Some people just cant be pleased, if you dont see how this is really next gen vs current gen.

what do you expect, movie quality real life worlds rendered in real time at 8k?

It's next-gen because of the nanite technology. The lighting and textures are pretty much the same as this gen. Also, the PS5 running at 1440p/30FPS should tell you that it's still bandwidth constrained (as will the XSX). What I want to see is the nanite, 4k, ray-traced lighting and 60FPS. Something only an Ampere would probably be able to pull off - and that's a big MAYBE.

You really think Sony wasn't involved in today's showcase? Really? Or are you just asking that question to be obtuse and "Look at me, I'm different." The only person who even mentioned Xbox was Geoff, and I think he did it once, and Epic danced around it. They only talked about the PlayStation 5. Why do you think that is? Do they hate Xbox? Maybe they've never heard of it. I'll give you that one. It's possible, particularly if they're of Asian heritage.

Nanite tech will saturate VRAM instantly. I don’t see the tech demo running effectively on the highest possible PC config you can buy right now.

Looks amazing, Epic has done well in making the next UR Engine. I guess my only gripe would that it won’t be available at the start of next gen.


Very nice tech demo of actual game code running on a PS5. That's key to me. I don't know if I expect many games to approach this level of quality, but we know it's possible.

Key detail for me, though, is the full engine won't release until late in 2021. How much longer will we need to wait for next-gen games built from the ground up on UE5? Are we expecting year 3 or 4 of the next-gen to be a huge blow out?

I also wonder about this, I’m guessing most if not all games at launch fir next gen won’t be using UR5 engine. It’ll be a few years before we see this monster fully realized. Next TES would look mind blowing on this.

He said the new Nanite tech will only run on the next gen consoles, and future high end PCs when they get those SSD/memory IO speeds. Mid-range (which current high end will be), will get downscaled assets from their marketplace.
So it will be the first time that an downscaled game will look better than the native one.

I feel you're setting wildly extreme expectations which only serve to diminish the actual awesome technical innovations being made.
It's also much too early to even assume what developers can really accomplish with UE5, most developers don't even have access to the engine at the moment.

Dude, expect this. 1440p scaled up to 4K looks fucking great in my opinion and is a good rendering resolution to target when balancing visuals like this with decent (stable 30 fps) performance considering the hardware in these boxes. There was no way that native 4K/60 (or even stable 30) was going to happen while also dramatically increasing the visual assets and post processing.

Exactly. I don't understand why some people see a realtime demo or a single title running at 30fps and assume every developer will make the same design choices.
Some will likely opt for better performance over higher LOD. Games of certain genres like racing, fighting and shooting will likely be running at 60fps; and it's not unreasonable to assume some of them will be anywhere between 1440p and 4k.

And I thought Ryse looked phenomenal at 900p. This is supposed to be the 4K console generation. Why are some people already settling over a damn tech demo.

*shrug* I never expected 4K/60 to be a thing this generation, because it barely is on an i7 9700k and RTX 2080 Ti.

Not impressed at all.

I guess previous generational jumps have spoiled me. I don't see what the fuss is about.

It should be noted this demo is not just a mere graphics+(some)script, like Deep Down, The Sorcerer or The Book of the Dead. It has some code beneath the visual: character motion, physics, water, etc. Of course, the scene is very controlled by the creators, but still it is very dynamic, close to what a real game can do.

I'm very impressed by the huge amount of geometry and I wonder how they manage to put all this stuff in VRAM, it is huge for the geometry only not counting the textures.

Imagine all that geometry, almost unlimited details, millions of polygons casting shadows and GI, it's insane. Anyone who think this is an easy task should put their consoles in a closet and find another hobby.

This is also the very proof we have to rethink about raytracing. Raytracing is accurate for sure, but we probably don't need accuracy, we just need plausibility. Maybe UE5 will use some sort of RT now or in the future, but this demo clearly shows it's not a priority.

Yep! Like, a single screenshot of this would not have blown me away, since taken alone it's not *that* far ahead of some of the stuff we've seen this gen. But the global illumination and asset quality in motion with NO POP-IN at all even when moving at super fast speeds through the environment is what made this so incredibly impressive to me and indicates that we're going to see some gameplay experiences that were simply not possible in real-time on the hardware we have now.

So yes,. I'm free to thank Sony. In fact let me do it again while I'm at it, thank you, Sony. Now, furthermore, the only one triggered here is you. You quoted my post. I said nothing to you. Watching that demo and going back to watch hellblade 2 demo from last year



This actually seems in line with what they are doing visually with the UE5 tech demo.


Ninja Theory is one of the initial partners using UE5 (and I think they referred to it vaguely as "Unreal Engine ", which we just normally would assume meant UE4), so it's possible Hellblade 2 is made with UE5 and we just didn't know it?

Nope, sorry, I think I read that on a tweet that had no real source. I'm not seeing any UE5 partners announced yet. Maybe, maybe not, but my mistake.

You should thank AMD then. Epic created an amazing tech demo - give them credit for that.

And this with a big fat PS5 logo on it.
It's good PR, question is why did they choose PS5 and not PC or Xbox to show this demonstration of their new engine?

Everyone so quick to give Sony a pat on the back when it should be Epic getting the credit for this. You'd think this was Cerny himself showing this tech off as a 1st party technology by some of the comments in here.

Sony didn't make this tech demo. It's just running on their machine.
