I'd be interested in a short English summary, if you get the time. Sometimes, those type of arcade games relied a lot on the cabinet and overall arcade experience and don't hold up so well at home. Hopefully there is gyro-aiming, which should help it feel more arcadey.
Hum, I don't recall having gyro-aiming in the options. I will check again. But there is an emulation of the cabinet though, which was absent from Space Harrier on Switch.

Just wanted to spread the good vibes of the Sega Saturn. I've been playing mine like crazy lately. Got a new Action Replay cart and found my copy of Dungeons & Dragons Collection. I absolutely love the Saturn. Currently playing through Albert Odyssey.

My top 5 (exclusives):

Albert Odyssey
Saturn Bomberman
Panzer Dragoon Series
Deep Fear
Fighters Megamix

Here's a translation I found of the ad:

Girl 1: “Sega Shiro, is that a Switch?”
Sega Shiro: “It’s Sega!" (Game Gear – released in 1990)
Girl 2: “Are those sunglasses?”
Sega Shiro: “It’s Sega!" (Sega 3-D Glasses – released in 1987)
Girl 3: “Is that a backpack?”
Sega Shiro: “It’s Sega!" (Sega Saturn – released in 1994)
Girl 4: “What is it that you’re always wearing?”
(Enter flashback)
Segata Sanshiro: “Sega Shiro!”
Sega Shiro: “Father…”
Segata Sanshiro: “Bring it! Stronger! Master your Sega!”
Sega Shiro: “Sega! Sega! Sega! Sega!”
Segata Sanshiro: “See you.”
Segata Sanshiro blows up on rocket, leaving only his gi.
(Exit flashback)
Sega Shiro: “FATHER!!!”
Girl 4: “Look over there!”
???: “Sega is so outdated!”
Sega Shiro: "Who's that?!"
Sega Hatan Shiro: “Go bankrupt! Go bankrupt! Go bankrupt, Sega!!!” ( Sega Hatan Shiro (セガハタンシロー) is a play on “Sega Saturn” (セガサターン) and “Hatan” (ハタン), which means “Bankruptcy” in Japan.)
Sega Shiro: “Father, I will protect Sega!”

Here's the ad itself, for those who missed it earlier:

A makeshift Sega "arcade", Serbia, 1996:

I saw similar PS2 ones while travelling in Indonesia a couple of years back. You could rent the console too. In China, I came across an arcade which had a separate section with couches, Xbox X, PS4 and Switch available to rent. That one was actually a pretty upmarket place and I played Switch for a couple of hours. The big attraction there though were the Sega Rally 2 and Afterburner Climax sit down machines.

Imagine hearing this in the arcade and not playing - impossible to resist!

I still have the RetroGamer Magazine where the guy who made Crazy Taxi thought up the Concept...when in a Taxi going to SEGA HQ.

It's such an obvious idea to do that it just worked.

Personally, I find the game pretty shallow (I bought it years ago for £10) but I can see the appeal.

I think the depth lies in working out optimal routes, shortcuts, and which passengers to pick up and it what order. It was my go to "Friday night just got back from work" game for a couple of months (Gamecube version). Even now, it's great for a 15 minute blast every now and again.

I wouldn't mind seeing a new game with tuktuks in Bangkok, autorickshaws in Mumbai, Black Taxis in London, Yellow Cabs in New Yoark and maybe a motorcycle taxi in Hanoi.

Are we ever going to get another Jet Set Radio? I’ve been waiting 18 years now, god damn it.

I don't have any inside info, but with so many other IPs getting some limelight in recent years, I think we'll hear something about JSR by 2022 at the latest:

I sure hope so. I loved those games. JSRF is one of my favorite games of all time.

Replaying Sonic Adventure again after all these years. It's definitely not a good game, but if I could remake just one 3D Sonic game, it would be SA no question.

The Sega System 16 games are a surprisingly mixed bag, with only a few classics (I suppose their A Team was hard at work on the super-scalers). It's no surprise to see Shinobi and Golden Axe take the top two, and I think Alien Syndrome is a worthy third place. A lot of games I assumed were System 16 were actually System 18 (Shadow Dancer, Alien Storm etc).

While I wouldn't say there are any "hidden gems" here (the best games are already well known), the Contra clone, Bay Route, looks pretty good:

Itsuki Hoshi's art for the game is great. Graphics, particularly for games with an anime art style, have come a long way and it'd be really fascinating to see what a new Skies of Arcadia and Grandia (Game Arts) would look like. Just look at Project Sakura Wars or Guilty Gear -Strive- as examples.

The Road to 2020 is really great for them, unfortunately Corona-chan is making that goal pretty impossible.

Should I, or should I not be excited for Sonic's 30th Anniversary? His 25th didn't technically have a game (unless you count Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice), but Sonic Mania made up for the lacking Sonic Forces.

I am personally hoping for another Sonic Mania like game but with original levels and perhaps adding Amy and Blaze (she is a decent character), but honestly....for SEGA's 60s we really do need an All Stars Racing game celebrating nearly every single facet of SEGA, from Arcades, to legendary Advertisements to Cult Classics to their old American Franchises to their Subsidiary studios (I understand that they are not "SEGA" so to speak, but why not include your newly owned Studios like ATLUS/Career Soft and the Western Developers?). Go all out with it, budget be damned and advertise it as THE ultimate crossover game and put Smash Brothers Ultimate to shame. (Keep the dream alive)

Otherwise, I look forward to more SEGA games in 2020 and beyond!

Yeah, I would love to play a proper sequel to Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. I also wonder what the new 3D Sonic game will be like? Maybe something different from Generations and Forces.

Sega has had some great output in the last couple of years with Valk 4, a new HOTD, Shenmue I & II re-releases.
I'm really still holding out some hope that they'll get around to porting the Virtua Fighter games to modern consoles and PC as well, would love to be able to play that with others without having to rely on buying or hooking up 14 year old hardware.

I'm interested to see where their 60th Anniversary celebrations go, has everyone here left a message on their site for the celebration?

Did anyone ever go on the Sega ride featured at the end of this video? The graphics are great for the time, perhaps better than any movie CGI:

She wasn't the only one trying out the Mega CD:

I never know this (the Space Harrier dance from the guy in the white shirt is quite impressive too):

Yes! I believe this was at Sega World in Sydney Australia, I distinctly remember one of these 3D rides.

Checking this, that was exactly it, the AS-1! We had a variation with Michael Jackson as the captain. I believe you had to shoot down enemy ships in VR, the highest score then had to land the ship at the end of the ride, I remember getting that once, it was a lot of fun.

For more Sega World footage, I love this video;

"We can't mention his name as security is tight here" - RIP Unknown guy who worked on Sonic...I wonder if you work for Nintendo now like most of the old Sonic Team? These days I bet SEGA HQ are begging for people to look into them as everyone cares more about Nintendo and Sony now. :(

Got a laugh when she mentioned Night Trap, and the name of the show as well...oh how that game changed Rating games.

That last part really does look futuristic and almost like a PS2 game!!!!

I am still of the belief that SEGA should have tried to keep up with Nintendo in Cartridge Chip technology to have expanded their horizons on many different genres as I felt that despite the Mega Drive having a faster CPU and held its weight with a smaller ROM Cartridge size, the games were still built for Arcade gameplay in mind. The CD Add on was certainly future thinking of course, but resources should have stayed on the Mega Drive especially when NEC Technologies fugged up the Turbographx and CD Add on marketing. Hindsight is a wonderful thing sadly to always think of "What could have been", but it is really nice to think of how things could have played out for SEGA.

Watching these old videos and images really gives me nostalgia despite being very young in the 90s. (I was born in 1989 so everything would have gone over my head). I really appreciate 1990 and early 2000s culture now and how different stuff was back then. I wonder how the 40+ age group feel when they see this? They would have been in their Teens and very likely lived through this era.

SEGA were still selling Mega Drives in the UK as late as 2002 via Argos but it was mostly bundled with Sonic 3D Blast by this point, and when you think out it, the Mega Drive was being advertised over the Dreamcast! (which I think was taken out of the catalogue by 2002) The longevity surely is a hilarious and stupid hindsight on SEGA's part to abandon the best selling market that early.

Robin Williams playing a SEGA CD?!?! WHAT WOULD ZELDA THINK OF THIS! (his daughter who he named after the character, not the character itself)

More recent On-Topic:
RetroGamer has a Sakura Wars Article by the way, but it's not that big of a read sadly, but it does mention the new game which helps promote it.

There is also a small tidbit about SEGA Investors being annoyed with Sammy Shareholders in Edge's June 2003 article. Namco wanted to buy SEGA yet SEGA wanted to be the Majority holder (really SEGA? When you almost became bankrupt through years of stupidity?)

On the topic of Sega World and AS-1, I found this video that goes into good detail on the old Sega Theme Park in Sydney, you guys might like it! Brings back a lot of good memories for me! First place I ever got to play VF3!

Pretty excited as far as I am concerned. It will be 4 years in 2021 since Forces, that's plenty of time to do great things.

It is important to keep in mind the target audience for Sonic games. My feeling having played Forces and Team Racing (and I really enjoy both) is that they targeted this younger audience much better than Generations and All-Stars Racing Transformed.

Mania was fine, but I really don't want things like that. You can make a 2D game and still add some novelty to it, and modern graphics as well.

I personally loved Mania and would love to see more of it, but I also don't think that's the 'only' think that Sonic should have. I think there's room to have some old school styled sonic alongside the 3D stuff. They seem to find completely different audiences and have different goals. I think Sonic is a big enough character to support both :)

An interesting look at the evolution of controllers, with a particular focus on Sega. There is some interesting stuff from around the 10 min mark about the Saturn 3D controller and its planned upgrades (which is what that detachable cable was for). There are also some interesting earlier analogue controllers:

That Dempa controller looks like the Duke but with more buttons. It's funny that Sony would take the idea of Shoulder Buttons with two, one behind the other. Looks pretty expensive for its time and probably equal to the Elite Controller on the Xbox One you see today.

It's really interesting how SEGA went about its controllers, even if some of them were not ideal (like that Master System one with the Control Stick on the right hand).

I have never seen one, but the Master System Controller has one of those screw in mini Sticks you could attach to the main D-Pad that looks really interesting, and I wish we kind of went back to that for the Playstation/Xbox Controllers, but you cover the Hole with a small mount when not in use.

I think it's a shame that controllers have converged on a single design over the past years (well, I suppose the PS4/5 one is different with it's analogue sticks being level). I wish Nintendo had kept the Gamecube as the basis for their pro controller (especially the differently sized face buttons). I think it was a mistake for Sega to drop the 6 face buttons on the Dreamcast too.

I suppose the PCEngine. NES and Master System controllers were pretty much the same too back in the day.

You can still use the Gamecube Controller on certain Switch games (I used it for Smash Brothers, Mario Kart 8 and Bomberman last year), so it seems that Nintendo at least let you use the Gamecube controllers (at this point there are more GC Controllers in the wild than the actual console!).

I wouldn't really know if the Dreamcast needed 6 controlers, but I do know that the thing is quite uncomfortable for long periods and I wish they could have released the Twin Stick Controllers in the West for other games rather than just Virtual On.

I think that NEC Technogies did the right thing, making the PC Engine Controller into a "Turbo" controller with turbo switches, as it literally couldn't compete against the Mega Drive/SNES at that time, although the damn thing should have released in 88/89 in the US and UK (Retrogamer mentioned how the UK Gaming audience were excited for the PC Engine as early as 87/88 but NEC were colossal dicks and didn't like how the UK Representative of C&VG (who was Japanese and reported on Imported Games/consoles) pretty much spoiled the whole thing and decided to delay and eventually cancel the release).

The designs are a shame, but I think we are at that point where we can't really innovate a controller anymore than we would like to, the only thing we can do really is having custom outputs now (which Microsoft seem to be doing), but it's too expensive to do unless you are willing to pay the price. The Haptic feedback is at least something I look forward to.

I can tell you first hand (ha) that they were pretty uncomfortable to use. Probably a combination of the small hard ball and the extra force required to register inputs.

Damn, if one of the strongest Swords in Phantasy Star found it hard to register inputs, then the DC Controller is one tough Mofo to use!

I wish I had one at the time, but I guess in the UK it wasn't advertised that well, and....I guess the Pokemon craze happened at the wrong time for SEGA.

Also, a new Megadrive/Genesis game in development from the creator of Tanglewood:

I imagine it'll be a while before we see gameplay, but it's definitely one to keep an eye on. It sounds like a very ambitious concept for a 16 bit game. Those multiple sprite enemies are going to require some Treasure/Konami levels of coding magic from these devs.

The RPG library of the system is getting better and better :).

I voted Sega CS2

So it's going to be Horizon and Binary Domain in one game? That's pretty epic! Also Tanglewood was made by a Manc so I can only approve this!

Voted for the old Shinobi Team as I love Streets of Rage, Valkyria Chronicles and Puyo Puyo! Although isn't PP Sonic Team's IP?

For me, pretty much any machine with a sit down cabinet was a favourite of mine. That's an experience that isn't available today (maybe in some VR arcades). This video only includes the very early, non-scaler games though. Lots of spave invader clones, plus some surprisingly original concepts.

Hey everyone, just started posting here. Discovering this community thread has been awesome, so cool to see so many Sega fans.

Besides western localisation of Yakuza 7 release date, I'm looking every day for news on the next Sonic Game. Iizuka mentioned he wants to try something new (but honestly can't believe him), but nevertheless, excited for Sonic's next main game.

Welcome to both the forums and the Sega thread!

I'm looking forward to next year too. Hopefully we will get some kind of Christian Whitehead-led 2D Sonic game and a 3D game too. Both are interesting prospects. For the 2D game (if there is one), will they stick as closely to the 16 bit formula as Sonic mania did, or will they make more changes (as in Streets of Rage 4)? Although I like the boost 3D games, I hope they come out with something different in the 3D space. They have a good chance to build on the success of the movie, so I really hope they don't screw this up. With next year being the 30th anniversary, there is always the danger that they will release the game before it's really ready in order to meet the deadline.

Does anyone want a Sega avatar?

These are nice! Was pleased to see several Virtua Fighter ones on there.
There seems to be quite a bit spread of their IPs represented.

With IGN getting "Exclusive" news about a 13 Sentinels and Like a Dragon Footage, what are your predictions of what SEGA will announce at NG+? (I am hoping HOPING this becomes a thing every year as my favourite Japanese Developers are all together to announce things I am excited for)

I think we will get these announcements from SEGA/ATLUS, with a Vanillaware announcement on behalf of SEGA of America.

That NiGHTS Trademark we heard years ago will finally be announced.

Sonic will get another Spin Off game (no idea what), likely Mobile by Hardlight

A new Jet Set Radio game is announced to be in development

There are 4 more SEGA AGES games announced for the Switch; 1 game for Master System, 1 game from the 32X (Knuckles Chaotix or Tempo), 1 game for Dreamcastand Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder for 2020/2021.

Another Mini Console is hinted at and wish to gauge demand from fans

ATLUS USA announces that Career Soft (who made the Devil Survivor games) is currently developing a new Growlanser game.

We will get a Shin Megami Tensei HD Collection on PS4 and Switch which include 2 or more of the PS2 Era games (Digital Devil Saga Collection/Devil Summoner Collection with a possible SMT: Nocturne included)

Princess Crown is remastered for PS4 and translated into English, announced by ATLUS USA.

Decided to colour code my messages when they are related to SEGA

If even half of that happens I'll be happy.

Dotemu (who published SoR4) have hinted that they have 3 "similar" projects they are currently working on. It depends on what your definition of "similar" is (another side scrolling beat'em up or another old IP revival?), but hopefully at least one of the three involves Sega.

That's beautiful... Just missing some Virtual On: OT. Had some legendary battles with friends in that game.

Just picked up TF3 AC on my Switch. So glad that Sega is making use of Technosoft's old IP's.
