Facebook Acquires Ready At Dawn

Completely at odds with the things the studio wanted to work on, but fair enough to them. They got business done.
Care to tell us what RAD wanted to work on? They look quite happy working on the sequel to their successful Lone Echo.

Honestly, FB needs to find a better brand to advance their gaming image. FB is increasingly a repository for people to re-post political content to espouse their already apparent allegiances. Or to get mad at something they could give less than two shits about.
They already have for the last few years. It's called Oculus.

This... doesn’t sound good. I don’t even care about who gets what, but will RAD even get to make traditional games here? For every Half Life: Alyx, there’s waves of gimmicky, disappointing stuff.

I guess I need to research their last VR game.
Check out Lone Echo. It's one of the earliest VR games and it still pops up on "best of" lists. I haven't been able to play it yet since I only own PSVR but it's quite a looker even on video.

How did Amazon's acquisition turn out for them? How long before Google shutters their Stadia studio? What happened to Facebook's own VR meddling?
Where are we going, Papa Facebook?
Facebook's VR division is going quite well according to them. They're expanding their porftolio of first party studios more and more each year and have a very strong exclusive game library. They're the 4th big console manufacturer but nobody has realized this yet.

Clicking through to the "Join the Team" link, we get a little bit more information on the upcoming project. It is, reads the Ready At Dawn website, "A new, third-person AAA action console title, based on a brand-new, original IP."

What probably happened is that AAA game got axed, they didn't update their careers tab, and with no way to support a company on VR games alone, they took whatever FB offered them.

Well fuck....... Don't mean to be a Debby downer but I loathe FB

Does Sony own the rights to the Order, or just publishing rights?

So what you're saying is... we won't get a RAD sequel?

It’s a bit of a surprise, but this will probably keep them in positive cash flow which is good for them. As for what they put out, I need to play The Order. I did enjoy their takes on God of War which I still play on my PS3.

I feel more and more like the industry is moving away from traditional games and from me. Whether its Rocksteady making a live service game over Superman, and now Ready at Dawn making VR only games for Facebook. Bungie hasn't made anything I want to play since Halo Reach. Bioware's last game was Anthem(live service game)Crystal Dynamics making (Avengers looks like a super linear co op live service game full of small demo's for each player)Bethesda is moving more and more towards shitty live services games with Fallout 76 and the list goes on and on.

I got to give Sony credit for at least sticking to great single play driven games. Good thing I guess is that i'll be saving a lot of money from not buying video games. Oh well

They already have for the last few years. It's called Oculus.
Oculus isn’t holistic, it signifies a specific product line in the gaming segment under FB’s management. Plus it’s typically marketed as Oculus by Facebook in many of their marketing materials, as though the market needs to know or has forgotten.

I don't know, it makes sense to me.

Lone Echo is the only good game they made this gen.... Or hell, it's the only good game they made that's not on PSP (or a port).

If they want to go all in on VR it makes sense to join a VR Hardware maker.

Honestly I haven't paid much attention to Oculus/Facebook but it all just sounds like Microsoft Xbox and Sony PlayStation to me, as in tech companies that have a gaming division, and I figure the average person isn't that aware as well.

Welp.....there goes any chance of a sequel for The Order 1886. Oh well.

RIP

This is one acquisition I did not see coming. Everyone assumed Sony buying them out was a sure thing due to their history (myself included)

I will miss you RAD 😢

Which is the opossite of what VR users have been expecting. Everyone assumed Oculus was going to buy them out at some point because of their games they've done for Oculus since 2017. Which -according to some- have fared better than anything else they've done before their move to VR. Almost as if... they've finally found something that they truly excel at.

The order 1886 really burned the bridge between Sony and RAD.
It’s bound to happen. RAD was able to move to anew Studio. I still think RAD prefers to work with Sony with their recent tweet but Sony doesn’t want to. Such shame. In the light of MS acquiring studios and other companies like Amazon, Facebook and Google.

I am getting scared for Housemarque. 😰
I am glad Insomniac was acquired already since they were also exclusively creating games for Oculus.

Does this mean they won't be making games for consoles anymore?

I think I read somewhere they will still operate as independent studio after the acquisition so maybe there is still a possibility that they can still make console games but then Lone Echo is good and probably sequel coming, given that they are not that huge team they will be tied to that sequel

Naughty Dog make The Order 1887. Idc what you do to the story. First one’s was trash anyway. I just want to go back to that world with better gun play.

Lol. I think its time to throw The Order franchise away.

I don’t understand the major issue here? Hasn’t most of their recent success been on oculus? I assume this is just oculus studios acquiring them to work on VR full time

Ready at Dawn's new game announced.

Sell Out VR

Grab your VR goggles and enter the corporate world where you take control of a company known for making shallow games, whose goals is to maximize an acquisition price.

- First build your company history by making ports
- Next put yourself on the map with an all-graphics, no-gameplay product
- You try to maximize company value, but are forced to face a downturn as you try to go it alone as a multiplatform company with failing products
- From here is where you try to maximize sell out value by lying about having an AAA game in development on your company's career page, making VR games, and then analyzing which company to sell out to for the highest bid
- Regardless of acquirer, game quality or platform release, the higher the price you sell out for the more you win
- Gameplay is exclusive to sitting in office sending emails and leaving messages trying to sell out. Boss fights are the equivalent to getting a face to face meeting and sitting in front of a team of execs grilling you why it's worth buying you out
- Dialogue tree gameplay allows Lawful or Chaotic Good and Evil responses

It's a shame, I think it would have been a better fit to be purchased by Sony. The Order had its flaws but in many areas it was a world class top tier game and it was only their first AAA home console game. Before that they did an awesome job with God of War on the portables.

They would have been a great addition for PSVR games, a The Order sequel fixing its flaws, creating great worls in new IPs and contributing to the Sony engines and tools, I think they would have added many cool things for Sony and I think Sony would have helped them in many areas.

Instead they go with Facebook, a company who maybe got bored of VR in a couple of years and shut down their VR gaming division.

Made a crappy phPBB forum once ... once.
If you don’t post it on your timeline and send it to 20 people, Facebook will make your private account publicly visible to everyone.

FB has deep pockets. If there's any secret deals that surface in the future I'd bet any money Sony offered to buy them, but FB paid more.

RAD has the perfect combo of what Sony looks for..... partnerships in the past, SP story based games, and even VR experience if Sony wanted to shift them to do VR instead. With their experience they could flip flop between traditional game and VR game for PS5.

MS also has deep pockets and look what they did with Mixer. FB also shut down stuff that didn't work for them. Gaming and specially VR needs time and I'm not sure if FB will have enough patience.

FB going all in on gaming now too? I think FB is the only company I loathe as much as Google. I hope they both fail spectacularly.
