DF Direct: PlayStation 5 / Unreal Engine 5 Reaction - Now This Is Next-Gen!

why do you care about PR bullshit? that's the real question here.

this demo would run better on Series X, everyone knows this, so attaching a PS5 logo to it does absolutely nothing for people that actually are watching stuff like this.

do you think the general public watches tech demos and know what the hell an engine tech demo is?

There are reasons why it might and there are reasons why it might not.

I could see it running at a higher framerate and resolution but everything that's been discussed today has show those are not the only things that matter.

At least the bullshit misconception of "a faster SSD only means faster loading times" can finally die.

Do you think UC5 could be in production? Is Naughty Dog big enough to be working on two giant games at once? I hope so.

I think it is, or will be. You don't ignore over 17 million in units from UC4.

I am hoping the rumors are true that the new Sony studio they built and have yet to unveil, is working on it. I personally would love a prequel based on a younger Sully with Cutter, up until he runs into teenage Nate for the first time at the end, or end of a new trilogy.

Bring back Amy Hennig to inject that charming and fun writing again.

You should thank AMD then. Epic created an amazing tech demo - give them credit for that.

I have no idea why you’re angry. I’m still not taking shots at Sony.

I'm not angry, you are. You quoted me. Again, I said nothing to you. You quoted me. I thank who I choose to thank. I could thank the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for allowing me to get up in the morning and breathe god's holy air, but I'm not. I'm thanking Sony for providing the hardware this demo runs on. For some reason that triggered you enough to quote my post. Clearly you're more bothered by that than I am.

""Not just a little bit faster but a lot faster, so that you can bring in this geometry and display it, despite it not all fitting and memory, you know, taking advantage of next generation SSD architectures and everything else... Sony is pioneering here with the PlayStation 5 architecture. It's got a God-tier storage system which is pretty far ahead of PCs, bon(?) a high-end PC with an SSD and especially with NVMe, you get awesome performance too."

Tim is quoted
Not sure what bon means, maybe it's a typo of But? So he emphasizes the need for an nvme drive, which XSX has a very competent implementation of.

"It's just a faster SSD, so what?". Here's one smart fella saying it's pretty transformative.

(Buy or but I assume - i.e this is god-tier but you'll also get a good experience with a fast normal NVMe drive)

Some cool ideas, definitely. I'd love if they got the old UC1-3 team back but I think a bunch of them don't even work in games anymore.

Would be cool if they went further in with the vehicles on 5 as well, I quite enjoyed that stuff in 4. It seems like a logical choice to further combine the melee and gunplay but I'm not sure what the next step is. UC2 made melee great but its amazing in UC3 and 4. I just finished NDC version of UC3 earlier.

LOL. Thank you Sony? Jesus.

Everyone so quick to give Sony a pat on the back when it should be Epic getting the credit for this. You'd think this was Cerny himself showing this tech off as a 1st party technology by some of the comments in here.

Sony didn't make this tech demo. It's just running on their machine.

I always fall on my knees and pray to our lord Nvidia whenever a UE tech demo on PC is shown running on an Nvidia card!

you're acting as if that's something weird to do

🤣🤣🤣

I was just correcting your mistake, after which you seemed to be agitated.

I think the series is ripe for a reboot. Nice ending in UC4, and a “5” is a bit off-putting to new players. They should start fresh.

That looked really good, hoping for a lot more studios taking full advantage of this tech. I really loved the character design and world aesthetics!

On a side note, I'm not usually vocal about this but this console warring bs in every thread is getting beyond tiring.

May be time to take a break.

You play as Nathan's child, who is a cartographer and they call it: "Maps". You study maps and then send out squads to collect the treasure, while you just relax on the beach.

But seriously, yeah, I agree.

Glad we at least don't have to worry about narrow passageway crawls hiding asset loading to go away anytime soon :messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy: Now you can get photorealistic realtime graphics of Elle dropping you a ladder with incredible lighting!

This demo is certainly possible on Xbox Series X, but they chose to show PS5 version-and it is amazing!

versus

The Next gen reveal in-game cinematic trailors from MSFT was subpar and most titles WILL be on PS5! Bwahahahahah!!!

The Medium is a true nextgen game, because in current gen we arent able to have basically TWO different worlds at ONCE, and where you can switch between those, this is something new

Unless your description hasn’t done it justice; that isn’t at all something new. Titanfall 2 did this to great effect in the time-shift level.

People need to get over 4K. It’s a marketing driven spec for normal-consumer displays. 1440p is more than decent for typical screen sizes and viewing distances.

This is especially true when AI upscaling tech (DLSS 2.0) is looking so promising right now.

I love the fact that now teraflops are not important. Native Resolution is not important. Wonder why?

You forgot frame rate are not important.

yeap, that as well ;)

don’t get me wrong, this ue5 demo looks amazing, probably the best taste of next gen we have seen so far (definitely the most impressive), but i am a bit disappointed that this new gen barely starts and we‘ve already are discussing that sub native 4K is okay, that 30 FPS will do etc. I was hoping for fidelity and quality like in the ue5 demo but at native 4K and at at leats 60fps

Man, it’s seems like it’s quite a few people upset about this wonderfully tech demo.
I’m not the most knowledgeable about graphics, but that demo looked impressive to me. If that’s what we have to look forward to next gen, consider me hyped!

Stop trusting your eyes and let people with invested interests in you not buying the new console tell you why it's not actually as impressive as you think! What are you going to do? MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND?

Lmao! It’s almost like it’s a lot of.......damage control going on in here for some reason.
I’m not even sure why people are in their feelings. Most next gens games should look this good......to some degree...

If you’re implying I’ve lowered my standards because the first PS5 demo has those specs you are mistaken.

I will probably only buy a Series X this fall, and I really hope developers don’t waste their frame time rendering twice as many pixels for minimal benefit.

I want to see prettier frames at 1440p60.

I'm basically an idiot when it comes to the inner workings of modern graphics technologies. Consoles, computers, or anything else.

I used to be an XBox One and PS4 owner before I had to sell them both a couple of years ago because of medical bills. I am definitely planning on getting one of these new consoles, but I'll only be able to get one. I'm not biased, so it's going to be a difficult choice.

Still...if the XBox Series X is truly more powerful than the Playstation 5 ...doesnt that also mean that the XBox SX will run the Unreal 5 engine more effectively than the PS5? If so, isn't this a win for Microsoft over Sony in a way as well?

Its nuts. The damn world around her looks so incredible that the character model actually looks really bad imo. Like her pants are very shitty textures and her hair looks like some Xbox 360 era stuff.

I think her model looks ok in terms of technical quality, but her art style sticks out relative to the absurdly realistic surroundings she's in.

This really blew me away, I got excited just watching it. This could've been an episode of Mandalorian or something, that's how real it looks.

Yes. Every 3rd party game will run look better on Xbox Series X. BUT. First party games on Playstation are going to be something we've never seen before (assuming Microsoft cannot match what Sony are doing) since their SSD is so fast is can essentially feed the GPU as fast as the GPU is asking for assets. So you will have crazy short or possibly even no loading times. Like every other generation it comes down to two things. The value and the games. If you want the better value. Go with the XBox Series X and get Game Pass. If you want better games from first parties. Go with Playstation.

Tim sweeny very specifically said the ssd made this possible. The ps5's ssd is double the speed of the series x. It'll be interesting to see if a 2x ssd speed will top a 18% teraflop differential.

Considering an SSD is not displaying visuals I would bet heavily that it doesn't. It will make 1st party games do some cool as hell stuff, but the SSD is not making the GPU of the console perform above its spec.

The people showcasing it, who created it, stressed the important of PS5's SSD, which is superior to the Series X's SSD. So, no it's not an assumption I'd necessarily make.

Hey my dear :)

Multiplat games should perform better on XSX, but not by a huge margin.

First party games, however, are a different story. I'll bet Sony's 1st party titles will blow everything out of the water with this environment they created (SSD+Tempest Engine+GPU).

Considering an SSD is not displaying visuals I would bet heavily that it doesn't. It will make 1st party games do some cool as hell stuff, but the SSD is not making the GPU of the console perform above its spec.
It's not displaying them but it is pushing the textures at a speed that makes it so they don't buffer in at low res then magically transform to high resolution. A consistent world with less to no load times would be far preferable.

Anyone else not too impressed with the character model? Didn’t look any better than what we have. Probably we’ve seen better actually.

I guess it will boil down to how important the SSD speed is vs how imports the the CPU/GPU is in terms of the final rendered image.

Over 2x the storage bandwidth looks much bigger on paper than 20 percent raw CPU/GPU power but we don’t know if these two things are weighted evenly in the whole rendering process.

For all we know the XsX is more than fast enough to handle all the things this UE5 demo showcased

The SSD isn't pushing anything. It's storage. The GPU is calling assets from the SSD. The SSD is a marvel because it has everything the GPU is asking for at the ready the moment it asks for it.

Awesome- Thanks everyone! ❤

I'm still uncertain which I'll go for, as I love the GamePass offers for XsX..but this demo just blew me away. I'm very happy for PlayStation fans! :)

We cannot say 100% because Epic nor Microsoft have said as much but it is entirely likely that this tech demo is possible on the Xbox Series X. This is going to come across console fanboyish and I do not intend for that. But Epic nor Sony ever went as far as to say that the demo was only possible on Playstation. The SSD helped make it possible. But they never said that only the Playstation SSD makes it possible. There were a lot of vagaries that did nothing to shut down the possibility that this demo could also run on Xbox Series X. Today was good for Playstation because they mentioned Playstation. There is no reason to believe until we're told otherwise that everything was saw is not possible on the Series X as well. Or PC for that matter.

this demo would run better on Series X than what is shown here.

just letting you know... since... you know... they both use the same tech but one if them is just more powerful.

so this is 1440p30fps, just imagine it was around 1600p30fps and you got yourself the Series X version of this
