According to Sony China, at the annual shareholders meeting last Friday, shareholders approved the proposal to change the company name to “Sony Group”. The change of name will take effect in April 2021.

Sony’s CEO, Yoshida Kenichiro said: “We decided to rename the company to the SonyGroup because we want to make full use of the diversity of our business portfolio to promote the development and evolution of the business.”

The Japanese company did not actually start off as “Sony”
Well, the original name of Sony is “Tokyo Telecommunications Industry Co., Ltd.”. However, this name was changed in 1958 to “Sony”. At the time, the name “Sony” represents co-founder Shoda Morita’s ambition to create a global brand. Yoshida believes that the upcoming changes will lead the company to the next new stage.

"Group" is a common English translation of the Japanese Zaibatsu. After losing WW2 they got their name changed to Keiretsu, but still pretty much the same thing. A gigantic corporation that was intentionally fostered by the government.

In the West, giant corporations lobby for tax breaks. In the East, governments give tax breaks to initially small companies, to make them into giant corporations deliberately.

Samsung is South Korea's very successful imitation of the Japanese model.

People joke, but I guess I am the only one here who thinks of "Group" in a sinister air. Because talking about "Group" leads to images of Dystopian Megacorps. Japan's economy is not what it used to be of course, but the feeling is there all the same.

From the article I read about it, it is about leveling the separate components of the Group, having them all be acknowledged. "Corp" still had the air of being a CEC and SONY is much more than that now.

I think a lot of this has to do with basically giving a middle finger to Daniel Loeb. Nothing says fuck you to a person that wanted to break up the company more than changing the name to Sony Group. It's just a stupid name change, but it does confirm that Sony plans on keeping all of its businesses together.
