My chimera autocannon and linked heavy bolter turrets had a crazy amount of bubbles which I had to fill with green stuff and my Ryza pattern vanquisher turrets had horribly bent heavy stubbers and broken hatches which required a ton of green stuff to crate a tight seal. My friend once ordered a bunch of Chaos Space Marine pauldrons and what he got was basically a block of resin for him to carve them out himself :D

Well enough about that, now for some good news/bad news. The good news is that people in our club want to start playing a Crusade ASAP. The bad news is that I am supposed to be organizing it. I mean, it ain't "bad news" really but I get to organize almost everything and it can be a lot of work, but on the other hand I take it as their appreciation of my work since they always come to me with this kind of stuff. Campaigns, tournaments, events, etc.

It's a recast of early, out of production Forgeworld stuff, so double the amount of dodgy detailing!

Not that actual Forgeworld stuff is any better mind, I've had to send some of their even recent releases back because of their poor quality.

Honestly it doesn't look that bad in person though.

Any even minor flaws are glaring in photo's, which is why I tend to have loads of work in progress pics and almost no finished ones. It's far easier to see mold errors and paint mistakes when zoomed in on a screen.

Right, does anyone have recommendations for painting tutorials? there are plenty out there, I'm just looking for a decent starting point. I'm completely new at this.

Hmm, well I was self taught. I really enjoyed making my own style and seeing myself progress. I looked at some of the painted minis in codexes and rulebooks and tried to imitate them. I think that is the most fun way of doing it, instead of listening to others how you should paint, just try it yourself and take pride in your accomplishments.

The best way to learn is by practicing, and finding a balance between what you can do that looks best and that isn't a chore to do.

Saying that, there's some great channels on YouTube that explain the basics and are good for giving ideas and seeing how to get various effects and do particular techniques.

Also I made up my Rogue Trader era Techmarine today.

Nice.

Although this is the third amateur animation in two years that's completely shown up GW's professionally commissioned stuff.

You'd really think given that this entire hobby centres around passion, creativity and artistic expression, they'd do more to reach out to fans for this kind of stuff.

After some very cheeky low offers and bidding on ebay I picked up these three magical mad lads up for 15 quid total to pad out my Librarius:

Lj2tGqv.jpg

Which I'm thinking I'm going to paint up differently depending on their rank, showing their effective 'evolution' from the standard marine to full on space wizard.

My Assault Marines are 99% done! Just some final touch ups and I'll be happy with them!

After that, on to the Techmarine! Which hopefully will be a lot quicker. God I need more free time....

Ordered some Citadel primer. The stuff I tried initially isn't working great. At least it strips off easily.

So I'm working on old marines atm, but I've got some Primaris around and they look easier to paint due to size. I'm practicing on some Devastators atm because they're a bitch with the giant 2 handed weapons. Don't want to touch the Primaris until I'm better at painting. They look awesome.

Will probably have something to show to the thread this weekend. I wish they sold the funky Dark Angel winged helms...I'd buy one for every single marine.

I always paint first and assemble later, I have been doing that for almost 15 years now.
On the sprue or how?

does the gluing together after fuck anything up? I was always Curious how people did this, because it would seem like you get much better results.

Spray them on the sprue, cut them out, paint them then assemble them. Never had any issues.

I finally got around to basing my 'Annihilator' Marines.

Kind of nice to compare them directly to my more recently made Assault Marines, which shows both an improvement in my painting and the more distinct aesthetic I've decided on for the Chapter.

I am currently running a Crusade for my 20 or so mates with house rules, maps, tactical aid, custom characters, titans, fluff stories based on battle reports and a ton of other stuff and I must say it is pretty intense and fun but incredibly time consuming. I hope things settle down a little bit because I don't think I can handle this amount of work when I also have my full-time job to take care of. The plan is to play for at least 3 months but most likely it will be around 4.

I am doing test paints on a number of marines until I find the method I like.

My initial black primer/hand paint everything/earthshade the entire business approach didn't thrill me.

Edit: first attempt ever. Don't mind the legs, I tried out some paints and bits on it afterwards. Successes? the bolter came out great. Failures? The general look, detailing, color choices on the aquila, the backpack had clogging, etc. I'm trying a few different approaches tonight.

don't forget to paint the barrel

Going for Dark Angels yeah?

With such a dark green, I'd recommend a grey undercoat instead of black, since you're not getting much light and shade contrast currently.

You also need a lighter green for highlighting.

You can either go with drybrushing, or glazing for that.

Drybrushing is quicker and easier, and gives a nice texured, slightly naturally look, but is inherently a bit messier.

Glazing is long winded but looks more neat and tidy. You're basically building up very thin, watered-down coats of mixed from light to dark paint, reducing the area you cover as it gets lighter to only the most raised area.

Both can then have a little edge highlighting, which you can either do subtley, or brazenly as GW themselves do.

For the Aquila, either go with bone or gold, which will require either a bit of wraithbone, thinned skeleton horde contrast, then a tiny bit of near deybrush highlighting with white, or using a dark gold or bronze, then careful drybrushing with the gold you're using, them a tiny bit of silver on the razed upper edges.

You should also look into using some Nuln Oil ink, which is great for panel lines and metallics to help everything pop.
