Hyper Scape is a free to play battle royale that is available now on PC in a limited beta, and will be coming to consoles later this year. Some of the points below come from the video above, and some are my own thoughts after watching a fair bit of gameplay.
You just landed and you can't find a gun? Doesn't happen in this game. Weapons are everywhere, and arguably only one of them isn't very good.
You have a gun, but can't find any good attachments? There are no attachments. You simply fuse weapons together as you find more of the same gun you're using, and it becomes better. Four fusions equals a fully upgraded weapon.
You just got shot while in a looting menu? There are no "death boxes" in Hyper Scape, so that will never happen. Killing someone in the game simply results in them dropping the items that they were carrying, typically two weapons and two abilities.
Can't find armor, or shields, or health upgrades? None of that exists in this game. Health regenerates on it's own after not taking damage for a short while.
Now you're dead, and you have to wait to be revived? No, instead you become an "echo," and can still explore the map, practice your movement, communicate with your team, and even ping locations.
Teammates couldn't revive you in time, so now you're completely out of the game? No, you are never out of the game until all members of your team have been eliminated. Any remaining teammate simply has to get a single kill to be able to revive you. Revive points are created right where an enemy died, which gives you even more reason to stick with your teammates, even when you're in echo form.
Okay, you're revived, but now you have to run around looking for weapons and items again? No, you just get the weapons and abilities of the player who was killed. If you don't like them, you can find something else, but you're not helpless just because you're being brought back into the game.
Ended up dropping really far away from everyone else, and now you go through the first 10 minutes without seeing a single other player? Teams drop from all four corners of the map, which should help keep players a bit more evenly distributed.
Bad luck, and you're really far away from the next circle? Doesn't happen. Instead, the map is broken up into sectors, which decay and eventually disappear. Avoiding this hazard is as simple as moving to a neighboring sector.
You'd rather not take up over 100GB of space to play a battle royale? The preview build is only 8GB. Such a reasonable starting point gives the game a lot of room to grow without taking up a ton of your hard drive.
Add all of that up, and it's easy to see why this game might attract players who are typically annoyed by various aspects of other battle royale games. The real question is will a game so different than the current offerings in the genre be able find mainstream success? The movement in this game has more in common with Quake, Unreal Tournament, or Titanfall than it does with Apex, Warzone, or Fortnite. Is that something that could catch on again, or will it limit Hyper Scape to a niche fan-base?
I also wonder about the decision to have abilities that you can loot rather than characters with specific abilities. Does that limit the appeal of the characters and an important potential revenue source? If players enjoy the gameplay but don't connect with the game's characters, will they be less likely to purchase a battle pass? Either way, I hope the game only continues to improve, and that the developers don't drop the ball with this one, as it seems to have a lot of potential.
