I love that the continued overly negative and irrational criticism from some people out there has arguably contributed to its success.

UPDATE: It's fine if someone doesnt like something, but that person should at least go into it and experience it - with a clear head - before deciding to continually whine about it.

Does this put it up there with MS biggest ever launch? Wasn't Halo in the 4M ball park once upon a time or was that shipped?

I would think so, as TLOU is bigger by quite some margin than any MS franchise in terms of total sales. I think Halo's biggest was 11m, whereas TLOU ended up with 17-18m at least.

In terms of highest sales in the first few days, i dont have any figs.

As always, a primary factor in determining a game’s sales is the reception to its predecessor.

DMC3 is the worst-selling game in the DMC the franchise, but is considered to be one of the best in the series. This is because it had to follow DMC2.

TLOUII followed TLOU, it was never going to sell poorly. ND's next game, especially if it's an entry into this franchise, will likely sell worse.

Well, when you refuse return of copies purchased you don't have to subtract from initial sales numbers or do revisions. On it's own selling 4 million in launch period's quite good but I think there's going to be a very sharp drop in sales from here on. WOM with this game among the casuals and mainstream just isn't there to sustain strong sales.

I can actually see the sales topping out at 5-6 million overall and that's after a few more months on shelves. If they want more after that, they'll need to aggressively discount it and pack it in as a free game with PS4s and PS5s, and that's if Sony cares to do so by then.

This is a joke post right? Please Thicc.......does be this person. I respect you too much.

That's true, except in this case it isn't. If the gameplay wasn't good I'd agree with you. But the combat is awesome. And that's not even mentioning all the care put into everything else.

Fuck the faux outrage surrounding this game. Nitpicks and critiques are one thing, overblown hate is another.

I never said I hated the game tho. Animations in TLOU2 are probably the best in gaming history. A lot of people don't care about the story. It does apply to this game as well though. There are no exceptions. My thoughts on the story are still mixed but everything else is high quality but did most of us really play it for the gameplay and graphics or were we curious about Ellie and Joel's fate? If people are so indifferent or loved Abby I wonder if the game will have the same amount of sales if she was on the cover of TLOU3. I'm going to go with nah.

My plan today is to watch someone play through Part 1 then Part 2 since I won't have time to play through it myself. Anyone know a good person to watch?

Its still is the best selling even if you only count ps4 copies
This is a thread about PS4 exclusives. Did you miss that?

So what happened to UC3 and UC4's massive sales. People are wishing ND games decline rather than they actually do. People are wishing that ND games bomb critically than they actually do. ND always comes out on top vs these pessimistic type outlooks. Just as theanti-Druckmann, LOU2 pitchforkers still cant seem to eat their crow peacefully. but are yet arguing on another tangent. If we were to listen to them, LOU2 sucked, it would fail critically and sales would be worse than part 1, the age of ND and Druckmann is done. How many times must ND prove naysayers wrong, how many more high Meta's, how many more GOTY's and Multi-million saftware sales do they need?

I mean, I'm only going by what I've seen from other people playing the game. Streamers I thought who'd be down to play it don't seem to have reason to keep playing after "that" happens, and a few other things. So many Youtube reviews not really taking to the game. Even Variety and Polygon didn't seem like they enjoyed playing through it all that much.

I think strong WOM really boosted TLOU1 plus it moving over to PS4 early on. But TLOU2? Honestly I don't think it's there. Yeah the MC's gotten review-bombed with negative reviews but you'd think if the non-trolls enjoyed the game as much there'd be a lot of positive fan reviews to balance out the user score and make it somewhat respectable. That hasn't happened, though so I guess even the mainstream casual types who never followed any of the drama either don't care enough to review it or reviewed it negatively.

MC should never be the end-all be-all for determining a game's worth, but it definitely shows a divide between critics and gamers on the game. I think that's gonna affect long-term sales momentum, no doubt.

But I've seen and heard many gamers say it's their game of the year too. So......how big of a divide is it really?

We’re delighted to report that The Last of Us Part II is now the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive ever with more than 4 million copies sold through as of June 21. This milestone would not have been reached without the support from our amazing fans, so on behalf of everyone at SIE, thank you! The Last of Us Part II represents large scale innovation in gaming with a great blend of excellent gameplay mechanics and masterful storytelling. All of this came together to deliver a generation defining experience and the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive.

We strive to bring you unique, engaging experiences and while we look towards the next generation, there are still a ton of great games coming to PS4. That includes two fantastic PS4 exclusives in the very near term: Marvel’s Iron Man VR on July 3, and Ghost of Tsushima soon after on July 17.

I'm actually happy it sold so well. To me TLOU2 is worst than the prequel but it's a good game and Sony needed a break because lately PS4 exclusive are always sorrounded by controversy one way or another. It started with Days Gone in early 2019 being hated by the media and selling mildly, then Death Stranding being divisive and selling poorly, Medievil and Concrete Genie were almost ignored by everybody, and although Dreams is supposed to have long legs currently has only a small cult following. The Last of Us Part II seems to have broken that unsuccesful run of exclusives after a long period when Sony could do no wrong but once again with divisivness and controversy.

If you ask me TLOU2 is reaping what the original TLOU sawed but I don't think a Part III would do so well. The general public doesn't follow videogames news and controversies as close as hardcore players but the sequel won't be as popular as the original TLOU because its themes are a lot darker and less casual friendly. IMO this IP is exhausted.

I don’t know why this surprises me. The game fucking rules but i guess i assumed the obnoxious review bombing would hurt the game. guess not!

I’m really happy for naughty dog. they deserve it. After working so hard on the game and enduring all the leaks and the autistic lil vigrins screaming because the game made some risky choices, these bonkers sales numbers probably feels real nice.

This also proves the theory that an angry vocal minority doesn’t actually speak for the masses.

Comparing TLOU1 to 2 the sequel has a massive advantage early on in terms of revenue. I'm not sure what the first sold at launch but the sequel has sold millions more at full price and millions more digitally. I'd imagine the collectors and deluxe editions sold far more too.

Obviously the budget will be bigger but even if the sequel sells less in the end the profit made should be far higher. Hopefully the multiplayer is good.

Not to mention the eventual PS5 version. TLOU/TLOu Remaster are at 18m+ copies. Considering TLOU2 launched with an install base of 110m+ consoles vs 87m on PS3 for the first game, I can see TLOU2 selling over 20m including the PS5 version.

Previous sell-through records:
  • God of War - 3.1M in 3 days
  • Spider-man - 3.3M in 3 days

Some additional infos gathered :
  • Best Sony launch ever in UK (physical)
  • Best Sony launch ever in Spain / Russia / Czech Republic / Slovakia
  • Biggest launch ever in Russia for a game released on PlayStation platforms (beating GTA V, previous record holder)
  • Biggest launch of 2020 in Germany
  • Most preordered Sony game ever in Brazil
  • TLOU Part II was more preordered in Europe at the same point than Spider-Man
In this case it seems that it will pass the 20M units sold milestone after all its life sales cycle.

BAAAAAHAHAHA...........there's still people in here trying to justify the sales (the SAME old people)........... "well lets see how it does in a week :messenger_pouting:" ...........bitch, give up! GO! Lets see how it does in a week? The Last of Us got spoken about for years. Why you mad? For all that 'feminist woke stuff' they put in the game (honestly didn't bat an eye to it).......it sure feels like a game made for the fans and the players.

Yeah you're right, TLOU sales had a very, very long tail whereas TLOU2 has sold more right out the gate at full price, so revenue generated will surely surpass the first.
