Cyberpunk 2077 Won’t Be Censored In Australia But Japan’s Version Will Be Fairly Different

It was revealed late last week that Cyberpunk 2077 will be heavily censored in Japan.

The Japanese version will receive the following changes:
  • Added underwear to naked male/female characters
  • Revised some sexually explicit content
  • Selective revision of severing human body/exposed guts
  • Revision/removal of billboard/graffiti shaped as genitals

It’s now been 100% confirmed that the Australian version won’t be censored at all. The game was rated R18+ earlier this year, and will release in Australia unedited and uncensored.

It's been about 9 years since the R18 rating came in here.

Haven't they still outright banned games in that time due to representations of drug use?

Not that I'm aware of.

They have, or at least banned them until changes were made removing the drug stuff.

That's all that surprises me, knowing that Cyberpunk, according to the ESRB, "contains frequent depictions and references to fictional drugs, including characters taking puffs/hits from a state-altering inhaler/stimulant; an animated billboard ad depicts a man snorting speed". Maybe they're rethinking things.

Thankfully they can just download the other versions thanks to NO DRM!

This is why I’m importing cyberpunk from the US. CERO is so draconian with their rules on what’s allowed and what’s not and it’s ridiculous. All it does is piss off gamers here. I don’t even understand what the difference between a z rated game and a d rated game is anymore. But yeah the common rule here, if you want to play a game from the west and it’s rated z, just go ahead and import it cause 99% of the time it’s censored in some way.

Japan is a bit weird. Can depict someone getting fucked with a creature's tentacle but oh no let's censor a penis!

I thought this was about adding mechas.

it's one of those moments when you realize that all those weaboos complaining at Western PlayStation censoring panties and titties in Japanese games got the joke on them.

Sounds like it could be USA too. ;)

Do a lot of players import games just for uncensored content? Or do most just don't care?

Japan has always been weird about censoring gore, they did the same with a few RE games and remember they censor their pornography so games shouldn’t be much different.

the issue is that it would get a Cero Z rating if it was full of gore, and that's like an AO rating in the US, so big chains wouldn't sell it and noone would advertise it.

some games come out in 2 versions or have an uncensored DLC to get around this. Lollipop Chainsaw is one of these games for example.

i mean you are right if we talk in general, but we are talking about cd project here, they don't shy from good looking women or cleavage or sex scenes or really nothing.
My replies are to the thread itself. I think it's insane to criticize Japan on censorship. They mostly censor extreme violence/dismemberment.

That said, I believe censorship is wrong, period.

i was just joking dude, i know very well that japs are less prude than western devs in games, especially during the last years.
I noticed it was a joke, just used it to make a point to people criticizing Japan.

No direct attacks or anything. :messenger_winking:

im not sure how many do but I do know there are quite many that do. For example I’ve read many of the last of us 2 reviews on amazon where many who gave the game a 1 star review was for the censorship in the violence and the sex scene, and in many of those reviews they said they went out and bought the US version as well cause of it. Stores that sale import copies of games in Akihabara will sometimes make a point about how the western version is uncensored or how a game isn’t being sold in Japan cause of cero, like mortal kombat. But due to the lack of Japanese on these titles on the uncensored versions it’s probably not a high number of purchasers. But certainly it’s been growing as sites like amazon japan have been offering import games for years now and they are popular.

as for those of us who live in japan from abroad, we just either get the game from the us or Europe online stores digitally or go for the physical copy. Although most people I know go for the digital to save some money. That’s what I do. Also western digital PSN cards are sold at stores in akihabara and on amazon japan for people who want the western games, especially the uncensored or not for sale games here.
