The thing is, MS had many believing all sorts of things when they were 40% below the PS4... now that they have an advantage on the specs most people look at (even for CPU frequency, people put the 8 cores freq against the 8c/16t speed in many charts)... MS has a machine definitely tuned to enhance the existing games as much as possible - which is great - but Sony has a game changer in many ways in their hands, it's hard to know how things will pan out in the end.

So yeah, MS kept yapping while they had the weaker/more expensive hardware, and when they had no significant exclusives for the whole generation, they yapped more at every shows, made sure everybody liked them with a couple of platform level features (limited, but improved BC, the 180s, even their weak exclusives).... So now that they have studios, a console that is in many ways more powerful than the competition at the beginning of a generation, I can't see MS shut up about it any time soon, especially with their console being so focused on improving games made for the current generation, cross gen games are bound to run slightly better on it -assuming they max out the PS5 at all, the GPUs are within 20% of one another + Sony has tons of actually custom technology.

So it's hard not to blame Playstation's new boss for the mis communication, if the hardware in the PS5 has some hidden benefits show them off and fast....
But the general consensus is that these things are both extremely powerful and both very similar in a lot of ways and both do different things in really cool ways. These are both extremely impressive pieces of technology. But because of the way Sony has actually presented this thing and marketed this thing, now the narrative is 'The Xbox is way more powerful than the PlayStation,' and I think that is such a -- maybe fatal flaw on Sony's part for this console generation. Maybe it'll all be forgotten if the PS5 comes in cheaper, or it has a killer launch lineup, and maybe none of this will matter in November. Or maybe these consoles won't even be able to come out in November. But right now, it's such a dropping the ball after so many years of smart decisions on Sony's part.
(y) Sony needs to hire proper marketing and communications people, Cerny is a great system architect, but he is not one to build a hype train on. Not that I like Mr. Spencer either, but I get why some flock to him more.

GAF will take quite some time before realizing this.

The Teraflops marketing strategy from Xbox is masterful. Even I fell for it until yesterday morning when I saw Mark Cerny in the front row explaining to me about the tech behind the PS5.

Xbox fans on GAF are going to have a rude awakening come this holiday season when Digital Foundry really compares both systems neutrally and not some hack on GAF thinking that they know console architecture better than Cerny.
Chasing one pipedream after the next eh?

I don't get people here on GAF right now. It's so embarassing. I feel like people posting threads about how the PS5 might be better than the XBox due to the SSD primarily have to be 14 years old, right between beind a child and trying to find their own place in the world, hence console warring.
I get supporting your favorite thing, but what's happening here is just embarassing for any outsider looking in. I have no horse in this race, I just sold my PS4 a couple days ago because most games I'm interested in end up coming to PC anyways, and I never had an XBox. I'm also a dev and have a pretty good PC. I don't know much about hardware architecture in its entirety because I don't need to, but I know way more about actual game dev than most of you. Being misinformed or getting things wrong isn't what irks me at the time, it's the sheer willful ignorance. Why are so many here eager to prove themselves fools by acting as if they knew anything about everything because they watched some YouTube video, and then ignore valid points or misrepresent them? How can anyone have such an ego, as a grown adult none the less? No practical experience, no professional education, but at least you read some Tweets and watched some videos that make up for it!

First Teraflops are everything, now Teraflops don't matter because some noteable people said that SSDs are great. Cool. 99% of you don't know jack shit how game dev works, and that's fine, but please don't act as if you did. NVMe M2 SSDs have existed for PCs for years and while it is true that a closed system will be more efficient overall and they are doing intruiging things with their hardware, acting as if some SSD will revolutionize gaming as you know it is laughable and any PC gamer that owns a good PC will tell you that. I've seen posts here arguing that SSDs will somehow enable new levels of physics and mechanics.. it won't.
It will primarily make devs not care as much about loading optimization/compression. That's the gist of it. It's important, console peasants are going to be happy and that's what matters.

It's just a piece of tech, when it comes to game performance the XBox just performs better overall. That doesn't mean the PS5 will suck or doesn't have some advantages. It's just how the RTX 2080 Super is a bit better than the RTX 2080. You get a couple more frames per second, a couple more particles, a couple more pixels and that is it. You don't hear people arguing here, trying to spin the fact that the RTX 2080 consumes less energy as meaning that it will be stronger than the Super variant because less TDP means you might be able to OC more.

Invest in ideas, in ideals, in commitments and skills. Don't invest in PR talk and a bit of plastic and metal.
Play your games, if you want to, inform yourselves as much as is adequate, be willing to learn and otherwise just shut up.
PS5 will be great, XBox will be great. Games are, to your standards, also going to be great.

Thanks.

EDIT:
It's funny how Schreier says "all those people don't know about hardware" (with which I agree) and then proceeds to say that HW specs amount to nothing unless tested. HW specs are HW specs. It's physics. Just complex ones. Us not understanding all the complex interactions and therefore getting things wrong (which testing might show) doesn't mean specs become invalid.

Why does a journalist care if a corporation is conveying its message correctly ? Why does he seem angry because he thinks that a corporation is doing a bad pr job and why is he trying to help that corporation ?

Because he is literally a fanboy. I listen to his podcast, well I used to listen to it a lot more than I do now, he made a pretty extensive hobby out of downplaying anything Microsoft did in the beginning of the generation when they were trying to turn things around. It was only until like GamePass that he finally started not being a total twat about it and probably because the masses had spoken and believed GamePass was a great thing.

The thing is, MS had many believing all sorts of things when they were 40% below the PS4... now that they have an advantage on the specs most people look at (even for CPU frequency, people put the 8 cores freq against the 8c/16t speed in many charts)... Hidden benefits, eh? Remember when Xbox One had hidden benefits to make up for its faults? I think they were called “Move Engines”. The only time a company has to get as technical as Sony did is typically because they have the weaker hardware.

Hendrick's

If only my penis was as big as my GamerScore!
Damage control on steroids. If there were "all these revolutionary things behind the scenes" why wouldn't they have talked about them?

At the end of the day, it's a weaker system with a faster SSD that may or may not make much of an impact.

Herr Edgy Herr Edgy , its not all about the teraflops is what i was suggesting :p

You are right, it isn't. But there is a lot of vague speak in there that frankly just gives the impression of there being something that a lot of people and that includes you I believe, just eat up to retroactively justify their feelings towards some piece of tech. "I want PS5 to be better, therefore I'm going to take the fact that its SSD is faster and some PR talk as an argument that it will enable devs to do super very special things that XBox can't do!" - that's just not how it works and that's what I was suggesting with my post.

With no VRS or machine learning - absolutely not. Leadbetter thinks PS5 is not full RDNA2.

You speak as though either of these things has been confirmed by anybody. RDNA2 has VRS tech built-in, but "VRS" is a trademark of MS. PS5 has it and machine learning. All you have to do is wait for confirmation either way. No point in spreading something that has no basis in reality.

I understand and fair enough, the SSD being used to dismiss the higher teraflops is not the best strategy to use when it comes to comparing the consoles.

I would even suggest that Mark Cerny didn't even reveal the entire console's features yet, but I don't expect them to top the 12 TF that Xbox achieved. I just think that Teraflops shouldn't be considered the only crucial factor when it comes to delivering a next-gen experience. Teraflops are important for games to achieve 4K60FPS, but what I believe consoles do compared to PC gaming setups is quite different since they have their own dedicated OS, per say.

I'm never going to claim i'm a developer, but i've informed myself lately about what makes console manufacturing difference from say, building a Gaming PC. What Cerny achieved with the PS5 architecture is phenomenal based on what developers are saying and I believe focusing on just teraflops dismisses this significant fact.

PC games have never been developed with an SSD in mind until Star Citizen came along, and having such a fast pool of memory to dip into has absolutely created a paradigm shift in how games are developed.

There's a reason devs are stoked to be working with SSD's by default and using existing PC games that were never developed with that in mind is a bad comparison.

A lot of damage control from these Tweets. I mean how much faster is Sony's SSD solution over XSX's? I think the fact that both have SSDs is the main attention grabber here. Some of these comments are misleading in that they focus so much on the PS5 SSD system without mentioning XSX's SSD system as if it's going to have some massive advantage over the XSX or PC. I don't see it.

All I heard through my sources is the SSD is really fast on the PS5 but the XSX is the more powerful system and these comments were made by one of the biggest leading exclusive developers for Sony. Let's call a cat a cat and a dog a dog.

Will the 2TF be enough to push games further on the XSX than the PS5? I have no idea until we get some multiplat games to compare.

In sheer power, XSX has an advantage. Nobody is denying that. LOL But........

Maybe you should listen this man. Pretty sure you remember NXG?

If you're looking for an unbiased video of the PS5, NXGamer is not the way to go. Strangely enough his comparisons always seem to focus on games where Sony has the advantage, I wonder why :pie_thinking: Then the very first time rumors of 9.2 vs 12 TF were leaked, the same day a video goes up on "Why Teraflops don't matter" Coincidence??? Do you think if the rumor was that the PS5 was 13TF that video would have been published? absolutely not, then there would be no need to come to the defense of Sony.

Thelastword loves this guy for good reason.

the GPU definitely is more powerful (~20%) and the CPU if you run all threads is pretty much equal... but the series x does have more memory bandwidth as well... So the system actually has slightly more raw power, but given the fixed target (4K/60 TVs) I would not expect the differences to be clear (heck many claim they could not see the difference between 720/900p and 1080p... how will they differentiate native 4k against native 4k with resolution drops to ~1800p - in action heavy scenes? or the missing particle here and there (I'm really talking about a small amount of particles, of any)? because this is what that kind of difference in GPU power means... with the twice as fast SSD and the ability to pull assets out of storage in real time really fast you could get games with extremely dense scenes in games where that was unthinkable before, on a way that an SSD that goes half the speed won't be able to match... so it will also affect graphics in some way, and in some games... games depend on different things at different times when they run.

So assuming that everything goes in Sony's direction (which is not guaranteed at all).
- The PS5 should be cheaper
- There could be benefits to its architecture that make this machine better in some situation (it doesn't sacrifice 1 core + 1 thread to OS background tasks, much faster SSD, etc.) and the series x better in GPU intensive scenarios.
- How much people care for the improved BC could plain in favor of MS... I think they should have focused more on the future than on the past - they also designed the one this way, they profiled existing 360 games, saw how they used shaders, etc. and said we want a machine that runs those games better, no apparent thinking of how the tech would be used a couple of years down the line.
- I don't think (real) 120hz 4k TVs will be common for a very long time, but I would love to have one some day.

Again, this is something I think about, and I'm trying to have a full picture of.

As for the SSD, let's say you can pull in 8GB of data per second and you use that to unload as much data off of memory when things are not on screen... in a given scene you can unload/reload twice as much as on a disk that is half the speed, so you either have faster moving characters/vehicles, or you can turn the camera around twice as fast or make it more detailed on the system that has the faster SSD (bigger or more varied textures)... there are pretty big and tangible benefits to a drive that fast.

It's not simple to say that the series x will always have an advantage.... that really fast SSD may mean that games have to keep a lot less in active RAM as a given time, essentially allowing for more details than a system with the same amount of memory.

You don't sound all that unbiased yourself, chief.

So you are upset that some people have been telling us about this and pointing out that the TF difference may not be as big as some wants us to believe it is? ... it's not like most PC gamers had cards this fast, let alone with ray tracing that they actually use (even the series x struggle to run minecraft with path-tracing at 1080p).

Obviously this is no coincidence, that whole teraflop thing has been in the air for a while, we need to have context for it... there is always a chance that the difference is actually bigger than expected, so we shall see how it turns out, I wish you best of luck.

HAHAHAHAHAHA NOW SCHREIER IS RELEVANT HERE?! HAHAHAHAHAHAH

He's a POS who blocks anyone who disagrees with him, he's a ponce who is a flaming progressive and the usual hypocrisy one expects from a "game journalist"

all that being said though, he clearly does have connections as is simply proven by the fact that his name always comes up and his so-called Scoops are often correct

I hate the douche nozzle with a bloodthirsty passion but he might be right here time will tell

?? Not saying everyone on GAF doesn't know their elbow from their knee, but some of the shit that's been spouted from some, and not even in jest has been ridiculous.

I have NEVER liked JS, but what he is saying is being supported by practically everyone - devs, DF, NXGamer, etc., then you have people on here comparing this to a PS4 vs. Xbone situation. I would rather take the side of the journalists, reporters and people who actually put their reputation on line to bring us information.
