Famitsu teases “huge scoop” for 4th June, akin to Wired’s PS5 article (likely Sega related)

Key word here that everyone seems to be neglecting,"Revolutionary". Merger/new game/mini dreamcast dont really fall under this category i'd think.

New tech being utilised on the ps5 maybe? New arcade technology? New Game engine? Maybe.

Key word you're neglecting is Famitsu..... and "column". Its not even a proper feature...

Nothing worthy of the term "revolutionary" is going to be announced in a Japanese specialist gaming magazine.

If its Famitsu it's something of interest in Japan but not such great interest Sega want to announce it themselves.

It's gonna be a streaming service that allows online multiplayer of sega games - something along those lines. Perhaps theyre joining Stadia...

I'm banking on Sega being bought by Microsoft.

You should take out some insurance .... that isn't going to be announced in a Famitsu column.

Microsoft purchasing Sega pssssshhhh. I don’t think thats news worthy for Japan. The Japanese dont even like Microsoft so it would be dumb on Sega’s part to be bought out from MS. Only thing I see ms doing is purchasing a couple of ips from Sega. As of purchasing the whole company that’s wishful thinking.

If Microsoft were to purchase Sega they better rebrand the Xbox Series X console as a Sega Console in Japan if they want to see some type of success from it.

This is my prediction too, minus the Microsoft purchasing Sega part. Just an arrangement between the two companies so Sega would handle the localization, redesign and distribution of the console in Japan, calling it Sega Neptune X or something like that to make it more palatable for the Japanese audience.

This would be my prediction as well. if Xbox was branded Sega in Japan it would do wonders for them on so many levels. Alsto the exclusive release of the new fantasy star on xbox had me thinking. Imo there are very few things that could be done to have an impact in japan the world abroad.

Also wasn't microsoft there recently? it could also be a publishing deal of sorts, similar to the original Xbox launch.

My guesses:
- Hardware wise: something sega saturn related would be nice. It also ties in with Segata Sanshiro and his son commercials.
- Acquisition is very VERY unlikely.
-Sony partnership the same day as the PS5 event is plausible.

I almost missed this thread. Yeah, next week will have a bunch of surprises. Maybe SOR4 give SEGA hope for better quality games.

Uhm.... Maybe some big exclusive for Xbox sx, I believe Virtua Fighter next gen and a return of some beloved franchise like rez or panzer dragoon.

No way is this an acquisition, "revolutionary" suggests some kind of technical thing. Maybe it's some kind of cloud/streaming service, but with thousands of Saturns/Drramcasts etc hooked up in a huge server centre, allowing you to play any Sega game from any device.

I would prefer an all in one console that cn play any Sega game from any Sega console, with Sega re-releasing old games.

A more likely possibility is that the stuff about "riling up" the industry etc is just hyperbole. It might just be Virtua Fighter 6, but with really nice graphics.

If it's Virtua Fighter I'll be pleased. I love all entries, what an enjoyable fighting game.

The Sega thing sounded like he was being cheeky.
He also stated that it was a company that everyone loves.
The only gaming company you could reasonably say that about is Nintendo (their IP at least).

I think it's a next generation 4K Nintendo console, with that free-form display controller concept in it's patents.
And it will have an optical disc drive for next-gen third party games and Nintendo 1st/2nd party next-gen caliber games and you will only be able to get Switch games digitally, unless you connect a Switch or Switch Lite to the console.

A few points:
1. Nintendo has their regular direct out of the way.
2. Their advertising budget for this year is the same as Switch's launch year .
3. Their R&D budget for last year and this year is the highest it's ever been.
4. They specifically stated there would be no new Switch hardware, not that there wouldn't be any new hardware.
5. The OS update they did recently that allowed file transfers (which if you have two systems that are "like brothers" as Iwata referred to the future concept, you would require) and the ability to modify controller inputs (which you would need if you have a controller with virtual buttons. )
6. Digitimes has reported more than once that Nintendo is releasing a new console this year, citing multiple sources.
7. A SHARP executive told WSJ that the IGZO display they were producing for a gaming platform, was for "Nintendo's new game machines."

Not "Dreamcast 2" could mean it's not related to a new hardware, because even a cheap or portable device would be intended as Dreamcast 2 by fans.
Could be a Saturn Mini, but I wouldn't considered it something similar to a PS5 reveal or even "revolutionary".

I think it is some sort of partnership or acquisition.

It's Samsung. I love Samsung. Everyone loves to play games on Samsung devices. I all make sense. Samsung console.

If this happened I would pay a kidney but I would import it and have the Japanese console.

I really hope Microsoft didn't buy Sega.. but considering how close the two are..

That and the fact Microsoft is still sitting on, what, $12b (U.S.) in the money they repatriated and used for their acquisitions?

Honestly, I wouldn't expect Microsoft to buy Sega outright because of their non-vidja gamez businesses, but I can see Sega being a distribution partner in Japan or being an exclusive first party for the entirety of this generation.

When Sega and Microsoft were in sync on the XBox, there was magic there. GunValkyrie, JSRF, PanzerDragoon Orta...those are some of the best games of all time right there, all on the OG XBox. Recreate that, and I'll throw my wallet at Microsoft faster than Randy Johnson can hurl a fastball.

L O L at those saying Sega will be bought.

As many have said in this very thread Sega/Sammy is huge and they aren't exactly looking to be bought, they are much more than just a video games company.

Yes. If Microsoft was going to buy a Japanese game company (or two), there are far more realistic and cheaper acquisition targets (e.g. Capcom, Konami) whose assets and back catalog gamers would go ape s*** about.

I doubt any of these companies would be up for sale or even a hostile take over, Konami like Sega isn't just a video games company, same goes for Capcom they are making gangbusters this gen and let's not forget about Tencent and Sony who have helped them before financialy.

I’m curious what kind of device this would be. A revolutionary device? Interesting.

Sega to buy Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo and launch the Sega Uranus console which is basically the PS5 soldered to the innards of the new Xbox with an 8k Switch screen coming out its ass.

Stays on here.

I think this could be some sort of online service for sega games. I would love arcade ports of their model 1 to 3 and naomi, but that probably won’t happen due to licensing issues. The dreamcast wasn’t popular enough to warrant a mini console and most of the games have been remastered anyway.

First thing that came to my mind was those "mini" versions of console. But could be an exclusive?

It's difficult to compreend exactly the meaning behind "huge scoop" from a person. It could mean a big deal for the one leaking but nothing to us really.

Pretty sure next week and the rest of June will be pretty wild regardless.
Even if Microsoft buys Sega, that's great, but overall meh.
Microsoft needs to create another Halo level IP next gen. They did not have much luck with killer apps this gen at all (Sony on the other hand....)

As much as I am a Sega fanboy, at this point I don't think they have anything big enough to rile the industry as a whole level... unless it's a new console, which I highly doubt.

I will support the new console if they do come out - but I am not confident in its future. I guess that's the part of being a Sega fan, that knowing they'll fuck up somehow, walking on the tight ropes, still supporting them. Sorta like rooting for the underdogs....

A Samsung console huh? You think they’ll seriously enter the console race against the Big 3? Sounds interesting but I doubt it. We’ll have to see though.

Could be Microsoft brought SEGA, the catch is SEGA can still release games only on PC/switch no more Sony. Also could see a Dreamcast mini maybe?

Fat Frog

I advertised for Google Stadia
XBOX had a chance to be the Dreamcast 2 but Sega and Microsoft didn't an agreement.

Virtua Fighter, F355, Yakuza, REZ were on PS2, Sonic Adventure 2, Beach Spikers, F-Zero GX, Billy Hatcher on Gamecube... all 3 consoles had good Sega exclusives.

If Microsoft finds a way to secure over 80% of Sega exclusives on Serie X then we can start talking of a Dreamcast 2.

Back in the day, it was 2006, I really thought it was possible to Samsung to enter into game market with its console for various reasons: rising of Korean gaming market and Korean MMOs, lot of components builted in house (drives, memories, chips, even CPUs), a company with tons of money, etc.

But the market changed a lot in few years: first the boom of browser gaming (Farmville), then the mobile gaming with the app stores. There was no need to create an home console anymore.
