You do realize that this is irrelevant for the media and the overall perception. People are dying to see a glimpse of next gen. And Sony delivered it with a big PS5 Logo attached.

why do you care about PR bullshit? that's the real question here.

this demo would run better on Series X, everyone knows this, so attaching a PS5 logo to it does absolutely nothing for people that actually are watching stuff like this.

do you think the general public watches tech demos and know what the hell an engine tech demo is?

LoL because this "PR bullshit" is what I do as a job and this is what makes the difference in the end. Forums like neogaf often forget that they are a very special demographic that outside in the real world only plays a minor role. It´s just reality man.

Finally some next-gen. I doubt games will look like this, but anywhere near this will do as well!
After watching this DF vid, it seems there probably will be games that look like this. This demo isnt just a demonstration of power, its a demonstration of the new techniques and features of UE5. John says they discussed this with Epic and it basically came out that you could get somehting like this looking comparable on current gen, with changing some settings.

what's so nextgen about this? still corridor and narrow af, still no ray tracing:

meh, same like this gen, but a few more polygons and better textures. that's it. not impressed at all.

What I am now curious about is if XsX has the ability to run RT for this same demo and if Epic Games deliberately downgraded their tech demo just to fall in line with PS5. I only say that because this was supposed to be a tech demo for UE5 so it would make sense to want it to shine as much as possible.

I would love to see a version of this demo running on PC with RT enabled.

yeah but people who watch tech demos are also a very small demographic... so what does this change? and again, we know this would run better, even if only by a tiny bit, on Series X, meaning it running on PS5 does nothing... it's not a new game, it's just a piece of software that looks nice and that runs on hardware that is on the level of a relatively high end PC.

and if you are not familiar with what is being conveyed in the demonstration it won't even look/seem that striking to you, because it doesn't look that much better at a glance than some of the best looking current gen games.

it is the tech details behind this demo that are the real game changers not the general look of it.

Very nice tech demo of actual game code running on a PS5. That's key to me. I don't know if I expect many games to approach this level of quality, but we know it's possible.

Key detail for me, though, is the full engine won't release until late in 2021. How much longer will we need to wait for next-gen games built from the ground up on UE5? Are we expecting year 3 or 4 of the next-gen to be a huge blow out?

And again I have to say: although most of what you write is correct, it doesn't matter. You will see this tech demo being talked and written about from every major gaming outlet in the world over the next couple of days. This is how you make headlines and create stories. They used a simple tech demo but showed at the same time how the next will look like. And that's a first. That's the story.

And on a side note: even though Microsoft insists on the fact that they created the fastest gaming console in the history of gaming, they so far struggled a lot to showcase this exact power. That's also a headline you may have seen in the last couple of days. That's the result of bad marketing. And please don´t tell me this doesn't matter. it does.

That is one of the advantages of change of paradigm from HDD to ultra high SSD speeds.

When it comes to next gen DF head to head comparisons between XsX and PS5 will draw distance and LOD Pop-in be something they can “measure” like they do resolution and frame rate? I imagine the XsX’s SSD will be capable of showing off these features too but perhaps there will be differences, maybe XsX has higher resolution, maybe PS5 has better LOD pop-in? Or no?

Draw distance and pop-in is way easier to spot then the actual retro constructed resolutions.
Framerate is even easier you just run a software on the video to catch the different frames.

So if this is running at 1440p we don’t know how hard it’s pushing the ps5 and it’s only 30fps. PS5 could be walking it or not, am interesting if the extra power of the series X could run it in higher res or a few extra bells and whistles on it. Very impressive tech demo

LOD can be tested, albeit less scientifically than res/framerate, and many of their videos display pop in distance differences. The difficulty with next gen is going to be that the differences in distance might get smaller, as both consoles push it out farther, and in the Case of UE5, there seems to be no distinct LOD switching, as instead of switching in higher quality models and textures, the model is constantly changing based on how many pixels of screen space it takes up. There's a lot of unknowns, but asset quality seems to directly scale with res, which will make higher resolutions super demanding.

So if this is running at 1440p we don’t know how hard it’s pushing the ps5 and it’s only 30fps. PS5 could be walking it or not, am interesting if the extra power of the series X could run it in higher res or a few extra bells and whistles on it. Very impressive tech demo

It was running at a dynamic res, it sounds like it spent most of it's time at 1440p, but almost certainly went under, as if it didn't they would have little reason to mention it. I don't think it dropped too much though, but there's no screens of a high enough quality to pixel count that I know of.

How quickly people forget the 60 fps in-game engine Uncharted 4 demo and what the final product ended up as, graphically. :p :p

Let's see playable games close to release. :p

I bet an Uncharted 5 will look like this. Even another Tomb Raider as well.
Do we have anything concrete about a possible Uncharted 5 coming out? ND themselves has pretty much said they're done with the series - there have been rumours about the new (as of yet unnamed, I think?) first-party studio working on a new Uncharted, but AFAIK nothing has been confirmed thus far.

(personally, I wouldn't mind UC5, but at the same time, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it not happening)

I think on XSX side you will be able to spot advantages in ray traced shadows and reflections, being rendered with higher resolution. Listen H2H are going to be a goddamn borefest and finally DF will be largely known for their tech dives and not their H2H.

Going to be some very disheartened folks in the future i can already see people deflecting and making excuses in this very thread, derailing...

Nothing concrete, but the sales of 4 are anything to go by...

Yeah, I remember those rumors as well.

I would love for them to bring Amy Hennig back and helm a prequel Uncharted in the 70's/early 80's featuring Sully and Cutter. Uncharted was never Druckmann's baby, TLoU is. So he can move on, and it can be given to someone else. An Amy Hennig and Bruce Straley reunion would be, EPIC!

It looks slick, but I'm fed up with the trickling of news. If early next-gen games look like this, nice! A noticeable bump up with some nifty improvements in visuals.

But these systems are both ostensibly launching in about 6 months.

Where are the games? I want to see a guy with at DualSense or a XsX controller in their hands playing an official title that will be available at launch or in the first month.

Maybe I have a faulty memory, but I haven't seen a next-gen launch with so little revealed at this point of the timeline. I understand Wuhan flu disrupted things and E3 this year was likely going to be a genuine battleground of next-gen news. However I can't really form a strong opinion on either system until I see games. Neither system is worth a purchase based on the info we have.

Not that I would push the PR angle like that, but I think most people realize that the closest we'll get to pushing these machines is with Sony 1st party. That'll be the first time we see real next gen imo. Running a multiplatform at 200p more resolution or a game that has to run on an XB1 is hardly exciting.

F*ck raytracing. It's the endresult that counts and this looks amazing. UE5 with its new global illumination tech may very well deliver the same results as RT, but with MUCH better performance. Nothing is baked lighting in this demo and it all comes across as very realistic / true to life.

I may be crazy here, but I'd love a next-gen Panzer Dragoon Saga remake or sequel with these levels of detail.

...are you listening, SEGA? You damn well better.

Also something not talked about enough here is the great art direction in the demo; you almost can't tell there's no RT present because the art direction with the lighting choices is just that good.

Dude, that would be perfect. Do it Sega. Do it.

Do It.

1440p, 30 fps, no RT - Bad
Photogrammetry, 8K textures, insane triangles - Good

We will see in a comercial videogame if the level match this Tech Demo. I would like to see it under Series X too.

why salt? this is unreal engine, will be the same on all nextgen consoles and pc lol
and its only 1440p/30 lol and same 30fps "cinematic" feel.

did you even see the reaction of most people? "I thought this is the new tomb raider!" lol really? so much for "nextgen".
I was promised COMPLETE NEW GAMES, that haven't been able to be delivered in currentgen due to the missing SSD.

For example:
The Medium is a true nextgen game, because in current gen we arent able to have basically TWO different worlds at ONCE, and where you can switch between those, this is something new and not the same but shinier.

this is what I was expecting, this would be true nextgen to me, now yeah, looks shinier, better dust and all, but true nextgen? not really
You are salty. Youre just bitter that this was able to run on ps5 hardware. The fact that this looks impressive scares you.

You might wanna clean your mouth later with all that shit coming out of it.

Reminds me a lot of that Final Fantasy demo that was made for GDC or something like that. It just looks incredible, and the details they discussed just made it sound even better. I have to say I was a bit disappointed when they first talked technical details about the PS5 but this, wow, this is incredible.
