Nintendo On Possible Next-Gen Console: We Wish to Extend The Switch Life Cycle As Much As Possible

I wonder about Nintendo and Nvidia. The Tegra chip powering the Switch was pretty much Nvidia’s last shot at mobile chips. Everything they have now, and in the announced future, is geared towards different markets. I’m sure Nvidia could make a great mobile chip again, but I don’t think they want to divert the resources required. It really makes me wonder about backwards compatibility, and future hardware for a Switch 2.

I don't think nVidia is ruled out, but the Tegra is ARM. That means any other ARM implementation like Exynos or Snapdragon should allow backwards compatibility.

I wonder about the GPU side though. How hard is it going to be for an AMD chip to provide backwards compatibility to a Nvidia GPU?

How they’ve always managed to be two generations behind in hardware and still be competitive is a puzzle to me.

The next Switch should support VR in some way. The Quest already shows that a good experience can be had in mobile hardware. Just slide the tablet in some "gear VR" adapter or offer a slimmer, wireless, lightweight HMD, just with screen and sensors. The controlers can be 3D tracked joycons. Do that and I will certainly buy it.

this dude got into VR but never really left the 80s :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I would like to see better character design and art direction. Xenoblade has a horrible modern anime look that is both creepy and unappealing. They need to go back to 90's style anime.

I also want a much more coherent and better paced story. I would prefer if they went away from Japanese/Shinto mythology and went back to Western/Christianity inspirations and themes. Xenoblade series has terrible story while Xenogears, story inspired by Western entertainment and culture, is one of the greatest story in videogame history.

Well good to know I’ll be having a portable Metroid Prime and Pikmin (I swear I’ll punch Nintendo if they don’t) Ahem, this generation.

Well this fucks the “hardcore” audience or whatever they’d call the people that want 3rd party AAA support on a Nintendo console. They’ll probably continue the anemic drip feed of 1st party games too, wherein if you don’t enjoy the flavour of the quarter (that ONE FUCKING GAME THEY RELEASE THAT QUARTER) then your switch will continue to gather dust.
Yea, yea maybe it’s more like 2 games a quarter, but that’s lazy and borders on abusive to the end consumer.

You can tell how creatively bankrupt/lazy they are by the underuse of key IPs and who knows when they’ll use any is them next.

Why? I asked this to another dude that used this "abusive to the consumer" angle and he didn't reply, so maybe you can enlighten me. If a video game console isn't an ongoing service, how the fuck is that abusive to the consumer? Joycon drifting is abusive. Lack of games, real or perceived, will never ever be abusive.

I bought the fucking thing to play games on, no other console this gen is so starved of AAA content than the Switch, most of the eshop is filled with pure shit that even Steam would reject.

Year one or two they played a picture showing all the devs that supported them, some of the bigger devs only delivered shitware games like J ust Dance.

They’ve also made many promises to attract more 3rd party devs, this is all lies, thus the abuse.

I paid them money for the premise is playing good games on the machine, they promised stuff like Metroid Prime 4 years ago, with no substitute to make up for their feet dragging.

Nintendo are to blame for the lack of content, release of extremely niche games per quarter, they could fix this by releasing more games that appeal to every gamer, but people still but this fucking console so Nintendo doesn’t have to do shit.

Nintendo has one of the most frevrent toxic fan bases that will apologize for the shittiest things Nintendo does, like forcing a fee to play P2P in games like Splatoon 2 or limiting the player experience to one island per console in Animal Crossing, an unprecedented abuse of players.

They’re one of the most abusive companies in the industry.

You're not entitled to shit, you bought the hardware because you wanted to. Be smarter with your money next time if there's truly nothing you want to play. When Paper Mario launches next week, Nintendo will have released these exclusives over the last year:

Super Mario Maker 2
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Astral Chain
Link's Awakening
Ring Fit Adventure
Luigi's Mansion 3
Pokeymans
Tokyo Mirage
Pokeymans Mystery Dungeon Feels
Clubhouse Games
Xenoblade Chronicles
Paper Mario

I'm not trying to list wars here, so please do not feel the need to dissect that list. Point is, that's a game every month. If you're not interested in any of those games or if you think that's not enough to satisfy whatever standards you have for your consoles, then it's entirely on you for buying it in the first place.

Super Mario Maker 2- stone soup Mario edition, filled mostly with awful levels that are simply there to make Youtubers make clickbait videos, but aren’t really fun to play
Fire Emblem: Three Houses- nice game
Astral Chain - oddball but ok
Link's Awakening- Gameboy port, yea yea, some changes but FFS could have included a new quest for the price(again Nintendo apologists defends this frevrently)
Ring Fit Adventure - over priced, get ~$50 gear, go on YouTube, save the change, get a better workout.
Luigi's Mansion 3- niche, too short, breaks itself halfway
Pokeymans -niche, reduced features from previous games, ancient models and sound samples, pinnacle of abuse to the sucker consumer
Tokyo Mirage- old Wii u Ports don’t count
Pokeymans Mystery Dungeon Feels - extremely niche
Clubhouse Games - mini game collection way to overpriced, mostly free on a Windows 95 pc
Xenoblade Chronicles- another old port
Paper Mario - I fucking love this series, they fucked up the combat again and removed XP from a series played for it’s RPG roots

You won’t get my opposition, there is a good reason to be pissed at what they’ve done and failed to do with the switch.

Just add to this pile of shit that they still don’t have Netflix nor even Youtube on a console in 2020 where the WiiU had both, both apps would make the machine more useful.

edit: ducking Apple quick swipe autoincorrect.

Just to clarify here what I'm saying, it's perfectly understandable to be dissatisfied with the Switch, underwhelmed by it or anything like that. That's a very respectable opinion. I don't think the "abusive towards consumers" criticism really applies. It does with the joycons though!

I'm kind of wondering what you were expecting besides Metroid. What games do you like on the Switch? What made you decide to buy it?

The Switch hardware sucks. A damn iPad Mini is better suited to gaming than a Switch. Give me a Switch Pro and I will start buying your products. Until then... No thanks.

DLSS and RTX.

I think they can get those on a next gen chip from NVIDIA in about 2 or 3 years.

Switch pro with DLSS 3.0 next year.

The Switch was very powerful for a handheld in 2017. A theoretical Vita successor wouldn't have been any more powerful.

To be fair I can not say Nintendo has always been two generations behind. The Wii had a hook that sold. The Wii U had a hook that didn't sell. The Switch has a hook that sells. While I do not own a Switch I can see the appeal of a system which can both be a handheld and be connected to a TV. If the Sony can somehow get the power of the PS5 in the form factor of the Switch for a reasonable price then all then all the power to them.

Switch is NOT two generations behind. It's just a weak current gen console.
Sorry but he way it runs the witcher 3 or just Dragon's dogma, it should be compared to my Xbox 360. Now they are saying that it will still be around when the PS5 and XSX will be well into the design of their mid-gen refreshes.
We'll just have to agree to disagree on that current gen thing.

They wouldn't really have to. Unless they are purposely adding programming into their current Tegra line (Xavier and Orin) that blocks the use of game development on it, there is no actual reason they can't be used for gaming. In fact, here is someone running emulators on the Tegra Xavier NX, which is supposed to be incapable of doing such.

The Xavier NX is the size of slightly taller Laptop RAM and according to nVidia (thanks to the tensor cores in it) it has a Floating Point rate of 3 TFLoPS. Yes, they market it as a development only board, but GPU cores are still GPU cores.
