What's your opinion on the Devil May Cry series?

1(slow paced, more puzzles and atmosphere), 3 (amazing battle system), 4 (great battle system, some boring parts) and 5 (excellent battle system, some weird choices) are great.

DmC by Ninja Theory is garbage and 2 doesn't exist.

... Because in a moment of madness I just bought them all in the sale without playing a single one 🤯🤯

Devil May Cry 1-5 and the DMC reboot (?) For the price of one full game 🔥

Which one is your favourite entry? Will we ever get a Devil May Cry 6 or has the series concluded?

I did play and enjoy Bayonetta, so fingers crossed I like these.

From the main line, 3 and 5 are my favorite ones tbh. Everything else it's kinda janky in some way or another, but great games when they came out (except 2).
3 it's like when everything came together in one game, kinda like MGS3 but for this franchise.
5 it's like finally getting a complete sequel quality wise to 3, the plot is way more disjointed but enjoyable with a few very high highs and the combat it's better than ever before.

Comparing it to Bayonetta it's kinda of a hard sell. I really love Bayo 1 and not so much 2, what really separate both franchises it's the combo system. In Bayo, P* found a way to make the game more approachable for beginners making the combo system really easy to get into, lots of dial up combos, meaning you just press buttons and they just chain.
In DMC instead, there is not much in the way of dial up combos and you have to learn how to chain them most of the time, but thats the beauty of it.
What you have to learn to do basic combos in DMC it's what you need at mid level play in Bayo, so the curve it's steeper.

1 its a piece of history.
2 doesn't exist.
The reboot i want to just forget it existed because it's like a popcorn movie forgetting it's a popcorn movie and pretending to be high cinema while being a soap opera. Just cringe from start to finish, the whole atmosphere of this game makes me wan to cringe out of existence, this is the game that has gotten more reworks since it's release, and Capcom started even before it's release.

Get MOTIVATED with this combo video (mild gameplay and story spoilers for 5)

It's just a genre that's never clicked with me. Tried a few of the early DMC games, Bayonetta 1 and 2, Ninja Gaiden (Black I think) and just can't get into them. Just not my type of combat with all the combos, moves and weapons and having to learn what to use for which enemies, to much precise timing and pattern memorization required.

As someone that mostly wants to relax while gaming, the genre is just not a fit for my tastes. Unfortunate as there's some solid characters and stories in some of these games.

Original DMC was epic and one of the best titles of that year. Second one was pretty good too. After that, played one, played em all. I tried the demo of part 5 and thought it was trash.

What time is it?
Dante is an amazing character. I've only ever finished the original and five. I don't love the pace of movement in the series. Games like Ninja Gaiden and Bayonetta feel like they have faster locomotion which makes them feel more fluid. I"m pretty terrible at this style of game in general so take this with a grain of salt, but DMC's combat is probably my least favorite of the stylish action genre.

I enjoy the series, particularly the first game. Though despite all the additions it does kinda feel samey and a little played out at this point.

Started off amazing then got bland , when the first one came out it was a game changer, second was great and the third and I think it went downhill from there. There are not bad just other games like bayonetta came out and were better.

Devil May Cry 1 was one of the biggest mind blows I had in a game ever.

I rented a PS2 at the time to play MGS2. My idea was to play and finish it at the weekend so I didn't even care about the other games I pick along with it. But since they were there, out of curiosity, I decided to play DMC before starting my MGS2 playthrough. Dude......I could not believe how good the game worked in 3D. For the first time ever I felt a 3D brawler (Beat em up/hack and slash) worked in a 3D space.

Never a 3D brawler had so much precision! Even the special attacks were precise! The 3D space was used masterfully to give a boost to the exploration. The genre abandoned their arcade roots to give a experience more in line with consoles. No more linear levels, one life, itens which rewards exploration, no Dante falling from the sky when you lose a life. All of this is a given these days but at the time it was revolutionary.

I could not finish MGS2 at that weekend. Almost finished DMC instead!

My favorites are DMC3 and DMCV. And obviously, DMC1 is very dear to me, even if it is very raw comparing to the others.

I love the series. Dynasty Warriors was always a cool concept 1v100+ enemies. Dante has a sword and two guns. The first time I played DMC was a demo at Babbages. I instantly pre-ordered it and got it the day it came out. Where else could you juggle enemies in the air and keep them in the air with bullets?

I skipped 2. I heard it was trash and the additional character wasn’t that appealing. I got back into it with DMC3. That came out around the time God of War came out. DMC3:SE was like a rejuvenation of the genre. This is after Ninja Gaiden made a huge impact on the genre. DMC3SE was on top of the list of best action games.

I had 4 on launch and enjoyed it. The combos and bosses were good in 4. The grab mechanic was fun. I owned the SE of that too and really enjoyed playing as Vergil. The OST to 1,3 and 4 were excellent too. 5 is also very good. The combat is excellent in 5. Ive been a big fan. I’ve owned them on PS2-4 and PC. I never enjoyed playing DMC2. I’ve started it numerous times and I hate the camera. I really dislike the level design. I don’t ever plan on finishing DMC2.

I’ve been a long time fan. I enjoyed DmC because the combat was good. I played it on PS3 and the DE on PS4. I have the Switch version of 3SE. The series comes and goes. It’s great if you haven’t played it before or if you’re returning to it.

I've just got to the Sewer level (after the big black Knight battle).

I am enjoying it. There is alot you have to teach yourself though, which feels strange in this modern climate. Apart from when I want mobility is it best to keep R1 pressed all the time during combat encounters?

I find those black cats hard to beat reliably. I didn't go for easy mode when It offered it to me on at the end of chapter 2, I hope that was the right call 😂.

No, but most of the time.

With R1 you get more precision and it opens a lot of moves. The cons is you lose some of the visibility and mobility. Many times, when I need to reajust my position, I release the R1.

And yeah, the panther, Shadow, is the most tricky common enemy in DMC1 IMO too. But a cool ally in DMC5!

I find the gameplay to be infinitely boring and repetitive.

Love everything else about it: Weird story, insane character designs, awesome weapons, unique enemies, over the top action.

I really wish I'd enjoy Japanese games.

I think only the first one is a legit great game, the rest(3~5, never played 2) are a bunch of masturbatory combat engines with a highlight here and there, with 5 being the main worst offender. Beat first one and go play better games in the genre like Ninja Gaiden and Metal Gear Rising.

I loved the first one back in the day, great music that really adds to the atmosphere. I did not get into any others beyond that aside from trying them out.

Go Go Neo Rangers!
Best action game in the business. DMC2 is the only one that's a bad game.

Dmc3 was the pinnacle of action games for a long time.

DMC4 has its issues but it's the game that grabbed from a combat stance and really made me appreciate the genre. I always really liked them but 4 was the game that made me actually get good and go back and play the other games on Hard.

DMC5 is phenomenal but V definitely was not a great addition. Nero finally has some real depth like Dante with the devil arms and Dante once again is so smooth and amazing to play as.

Bayonetta comes close with it's combo depth but the witch time mechanic to me never quite clicked. It's still a lot of fun to play but DMC never was surpassed by it.

DmC is a decent action game but a horrible DMC game. There's some fun stuff in there and I really enjoy their sound design more than Capcoms until DMC5.

Well I've just beat that massive bird, so getting quite far.

I'm either getting alot better or my character is getting stronger. The grenade launcher really helps. I think the only think I think is bad about it from a modern lense is the tutorials... or lack of them. Like it never even explained how to dodge or change fighting styles when I just unlocked the flame fists... How is the end user meant to know to press R3 to cycle between them!

But that's just a small niggle.

Oh and one other thing I bought them all in the sale with 5 minutes to go and despite the checkout saying the correct price they took out the full price for every game. Good news is I'm getting the difference refunded.. so Sony are getting better lol.

I've never seen so many people say they hate a single entry in a franchise more than number 2! I don't know if I can skip it entirely without trying it though 😛

Both 3 and 5 are two of my favorite games of all time. Can't recommend them enough. Although the first play through of either doesn't quite do them justice. They really shine when you dig into the combat mechanics and start making your way through the harder difficulties with most of your tool kit available. If you just mash your way through the game on normal you're not getting the full experience. You gotta learn to style on your foes. Smokin' Sexy Style.

It's a top 5 franchise. Maybe even my favorite apart from Final Fantasy. DMC 2 is... lackluster. But the rest are fan fucking tastic. That includes the reboot. Dont listen to the haters. Shit fucking metal.

Ah Hostile_17, good avatar!

Just got off the Ghost ship. I was getting my arse kicked when I first met the Spider and the Panther enemies now I'm beating everyone.

Feels like a proper RPG where the hardest part is definitely the beginning! Only playing on Normal difficulty however.

Never been great at the series but I think it's a cool franchise. The PS2 games were too hard for me when I last attempted but that was years ago. Never really got into the PS3 versions nor the newest one because I want to beat the older ones first. Perpetually shelved...

For me at least the first like 2 hours are the worst because it's so hard and it's a bit of an adjustment to learn the skills. Then you upgrade your character and know what everything does and it gets alot easier/more enjoyable. I liked it before, loving It now. It's very addictive once you get going collectiong orbs/searching for secrets.

I'm the same thought playing them in order because I don't want to miss anything.

I've only recently gotten better at "character action" games. What you described has been my experiences in other similar titles, you nailed it! I'm fond of those rare games which have a high skill ceiling yet also have a wide variety of ways to reach that ceiling (I think DMC qualifies for that description).

I'll revisit the DMC games someday. I'm sure I'll enjoy them much more after getting better at the genre overall. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I wouldn't have thought there would be much collecting or exploring the game for secrets, but hearing that only makes me more eager to try it out (again) and overcome those earlier sections. Similar to Wonderful 101, I get the impression the DMC games don't truly "start" until you've played through once and learned the combat. I'm okay with that, but it makes the prospect of going through the whole series a bit more daunting. :lollipop_flores:

That is true, I think the new games I might be inclined to play them multiple times etc but the good thing about this genre is at least a single play through isn't a 100 hour epic. It's easy to just pick up and have fun 😁

I think it's a terrible, repetitive, mindless action game that kickstarted a bad genre. The way the music changes every time there's a fight (which is nearly always) is also a terrible thing that was used by so many games since.

One of the best franchises out there.
Any game trying to have good combat whether long or short-range usually has a lot they could learn from studying DMC and Platinums games.

I would agree with you if Devil May Cry 1 didn't exist, but it's nothing like you're describing. Also Ninja Gaiden Black, the best game in the genre, is easily one of the best games of all time, period, so it can't be a bad genre.

I thought DMC 5 was awful. The graphics are great but the level design sucks, repetitive and dull world and stages. Also, it needs to reinvent the formula of walking, close barrier, defeat enemies, and so forth which is so Playstation 2

Doom and Doom Eternal do that a lot, making battle arenas. Presumably so you can't just run through a level.

Only played DMC5. One of the very few big games that I never bothered to finish lately. I wish I could see what people like about it, but I thought it was annoying game with an outdated and boring gameplay.

First one's still the best b/c it's the only one where you actually feel like your hitting things with violent force. All the other ones it just feels like you're giving everything a pat on the back with your sword or w/e else you have equipped. Also better b/c no stupid generic anime shit. Dat vibration too, man...

I am loving the first one like after a somewhat rough/hard opening few hours. Just got up to the first giant slime fight. I've maxed out my electric sword attacks 👍

Ninja Gaiden 1/Black is wonderful. It’s quiet, methodical, full of platforming, exploration, and the music doesn’t change every 8 seconds. Plus Ryu feels lethal because you can one-shot a wide variety of enemies.

Most of the genre gets all of the above wrong.
