Ubisoft's new battle royale Hyper Scape fixes many frustrations with the genre

Hyper Scape is a free to play battle royale that is available now on PC in a limited beta, and will be coming to consoles later this year. Some of the points below come from the video above, and some are my own thoughts after watching a fair bit of gameplay.

You just landed and you can't find a gun? Doesn't happen in this game. Weapons are everywhere, and arguably only one of them isn't very good.

You have a gun, but can't find any good attachments? There are no attachments. You simply fuse weapons together as you find more of the same gun you're using, and it becomes better. Four fusions equals a fully upgraded weapon.

You just got shot while in a looting menu? There are no "death boxes" in Hyper Scape, so that will never happen. Killing someone in the game simply results in them dropping the items that they were carrying, typically two weapons and two abilities.

Can't find armor, or shields, or health upgrades? None of that exists in this game. Health regenerates on it's own after not taking damage for a short while.

Now you're dead, and you have to wait to be revived? No, instead you become an "echo," and can still explore the map, practice your movement, communicate with your team, and even ping locations.

Teammates couldn't revive you in time, so now you're completely out of the game? No, you are never out of the game until all members of your team have been eliminated. Any remaining teammate simply has to get a single kill to be able to revive you. Revive points are created right where an enemy died, which gives you even more reason to stick with your teammates, even when you're in echo form.

Okay, you're revived, but now you have to run around looking for weapons and items again? No, you just get the weapons and abilities of the player who was killed. If you don't like them, you can find something else, but you're not helpless just because you're being brought back into the game.

Ended up dropping really far away from everyone else, and now you go through the first 10 minutes without seeing a single other player? Teams drop from all four corners of the map, which should help keep players a bit more evenly distributed.

Bad luck, and you're really far away from the next circle? Doesn't happen. Instead, the map is broken up into sectors, which decay and eventually disappear. Avoiding this hazard is as simple as moving to a neighboring sector.

You'd rather not take up over 100GB of space to play a battle royale? The preview build is only 8GB. Such a reasonable starting point gives the game a lot of room to grow without taking up a ton of your hard drive.

Add all of that up, and it's easy to see why this game might attract players who are typically annoyed by various aspects of other battle royale games. The real question is will a game so different than the current offerings in the genre be able find mainstream success? The movement in this game has more in common with Quake, Unreal Tournament, or Titanfall than it does with Apex, Warzone, or Fortnite. Is that something that could catch on again, or will it limit Hyper Scape to a niche fan-base?

I also wonder about the decision to have abilities that you can loot rather than characters with specific abilities. Does that limit the appeal of the characters and an important potential revenue source? If players enjoy the gameplay but don't connect with the game's characters, will they be less likely to purchase a battle pass? Either way, I hope the game only continues to improve, and that the developers don't drop the ball with this one, as it seems to have a lot of potential.

the gunplay is abysmal, the map layout is forgettable and bland, the controls are stiff and sometimes unresponsive and there are way too many movement abilities, resulting in every player shooting away from you at mach speed whenever you shoot at them.
it's not fun to almost kill someone, only for that guy then shooting 50m up in the sky and making himself invisible.

this game needs A LOT of rebalancing, improvements to the core gameplay and a retooling of the gun feedback.

I swear these stupid ass articles/videos are always the same when a new BR comes. Warzone is the battle royale we've been waiting for!!!! Apex Legends fixes whats wrong with BR!, etc.

But honestly, they were and still are right. The genre keeps improving and reducing its flaws and annoyances. Apex streamlined what Blackout offered, and Warzone improved upon both in certain ways. This game looks like it could make even more progress in that respect, but it also comes tied to a style of gameplay that isn't very popular these days. It's an interesting situation.

Ubisoft is the last thing I think of when I think of innovation or fun. So when you tell me a game of theirs is fixing a already tired genre I'm more than skeptical.

Looks like complete shit. The only great Battle Royale game is Apex Legends. Warzone has a lot of potential but too many frustrating elements hold it back for now.

Does it fix the frustration of too many fucking battle royales out there? I would probably say no.

You'd be correct. It does some tthings right in the end, is just another shitty battle royale. "Fastest FPS This Year" because by the time you realize you're being shot, you're dead. Shit game is shit.

If you're on PC you can watch a number of streamers and get drops to get access to check it out now. Maybe it'll be your cup of tea!

For me, it wasn't. But I'm just not into battle royales whatsoever. I love the FPS genre, but the core BR gameplay loop is just SO unappealing to me. I mean, I played two matches, and just uninstalled. I appreciate that the game is fast as it helps tick that arena shooter box, but everything else just isn't different enough for me. It still feels like things we've seen in other BRs and games. Another "new" game that's really just a Frankenstein of other things that are already out there. The "new" things it introduces just aren't enough to make the game stand out enough, and personally I don't see longevity.

Wanted to add that the art style and look of the game just feels so incredibly boring. It feels like a passionless project that Ubi just wanted to throw together to try and get a slice of that BR pie. Honestly, to me, it's hard to believe that this game is from a AAA company.

At what point is it no longer a battle royal and just team deathmatch? Because getting a free revive for every kill is kind of ridiculous.

Still think Warzone is the best by a mile, which is crazy because it really hasn't even been updated much. Take the *chefs kiss* COD movement/gunplay and attach it to something that isn't pure MLG twitchy deathmatch crap and look what you get! COD has always been frustrating for me because it always, since 4, felt sooooo fucking good to play, but I wanted absolutely nothing to do with the multiplayer. Or the single player for that matter lol

Interesting. Those really are all things I hate about BRs that this is removing. The math of them just being going from finding a match to spending time dead was always frustrating to me, and moving just like normal in ghost form to scout for your team is a good solution.

From the regular mode, you don’t get a free revive. Your teammate still has to go to a revive point and wait for you to meet them to revive them.

Apex really did bring the genre forward as a whole by concentrating the best bits and adding some QoL improvements of their own.

The only QoL inprovement this game brings to the table are the limited weapons, no perks, and “uograding” your gun if you find a duplicate. Everything else is trash for twitch shooting dweebs.

The only BR I’ve enjoyed is Apex.

The gunplay in this game sucks. All these nice variations on BR elements but they fucked up the most important part.

You forgot pinging. If you don't think that was a major improvement to multiplayer gaming in general and BR in particular your opinions on BR aren't worth the time it takes to read them.

But hey, we get the point, you really don't like Apex. ;) How many hours you have in it, 1000+?

It actually looks like they've removed many of the genres strengths as well.

It's like they made a BR for people who don't like BRs for some reason. Bold strategy, let's see if it pays off.

Blizzard better be working on a proper one right now. This is embarrassing.

All these mega wanker companies really want people sucked into their 'free' (heh) to play bullshit

It's actually quite vomit inducing.

People pissed about another BR is beyond me. There actually aren't THAT many BR games - and many of them are free to begin with. It's somewhat a new genre and people like free games man - especially kids/teens who have no income.

We get many bland games in other genres that charge us full price for something that often isn't even fun.

Since this thread is about HyperWhatever though - I knew this game was gonna have major issues when I saw the ridiculous abilities, ridiuclous cooldown, forgetful characters, tall buildings everywhere, and general lack of tension that is supposed to exist in a BR.

Yes indeed. We only need to look at the mobile space to see how great 'free' really is.

I think it is a great idea personally. "Blue ocean" strategy. The standard battle royale market is crowded and breaking in will be difficult, if not impossible. If you don't do something different, the fans of traditional battle royale will likely ignore you. This game is for people like me, who like competitive FPS, but don't care for the single chance plus you are given followed by the waiting around after you inevitably die.

That is unfortunate to hear about the gunplay. As much as I am interested, I won't bother playing an FPS with poor gunplay. Though most PC FPS games have horrid gunplay by default, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.

I watched the seagull impressions video. According to him (he is very good at fps) "the game needs a lot of help. Movement is crazy, you are almost stuck with the same 2 abilities because you need movement skills to try to finish a wounded guy (everybody regenerates). Also the sniper is crazy OP and makes the game boring."

For what I've seen the game is bland in every aspect but the graphics. It looks cool as fuck (if a bit samey with the environments) with the futuristic windows and take on the closing circle.

Also some things to point out:
It's HITSCAN. I don't think it's a good thing for a BR but oh well.
60 tick servers. Way better than other BRs.

Your reading comprehension is adorable. What game is this thread about?

Hint: Not Apex dumb fuck.

BR isn't some repetitive gacha game poor souls are addicted to. As soon as something is "pay to win" - I no longer blame the devs for it, but the users.

Free is actually free in the BR genre. You can pay for cosmetics,: skins, colours whatever - but nothing that alters gameplay in any way.

This is probably the greatest first post I'll ever see.

Sounds like someone who has no clue how this game is designed and why it's designed a certain way. And also probably really bad at the game and getting angry over the simple fact that are you too lazy to understand how game mechanics, hacks, movement and guns work in this game. I hope I will meet you in-game and shoot your face off.

P.S. Your post is abysmal.
