After looking into buying Age of Empires 4 digitally recently I decided to take my 1999 versions of the game out and realised I really miss the huge boxes PC games came in (DS4 there for scale). They had fold out posters, nice charts, thick full colour manuals. Anybody else miss them and have some old unboxings/photos to share?

Absolutely. I don't have any of mine left, but I used to love going to Best Buy or Comp USA and reading all the boxes, especially the ones with covers that opened like a book.

Then you'd take it home and while it's installing you check out all the great stuff inside. Standard games back then were basically the "deluxe" physical versions you pay extra for today.

That's my childhood right there, though mine was in UK stores like WHSmith or Game. That book cover convinced me to buy Sim City 3000.

I don't miss plastic and cardboard pilling up in my basement, sorry.

this was in a time where megabytes were a precious storage. Today you have high resolution covers and interactive maps within the game itself.

I have a an old toy chest filled with cardboard box PC games, like the Half-Life 1 and Messiah, still nice to look at from time to time, but they will go eventually I'm sure. I do miss this stuff because I've realised that having a million digital things gives me no connection to said things. I just don't even bother with listening to music anymore like I used to, so I've bought some vinyl LPs and a record player to try and get back into it.

I get this, I've started to hate giant collections of stuff, its made me want to have a small number of physical things that I care for, rather than millions of digital stuff that I don't care about.

I still love this haha, I also found "Asshole", which is a Denis Leary song Halo music video. I'm trying to find a couple others but its proving hard. Not sure if anyone will have the same feelings as me but this surely takes me back to when I was 16 years old!

I could not care less for boxes, digital is way more practical... why would anyone ever need to get up from their couch or move an arm to reach physical media? Anything further than 3 clicks away is not worth my time . You only live once!!!!!
