Another Massive Call of Duty Modern Warfare Update. I've had enough.

I'm deleting the game. I've had it. Yet another large update, 21.61 GB, bringing to total to over 200 GB in file size. The update only takes me around 12-15 minutes to download, but the overall size of the game takes a long time to copy over. I don't know what these guys are doing. This is hugely inefficient. Is anyone else bothered by this?

I don't know why developers stopped using compression. Or whatever compression they were using last generation. I remember when whole games were around 7gb. Then it jumped to 50gb for 1080p games. It's fucking ridiculous.

I believe this game in particular, the engine is resource heavy and needs things to be uncompressed in able to have the ability to stream the assets on the fly.

Game is trash anyway. (hot taking, sorry)
Most of the big CoD youtubers agree with you. They freely admit they're only playing it for the views and if they didn't have to, they wouldn't. It's better on the old maps they've introduced, but that's not saying much. Most of the maps that shipped with the game are comically bad.

One of the best CODs in awhile IMO. That being said, I haven't fired it up in eons and these file sizes haven't helped, lmao. I can see myself uninstalling as well.

The problem is duplication of information. As hard drives are so slow, common assets like street lights, or just anything the game needs to pull on a regular basis, can be duplicated up to hundreds of times, so the data can be pulled off the hard drive faster.

Obviously, this leads to a massive increase in space taken.

The hope is that next-gen, SSDs put an end to this practice, with space savings, but with UE5 now allowing for Hollywood-quality assets, who knows?

Love the battle royale but they seem to break more stuff than they fix with every update also there's nothing more annoying than going to play then you get an update notification for it to take so much time to install can't play for ages ... Why doesn't it update like most other games on the PS4 while in rest mode though ? .

This shit is ridiculous. My buddy bought this game the other day and I told him the updates were going to be brutal and he has slow internet. He couldn't even play the first day and a half. Then I told him just wait until it gets to the copying phase which is another 30+ minutes. He's going to be delighted to know he has to download another 20gb update.

This shit is just uncalled for. I really hope this is not a thing next gen.

It is ridiculous, I agree. I wanted to download the free version of DOA6 last night, and when I saw it was a 60GB download, for a fighting game, and would take me eons to download + clog up my hard drive, I just simply dropped it.

That isn't good for gaming, making impulse buys way less desirable and spontaneous.

It's even worse on PS4, where some Galaxy Brain decided to add that weird copying thing for some downloads, which seems to take many times longer than the actual download. My number one requested feature for PS5 is removing that, even ahead of beautiful next-gen visuals.

Honestly the updates have slowed down dramatically. It was insane at first because we were getting them weekly, but it's really been a while, and today's is because of new multiplayer maps. Making all new map DLC free has been huge to me as someone who used to buy the map packs in the past. There has been so much (free) post release content that I can put up with some big downloads now and again.

Also leave your PS4 in rest mode so it'll download when you're not using it. I don't think it helps the "copying" portion though.

It does. I had my ps4 in rest mode overnight and I woke up today to it downloaded and installed lol the only thing I had to do was the usual reset upon entering the game which takes less than a minute.

I think PS5 will remedy some of this.

They already addressed that on the Cerny presentation.

The PS5 will be extremely fast at installing games. And the PS4 is like that because of some reasons that I don't remember... :messenger_grinning_sweat:

About CoD....They probably want people to have only one or two games installed... Imagine having a PS4 or Xbox with a 500gb hard drive... The person has to make choices, and, most of times, the more popular game will win, which will probably make the player more susceptible to spend on their games...

Destiny 2 also do this kind of garbage.

This never works for me. It's always start up the console, then it starts downloading. Which is about as frustrating as the copying thing.

I don't want to give ammo to console warriors to start a fight, so I'll say that PS4 is a excellently designed piece of tech that has held up to this day, still pushing visual standards in games like FF7, but those two things irritate me like crazy.

Xbox 360 let you install games to the hard drive. Average game size then was 7gb. But they used compression back then.

Again, duplication. 360 games weren't duplicating data hundreds of times across your hard drive. Those were optional installs, and the games could play off disc alone.

Really ? I've never been able to do this but have been successful with all the other games apart from bl4 and mw it's just won't update through rest mode for me.

Its not the same engine. MW runs on a new engine for the first time since COD2.
Well no wonder people don't like the game then. I'm always skeptical of "new engines" so called. Look at what Beth did with Gamebryo. They re-wrote the renderer and called it a new engine. A (real) new engine is like what CDPR made for Witcher 2.

Because they know consoles come with 1TB standard and most core gamers have another external drive with another 2TB.

During the 360 gen, I had the 20gb system right up to 2012 when I got a 250gb Slim. And the only reason I got it is because I finally got a RROD after 6 years of gaming.

But with that 20gb starting system, somehow every patch, XBLA game, map pack, OS update, indie XBLIG game, free dashboard themes stored perfectly fine. I even had a couple Oblivion DLC downloads.

Why the fuck is a COD game 200GB?

Long short story, starting with PC versions they were reducing compression. Black Ops 1 was 25 GB, Black Ops 2 was apparently 35-50GB, BO 3 is a humongous 100GB and it came on six discs in two boxes. By COD Ghosts the Xbox 360 versions had two discs.

Yeah it's unacceptable, both in terms of total size and patch sizes. They're not rebuilding the game completely like for example Bend has done with Days Gone. There's no justification for it other than lacking skill and/or not giving a fuck about the customers, especially those with slower Internet connections.

I am not going to pretend I have done a deep dive into the new engine but from what I have read and seen there was a serious amount of work put in to rebuild it from the ground up from every aspect. Similar to ID Tech, I am sure somethings were moved over, but for the most part is was rebuilt due to a lot of low level code on many things simply being very inefficient with the new tech they wanted to push on the visual forefront. This was with next gen in mind.

So it's a regression in game design then. That doesn't surprise me given how much regression there seems to be in this industry these days.

There's no good reason for a goddamn first person shooter to be 50gb, let alone 200gb. Either they aren't using compression or they're using a bad kind of compression. Just look at the official texture pack from Fallout 4. 50 goddamn gigabytes and the texture quality is shit. The texture mods for the game are less than half that size and are better. I don't know what the hell game developers have against compression these days. Or efficiency for that matter.

It used to work for me until 6-8 months ago. Now I have the same issue. Everything is checked and setup correctly for all updates to download and install while in rest mode. It just doesn't do it anymore. Unchecking and rechecking the boxes don't seem to fix the issue for me.

I actually do like Modern Warfare. It's the first time that the multiplayer is using dedicated servers, which allows me to play with friends in the UK and AU. No more annoying "Host migration" issues. The monumental annoyance here is of another kind.

I mean, if it's a choice between mega-massive load times and constant interruptions, or cutting down asset size by cutting down the assets, and thus the visuals themselves, versus what we have now, I'll take what we have.

Don't like it at all, though.

New engine usually means a different feel to the gameplay. If they were able to keep it the same, good on them. The games always felt good.

The whole point of high quality compression is to be able to use high quality assets with a small foot print. Devs settled on 50gb because that's what BD allows. But these file sizes for updates are ridiculous because there is no limit and the burden is placed on the user with a complete disregard for things like ISP data caps and, you know, wasting the player's time. The latter seems to go hand in hand with the aforementioned regression in game design, in my opinion.

Over 210gb. That's ridiculous. I only have a tb on the x and its only got 300gb free which ain't shit these days. I don't want to buy an external, especially this late in the gen. I would have replaced the internal one if it was allowed.

Not sure if it's your issue, but it won't do it if you also have the game in suspend mode when you put it in rest. Make sure you close out the application first. Just COD tho, you can leave others up. I left FF7 in suspend last night, just turned on my system this morning, patch is already downloaded and installed.

From what I remember... According to Cerny, the ps4 problem is that as the game updates, the need to rewrite stuff increases and they did not expected that some games would be updated so many times (really dumb from them), so every time the game updates, slower it is.

Which is true, a game like Sekiro never has copying issues, while Smite, even on smaller patches, takes a lot of time.

They said that the Ps5 won't suffer from that... If they're lying... Well... We don't know. I hope they aren't.
