Phil Spencer: What you will see on July 23 is true creative freedom

MS basically handed Sony the generation with the hubris of the original Xbox One strategy. To see them now in such a great position, with stuff like physical BC embraced, leading the way with cross play, rebuilding relationships with Japanese developers, a stable of amazing developers who can move beyond Gears, Halo and Forza...

They should be second place more often :pie_winking: :messenger_grinning_squinting:

I think it shows fear.

We all know that if MS hits on all cylinders, leverages MS’ market power, and the board is ok with 5 years of losses, xbox will literally kill playstation this gen. The only tech companies that could compete with Microsoft are Apple, Google, Amazon, and maybe Samsung; and they don't give a fuck about premium gaming. Sony isn't the same league at all.

I am OK with that. Sony stopped making games I care about*, so I am hoping MS brings some good, creative stuff and hits on all cylinders and subsidizes gaming for the next five years, even if it makes gaming shitty in 7 years because of no competition.

My wish list includes AA/AAA nonkill games (eg animal crossing), rts, grand strategy, tell-tale-esque games, card battlers without microtransactions, and robust modding scene with no limits like with PC. Also $250 xss because $500USD ps5 is going to be $900 in canada.

*except for astrobot. Game is Nintendo great.

With a post like this, you think they are the ones showing fear? I think you pay them too much attention. When Microsoft was leading or at the very least had mind share, they gave us the confusing messaging with the announcement of the Xbox One. The example [of Microsoft] you are giving, is of Microsoft trying to compete against Sony, the company you are so easily writing off.

The fanboys really can't help themselves comparing Xbox show (that is yet to happen) to Sony's. It's like a disease.

Still no Xbox hype thread????....

It wont though. They will say its a poor showing no matter what games are shown, graphics or gameplay wise. While proclaiming Sony's show a 10/10 (lol).
I have already decided i wont be on the forum on the 23rd because i value my time on this forum, and wont lose it because of a bunch or fanboys that have spent too long in the trenches.

If you are satisfied with what Microsoft shows on the 23rd, does anything else matter?

I hold what I've said on all these threads: I think they're misjudging their approach, misjudging what their fans want and will brag about, and I think they're probably failing to learn from xBox One if they're going to persist in evaporating any centrality in their game delivery...

I can't believe they've made such a bold, statement console design with such bold tech specs and they're quickly saying it'll just be one of a clutch of systems, some really dated, which they're trying to bring together into one porridge of compromised games.

The cynic in me wants to say that his emphasis on lightweight, 'creative' non-AAA titles is because he doesn't want any xBox games at launch to feature epic load times

Hehe, what a burn . The hilarious part is that, exaggeration of mine aside, you are essentially accusing Spencer of console war trolling himself... Everything before the part in italics was a direct quote from Spencer himself.

Now that you got that little dig in, can you help Phil’s latest quote against Phil’s previous quote?

I cannot wait for the creative way where you explain how a designer only needs to ask him in case they have an idea for an XSX exclusive as he just champions creativity and freedom is not contradicting the policy he talked about just a day or so before where all XGS games would run on Xbox One too and could NOT be XSX exclusives.
I know I'm wasting my time, but why not? Let's use an example that we're all aware of.

• Not all Xbox exclusives are XGS games.
• The makers of Medium have creative freedom.
• Medium is an Xbox exclusive.
• Medium is next-gen only.
• Medium is also a Game Pass game.

It's really not that hard to make sense of any of this. Unless of course you're determined not to.

Has it being confirmed Medium is nextgen only and on Gamepass at the same time? Wouldn't that mean Xbox One game-pass users get less for their $ and may take issue?

We're definitely going to need a livestream hype thread for the show. I'm willing to do it if the somebody else hasn't already expressed interest or reserved it. I had a good time watching the PS5 show with my buds on this site, so it will be fun to do for Xbox too. Says July 23 at 9am PT for the show. I can still watch it live and get to work on time, so let's work this out.

I swear some poeple purposely look for problems that arent there, when it comes to Microsoft products.
I was lucky enough to not get RROD with the 2 Xbox 360's i owned. Best console apart from my PS4 Pro that i ever had.

I want MS to go back to those days of Gears Of War, Halo, Forza, Viva Pinata, Kameo, Project Gotham Racing 3.
F**cking glorious days those. Used to spend hours playing PGR3 online.

No matter what happens on Thursday, i still have hope MS can get back to the glory days of the 360. There is nothing make or break about Thursdays event.
They have plenty of time to wow us during this next gen cycle.

Phil my boy .. why you talk too much ?
You talked about games more than anyone in this world and yet you don’t have the games . You talked about creativity yet you never delivered what you promised since 2014 and here we go again , every time you bring the heat but where is the fire Phil ?

Let the games talk
Let the show talk
Let the silence talk

I’m so excited for the Show and I wish it’s good after all that talk
Is this a joke post? Has to be.
So far MS has announced the following games coming down for Series X through their first parties.
1. Halo Infinate
2. Flight SIM
3. Hellblade 2
4. Project Mara
5. Grounded
6. Wasteland 3
7. Psychonauts 2
8. Everwild
9. Gears Tactics

Then we expect to see another few at the July reveal such as
1. Forza 8
2. Fable 4
3. Perfect Dark
4. New compulsion game

And we know there is going to be games coming the next couple of years such as
1. Forza Horizon 5
2. The Outer Worlds 2

And whatever unannounced first party games are currently in development.

Then we have third party exclusives such as
1. The Medium
2. Scorn
3. Call of the sea
4. Bright Memory: Infinite

It is more than Sony has announced for PS5.
At this point if you are saying Phil has only just talked about the games and hasnt shown any, you are either just a troll, or are just plain ignorant.

Well those days took a long time to get to. And they were hard to sustain. MS didn't actually own any of the studios that they had partnerships with so eventually they would go away. The Matrick Era really screwed the brand in a lot of ways too. Kinect extended the generation, but basically getting rid of first party exclusives outside of Gears, Forza and Halo was just asinine, and it has taken years to build themselves back up, and it does seem they are finally understanding things. Consider, some of their biggest Microsoft published exclusives last gen like Alan Wake, Quantum Theory Mass Effect, Ninja Gaiden 2, Sunset Overdrive, RYSE, were made by studios that weren't owned by MS, which means that as those series and evelopers became popular, they could get bought up from under them (Insomniac and Bioware) go multiplat with future titles (Remedy and Team Ninja) or were never really going to do much more than that one game, (Crytek). It's why I have been thrilled since Spencer came back, they needed to have actual in house studios for more than just their main three titles. They also need to keep their studios happy as well, let's not forget the gutting of Rare and the exodus that led to the exodus from Lionhead, two other things that happened under Mattrick.

And for all the PS fans out there, you had best hope that Microsoft can come up with at least better competition this gen vs the PS5 than they did last gen. Sony on it's heels working its ass off to gain customers is best Sony. Sony on top of the world with little real competition tends to become one giant asshole of a company.

Games, it’s all about the games. Flight Sim hype is like a 8/10 for me, I’m really excited to see what MS has in store and I think they’ll come out swinging. I expect bombs to be dropped! Just a Perfect Dark teaser and I’ll lose my shit. Don’t give those devs TOO much creative freedom, I’m all for any characters and story, but in my opinion Microsoft needs to do a little overseeing and hand holding to make sure devs deliver solid games this launch. Hopefully they’ve provided support and pulled on the reigns if needed a little.

Replace exclusives with XGS games, it does not change the overall point much.
I understand what is going on, taking The Medium out of the equation does not change much.

i really wanna be hyped for this but the most generous way i can describe XGSs output over the years is confused. playground being the obvious exception. Wish theyd really go all out like they were in the early 360 days.

So, let's just ignore the example that completely refutes the argument you were making? As I said, wasting my time. :)

, I am not ignoring that example. I was wrong on including all exclusives, so I acknowledge that and revised it to XGS games.
“We are all about creative freedom unless it is one of the many studios we have bought for the next two years where you have to make your game run on Xbox One too” oh yeah... the argument I was making clearly lost all potency .

It seems like you are the one trying to ignore other people’s point and then projecting.

These Xbox execs just can't help themselve, can they? Always overhyping every one of their events. What is the endgame this time? Battletoads 8K?
Consider the number of threads in the past complaining about Sony being silent about PS5, I guess there are certain people who demand continuous hype.

They are two sides of extreme: complete silence for months (Sony) and saying something multiple times a week (Microsoft). Execs should be classy and not speak so frequently. Problem with Xbox execs is that they speak so much that they often contradict themselves and each other.

I mean, Sony simply want the hardware and games to do the talking for them, because they are just doing the same upgrades as this gen's launch. On the other hand, MS is trying to convince customers that their next gen is going to be different from the current one, but have very little to show yet.

Yes, Sony didn't show much either, but since they are repeating what they already have done before, there is no need for them to say very much. They will launch a PS5 the same way they launched a PS4, and that's the way they like it.

MS on the other hand is trying to reinvent the wheel. And that very well lead to the need to constantly say something every week.

Everything Phil is saying now he said multiple times before. These Xbox execs also often contradict themselves and each other, which shows how poorly organised and structured they are. They also talk a lot and show little, let's see if it's any different this time.
