So I had a bit of time with it before the wife demanded steak. First up, it’ll charm your pants off. There’s a delightful gentle humour to it, ripping the piss out of the Mario universe and gaming convention, and visually it’s an absolute treat. The battle system I’ve not been particularly tested by yet but I can imagine how it might get challenging. FWIW I liked the puzzle dungeons in BOTW so I’m more likely to like these.

Positive first impressions but I want to spend more time with it to give a more accurate opinion.

Played through the intro and the forest so far. It's certainly a pretty game. It still seems like it's just barely getting started, but I'm into it.

Games gorgeous, and I’m loving everything except the combat so far which seems a bit... odd.

The lack of leveling is a bit pants but seeing as you can upgrade your gear, and this level, it’s no big deal.

Good fun!

Are you able to upgrade your main gear or is it only buying breakable weapons? I think it was the NintendoLife review that mentioned most of the upgrades were essentially consumables that you would have to repurchase as they were expended

Played for a while before my Pro Controller ran low on batteries lol. Loved the overall mood and look of the game. Combat could be really good if/when it gets a bit more challenging. Amazing OST.

I've cut the first streamer so far. It's..alright so far. I'm fine with the regular battles, lining up enemies, but I find the path finding to bosses really annoying. It might be better if it drew an outline for you where the arrow will take you, because the time limit, mixed with trying to draw a line in my head is really frustrating.

The writing is fine, but again it still lacks the charm that the original Paper Marios had without having any unique characters. It's mostly Olivia talking, and she's a floating tutorial, which is annoying. Finding the Toads is kinda amusing I guess.

I feel like the best I can say about it is it's fine. Wish it was better though too, because the series has been.

My basic feeling so far after playing it a few hours with my kid is that I like it, but wish the battle system was better:
  • I suck at the battles. I wish they had no timer because maybe then I could get good at it and not be pissed off. You get pummeled if you don't get it right and you also deal less damage so it is overly punishing.
  • The boss fights are interesting. Not sure if I like them because there is a lot of trial and error, but when you figure it out it is satisfying. At least they put hearts on the board so the trial and error does not include die, reload, try again.
  • Exploration and overall world traversal is good.
  • Weapon breaking is utter bullshit.

So having played it a bit more - it's good. Visually it's absolutely gorgeous but we already know that. However, I think it belongs in the 2nd tier alongside mario+rabbids rather than with mario odyssey or mario kart if you're looking at mario as a whole. It's solid enough, decent fun, but doesn't have quite as much wow factor as the top tier Nintendo stuff.

Are you guarding? It turns 12 damage into like 3.

Can someone tell me if you can find everything on your visit to each area, or if you acquire more power-ups throughout the game that allow you grab new stuff? Just wondering so then I know whether it's worthwhile to immediately 100% areas or not.

I'm pretty sure you have to backtrack to some areas to 100%, because one of the early areas I was stumped in...trying to start a campfire, I decided to look it up, and it looks like you can't start the fire til you get something later in the game. That's the only example I looked up, but it confirmed that you can't 100% on the first time through everywhere.

Is it good?

Might get it this week..
It is good. It's not something that will blow you away, but there's lots of elements about it that are very well made.

It's not laugh out loud funny so far, but it's consistently amusing. Even if a toad you save is just a random NPC, they tend to have a little quip here and there that is slightly amusing.

The game is gorgeous. It has set camera angles, so everything looks perfectly framed all the time in interesting ways, and the art style is consistently gorgeous.

There are so many secrets packed into the levels that it's shocking. Secrets amount to basically hitting something with your hammer, but when I got to level 3 or 4 I spent probably 30-45 minutes on literally just one area hitting every single thing I could find and it said I only even got 40% of the toads. I don't even understand how there are that many secrets. They aren't super in depth, but if you like casual exploration and collectathon stuff, it's fun.

The battles are interesting, and different. Sometimes I can't figure out the puzzle, but most of the time I have been. You can get accessories to extend the timer a bit too, which helps. The battle theme is starting to annoy me; same song always. But most of the time, battles are short which is good. Your HP is not that high either, so if you don't block consistently and start using items and degradable weapons, you'll start getting pummeled quickly.

I haven't reached any of the large exploration parts from the trailer yet, but I think it opens up into a world map or something. So far, I'm enjoying it. Nice, easy going game.

Am I the only one who gets unreasonable annoyed that Mario’s jump is all wrong?

Pretty much sums it up, more eloquently than I managed earlier.

I've been reading that the OST is really well done. I'm excited

Might try to get another 100 moons in Super Mario Odyssey, try to beat Resident Evil: Zero once and for all, and then I'll be okay with finally pulling the trigger. So many amazing games to play on the Nintendo Switch, and now Donkey Kong Country is available on Nintendo Switch's Online for SNES. The catalog thickens...

Said fuck it and grabbed a copy. I haven’t used my Switch in months.

I know it isn’t TTYD, but it looks a hell of a lot better than Color Splash.

I have barely started it but It really is a gorgeous game the little bit I have played. The bits of music people have posted around are fantastic too.

Yeah, so, uh, can I just brute force my way through this combat? I’m a fucking retard with the rotating puzzle shit even though I do like it.

I'm in the second world and there are some puzzles I don't even try. You can totally brute force it thus far, I suspect that won't be the case in the later levels. But so far the difficulty in this game is incredibly well balanced, it's on the easier side but it avoids the pitfall of being really frustrating.

Ok great because I’m having a really good time with it. So far it’s the most fun I’ve had with a P Mario since TTYD.

Same here. The exploration is phenomenal and the combat is satisfying when you solve a tough puzzle. It has exceeded and I'm not even into the good stuff as Paper Mario games are traditionally better after the initial chapters.

i downloaded this because of my love for the franchise but i haven’t played yet. 3 questions:

1. is the lack of exp distracting or does the coin mechanic basically just feel like a 1x1 stand in for exp?
2. is the battle system dogshit?
3. are the partners cool?

Go Go Neo Rangers!
I'm sure this has been said the music in this game is top fucking notch. Musuem them is instant classic.

Also conspiracy theory time. In the toads house with the battle training, I see Super Smash hints.

Paper Mario to super smash

It's growing on me, though I'll be honest, when I'm a bit tired those damn battle puzzles are a pain in the balls. Nikana Nikana is right that the music is bloody good.

I definitely have moments where as soon as the enemies jump around my brain goes full stupid.
