[DF] - Ghost of Tsushima State of Play Trailer Reaction: A Swansong for PS4?

A new gameplay reveal of Ghost of Tsushima shows developer Sucker Punch's at the peak of its powers; exploration, combat and stealth are all shown off across some beautiful landscapes. It's an entirely new direction for the team after the cityscapes of its Infamous series - but so far the promise is being lived up to.

John ( D dark10x ) and special guest Tom Morgan sit down and discuss the footage shown on Thursday

- Trailer footage was PS4 Pro
- Sucker Punch's history on PS4 have has always been technically impressive
- GoT's aesthetic a marked departure from inFAMOUS' cityscapes
- Trailer gets to show SP flexing their "foliage muscles"
- Not a lot of visible pop-in, draw distance/LOD are far enough for impressive level of immersion
- Realistic/natural lighting combined with realistic movement on blades of grass is a nice touch
- Seems to excel way beyond what Witcher 3 could do environmentally
- Trailer shows scenes full of particles and volumetric lighting, a lot going on visually in areas that even great looking inFAMOUS: Second Son couldn't deliver on, a real "density" to the air
- only downside is is John doesn't notice much interaction between Jin and the environment, water doesn't seem to kick/splash around Jin, foliage doesn't seem to move/push around his feet

(edit)
I just went back and found that portion to see if I misunderstood him the first time

timestamped link

He says he doesn't see foliage pushing and moving with Jin's feet, and then Jin doesn't cause any ripples or splashes as he is walking through water

- gameplay seems like a mix of Tenchu mixed with Far Cry
- Tom seems to find the HUD elements popping up in combat a little immersion breaking
- John really likes having to use environment to explore instead of just waypoint markers
- animations are big step up from inFAMOUS: Second Son, lot of potential there, even the physics on his cape/cloak look great, even little details like white ribbons flapping on shrines show off the work
- photo mode seems incredible, includes full animation cycles and physics you can tweak in the shot

Tsushima looks amazing and while I know what they're trying to do in regards to the wind and animals, I hope there's an option to turn on waypoints. I'm not a fan of wandering around wasting my time looking for a location when I waypoint can guide me to it. Other than that, everything looks great. Two more months to go!!

It looks like you can still track interesting locations or missions on the map so we'll have some guidance

I hope so. I personally see AC Odyssey as the perfect combination - exploration mode and guided mode along with 20 HUD options that can be turned on/off. This is what every open world game should be simply because you can then play the way you want and doing so doesn't affect anyone else but yourself.

The Game looks Fab, no question about it. Their artists have created a living picture that is beyond beautiful but saying that i really feel its going to be a game that needs to be played in that black and white mode.

I do have have some concerns but i don't think they will subtract much from the overall experience.
One thing that does sadden me is how long this game has taken to make as it probably means we will not see Sucker punch for another 5+ years unless they are working on some Dlc.

What a beautiful game and stunning visuals.. I wanted really to see more of the Story side but I’ll try it myself soon enough .

PlayStation 4 last breath In 2020 is just amazing no company out there can deliver amazing IPs and sequels like Sony that’s a fact and we are proud to have Sony in our community

I was hyped but the state of play killed it for me. Graphics are great just the gameplay and environments seem too safe and generic. AI seems dumb. It just feels like the typical open world game in samurai paint with cool foliage physics.

I want this so much to be Sony’s breath of the wild. I know that’s an unpopular opinion but the sense of discovery in that game is second to none.

expect nothing.. it’s better to go blind so you don’t hate a game because it doesn’t look like the other

I'm really sorry for the devs that release their open world games after Rdr 2. Either you do something interesting with the format ala Death Stranding or you make your open world even more impressive than Rdr 2 which is impossible. The third option is to be forgotten in the sea of genericness.

GoT is the third option i'm afraid

Most likely the game take full advantage of the ps4 pro hardware '' not just resolution and fps pump'' which is something good
i bet 1080p for ps4 pro and 900p for the base console

Nah, I play RDR2 every day and love it, and I’m still pumped for this due to the setting, music, and art design alone.

Can't say about PRO resolution because they usally use checkerboard render for archieve 4K, but base PS4 games runs at 1920x1080 with the exception of Spider-Man if I remember right.

I was very interested in Ghost, but after seeing this it's a must have for me. I just need to see what PS5 launch games are to see if I get this in July or save it for PS5 launch.

You shouldn't. RDR2 is just a stunning game, but have so much flaws on the mechanics, input latency on shoting, not to mention the excess of unnecessary realism with break the game.

And let be honest. Nothing is impossible. You guys are taking the native 4k version of RDR2 on Xbox One X as some impossible achievement.

Yes, for me it seems closer to a samurai version of RDR2 without the annoying gameplay concerns like animations taking forever etc... maybe some Witcher vibes at points.

For me, SP were always great at gameplay...so I will be happy for this to have that feeling.

Also glad when he was picking up resources it has that instant collect. I like how RDR2 has an animation to immerse you for every little thing, but it could become a chore if every game does that.

There are times where I’m collecting resources in RDR2, where I wish that it had an option for an instant collect feature. Sometimes when harvesting animals and they get stuck on the terrain a certain way, it won’t trigger the animation and you’ll instantly collect the hide and it feels like a reward in those instances 🤣

You're reaching with that one. Don't like the game, stick to Xbox threads

Reaching what?

I haven’t said anything about the quality of the game, actually I said it’s more like an Assassin’s meets Tenchu, and I love both of those games.

But to be a game like RDR2, you need to have the same insane amount of interactive NPC, the same insane amount of detail, complexity and freedom. This doesn’t seem to be the case at all. That doesn’t mean the game is bad, it’s simply not at the gargantuan scope of RDR2.

Unless R* choses for you and takes away interactivity because that not way R* wants you to play the mission. Issue with RDR2 is that Rockstar wasn't sure they want to give you story driven linear game or open world simulation.
