For fucks sake.

Taking existing multiplatform developers and making them platform exclusive is not good news.

Sure, at least with Microsoft they release on PC too, but that still leaves the vast majority of console gamers getting buggered.

Plus we've yet to see any evidence that Microsoft suddenly know how to run studios competently and foster an environment that produces good games. They've got the talent, but it'll be a good 5 years before we know if they've worked out how to leverage it properly, or if it will be the same mediocre business as usual.

Exclusives bad.
Buyouts good.

Noticing a pattern here.

Oh, it's not platform exclusives. It's ecosystem exclusives. LOL

Itll be OK.

Perhaps Microsoft will get a fighting game like Mortal Kombat or a superhero game like Batman and put it into GamePass and not make it exclusive to just XBox. Maybe they'd do that.

....or they can do what their competition does and have walled off games exclusive to one device/console. Kinda like a Spiderman super hero game and a paid exclusive fighter like Street Fighter.

It's almost like a perfect balance.

If you cant tell this is a direct result of what the competition hath wrought than I dont know what else to tell ya. Now I ain't saying its right....but if im spending $4B on WB games, probably gonna make some stuff exclusive to my platform (not my console....my platform).

It is their right to buy. It is the right of the studio to sell.
However, studios are not games. And EA proved that buying studios only matter if you actually cultivate them properly.

I am not opposed to any of this on principle. However one has to wonder if this is just MS's backup plan to go third party.

I do not see it being particularly wrong for them to buy those studios (bit worried about their GaaS multiplayer/live services company focus though) although yeah this is a bit market distorting and not the competition people think is healthy and all (funnelling in money from the PC/services monopoly into consoles... well what is the Return on Investment strategy?! That is the bit I am curious about).

The point that I find very duplicitous and sleazy is giving this interviews and then telling gamers that making next generation consoles exclusive games is anti consumer and the wrong way to go about it and that you want games to be on all devices. This is double speak/PR bullshit a lot of warriors are going for and defending it. “Thanks MS for caring about all gamers and buying studios that will not make more games for Nintendo and Sony consoles anymore but will still support Xbox One...” ... I do not get this line of thinking.

Gamepass is still exclusive to their own ecosystem... call me when they publish titles on macOS, Linux, Switch, and PS4/5... ;).

Happy to hear that we're on the way of having 5 huge companies in the world that own everything. Go MS!!!

The hilarious moment is going to be when some Chinese colossus like Tencent or something bigger goes on a spree and the people cheering this in one thread and cheering the same company decrying exclusives (seen it already in this thread, my exclusives are pro consumer, PS exclusives are anti consumer... hello Jon Neu Jon Neu it seems like this attracted you for some reason... but sure going on a buying spree and making studios exclusive to your platform and at the same time saying exclusives are bad is right up to some people’s alley I guess ;)) will start getting a lot less cheerful ;).

He can be pro consumer and not be an idiot at the same time. Or do you want him to just shut it all down so PS and Nintendo gamers don't feel bad? Get a grip folks. Have a little business acumen.

Interestingly, formally multiplatform developers make up the crown jewels of Playstation Studios. Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Guerrilla Games, Insomniac, were all multiplatform developers before Sony bought them.

Must... consume... everything!

Rare photo of Microsoft being fed more studios:

I get the business point man, he is just not as pro consumer as you think but making people think they are the ones being pro consumers while doing the same things he decries as being anti consumers got him some good press that he hopes turn into good sales.

I am not saying double speak never works and does not make you money, just that it is snake oily salesman double speak behaviour and some people lapping it up does not really make that point invalid.

Saying exclusives are bad and joyfully announcing that they plan to keep buying studios and making the exclusives is disingenuous PR doublespeak hinging on the difference between a MS platform (Windows + Xbox) vs console generation difference which is in all intents and purposes a disingenuous loosely related comparison.

Lol, most of them were making more and more titles 99% of the time on PS (this has been the modus operandi for Sony acquisitions, companies that work very very well as second party already) but good try.

Please, let me know when Song was giving interviews decrying exclusives as a practice and taking about not caring on what device you game on at the same time as announcing more studio purchases that would become exclusive to their platform alone.

As long as ms is able to make awesome games with them, i have no issue.

I will buy whatever hardware is needed to play games i am interested in.

I just hope ms actually delivers on games and it doesnt become a Rare like situation.

If MS ownership allows for great games instead of studios struggling/going bankrupt, its much preferable.

Cue up the "Xbox is doomed and will be leaving the console biz" concern trolls. SSDD. 🤦‍♂️😅
Well their constant desire to make GAAS games that compete with existing third party offerings, really doesn't make sense if they want to stay as a console platform. Third Party studios are a source of money to Xbox, they have no financial reason to compete with them. Sony decided to make 1st party games because it is a niche that is under-served and it rounds out their library. But MS's gameplan just seem to work best outside a walled garden.
