Next-Gen PS5 & XSX |OT| Console tEch threaD

"Who needs protein when you've got plastic? 🤷‍♂️ "

Of course, it is a cock up.

Efficiency is the mantra/bedrock for consoles, PS5 has thrown it for a toss to chase more performance. I need hands-on preview for this thing, need to know how hot and loud it runs.

Different design goals, SSD was a big deal for Sony, GPU for MS.

CU count stayed the same because imo, PS5 was supposed to come out in Holiday 2019. It would be a ~8TF console, but internally things were delayed and they had to launch simultaneously with Xbox. With not enough time to re-design the APU, they boosted the clocks to the absolute threshold. This PS5 seems a frankenstein version of an SKU between 2019 and 2020 lol

Let's reserve judgment on AMD RT, we don't know how big a factor CU count will play, or how much of dis-advantage can be offset by higher clocks.

NGL it kinda gives me some SEGA Saturn vibes, for folks who know what happened with that system's development (pressured by Sony no less).

But overall I think it'll fare a lot better in terms of market performance, it is PS after all. If things get rough they can take time to course-correct as they already did that with PS3. I can't imagine the current early reactions being too sobering for Sony rn tho and don't even want to THINK about the idiots on Twitter having a go at things :S

Price is the only thing that can make the PS5 worth it in comparison.

It must be cheaper. No if no buts no excuses.

Recheck the specs and you will know it is. The only thing with higher cost is the cooling solution and the SSD along with its custom controller.

Sony really needs to clarify this statement. I thought it was clear as day, but people are confused...
Lastly, we’re excited to confirm that the backwards compatibility features are working well. We recently took a look at the top 100 PS4 titles as ranked by play time, and we’re expecting almost all of them to be playable at launch on PS5. With more than 4000 games published on PS4, we will continue the testing process and expand backwards compatibility coverage over time.

Also I've been wondering if they mentioned about third-party drives being installed in the same port/bay as the internal drive or if those connect through a different port? Asking because dunno if Cerny mentioned it or not. Also asking because I've been thinking about XSX's storage and MS made it seem like the expansion card can be inserted while the internal drive sits on the drive simultaneously..

Pretty sure it was in addition to internal. The idea that it supports third party ones - of a good enough spec - is a nice surprise.

unless PS5 is 399 and xbox sx is 599, they went cheap, instead of pushing the envelope, they went cheap after all that talk that it is a premium console. sony always pushed the boundaries and now? cheap.
PS4 PRO says hello. PS5 basically followed the exact same ethos as the PRO did.
They made shit work with a retail price that was set in stone.

Why can't Sony reveal what the console will look like?
Microsoft revealed it in December 2019 plus they teased game footage, plus a full spec release way before Sony.
Sony has given us a logo and a snooze fest when they know fans/consumers want so much more. Today's presentation would have been forgivable if they started on the right foot. Maybe this was a GDC presentation...but considering everything that's going...they could've done better. Much better.

Lets be honest, console power/specs aside,....Microsoft wins right now in communication, consumer friendliness and overall transparency.
They're treating consumers the right way.

Sony is doing the complete opposite.

What a 180 over last gen's reveals.

It looks like ps5 will consume more power, be hotter, and be noisier than xsx while having less power. If it was just a case of less power while consuming less energy and making less heat and being quieter, that would be fine. But it isnt.

i dont know how anyone can look at this and not see it as a cock up.

You know … when you say it like that … it really does sound like a clusterfuck.

I thought that Cerny asked for better cooling because he wanted the PS5 to be whisper quiet … but now I'm starting to think it's done in order to prevent the console from exploding once you turn it on.

*sigh* I do NOT want another vacuum cleaner situation. Really conflicted right now.

SX for November? If there’s a date, maybe pre-orders will be up sooner than I thought. Once price is revealed, I can see that happening, but price is going to be the trump card now. If the ps5 is the same price as the SX, or even only a £50 cheaper, I can see some puzzles looks appearing.

Because every small piece of PS5 news was catching a lot of attention and Sony advertised this talk on their social media. Most people tuning in were not developers and Sony shouldn't have expected otherwise.

Even though some people (like me) enjoyed the presentation, a large chunk of the audience expected a grand reveal.

This was a really bad move on Sony's part.
They released the vid on the official PS Blog. Enough said?
Because the entire gaming world is starved for PS5 info and this is the first info to come out.

Horribly managed PR from Sony.
They were probably forced to do it anyway, developers' knowledge of the system is a priority, more than a possible backslash for a weaker GPU, it's in their interest to inform developers about PS5's features and "special skills". And Mark went on and on about those "Magics", I really felt the presentation was mostly to inform coders about those. Anyway, the VG crowd, here on GAF and other specialized sites, are not the mainstream crowd. Most of the people will just hear "Did you hear about the new PS5 ? It has a super fast SSD and "Magic 3D audio".

nothing to clarify. its as clear as it gets.

the only people who dont see it clearly are people in denial. i dont blame them. its a shocking to see them muck up PS4 BC after switching to x86 architecture last gen for this one reason alone.

its like a child designed this console.

Digital foundry said in their video it’s 14 threads at 3.8 or 16 at 3.6. I trust them being correct on the console they were given the exclusive reveal of.

They said at 3.8 GHz, 2 threads are reserved for the OS. While at 3.6 w/ SMT, all cores and threads can be used.

SMT is either off or on, one core is reserved for the OS regardless.

Last gen they showed their console at e3

PS5 was supposedly delayed due to BC. Only 100 BC titles at launch is disastrous.
Shawn Layden was most likely fired for this.

I would say that personally, the BC situation is the worst thing to come out of all this. They appears to be going the Xbox way of emulation, no? In which case yeah, you can’t just bulk throw every game at the system and have it work in higher res. There’s a reason Ms went the way they did.

The 2080 Ti keeps its 4352 shaders fed and is the epitome of wide and slow vs narrow and fast when you compare it to the 2080Super and the 2080Ti at 4k is about 20% faster than the Super.

As far as ROPs go they will benefit from high clockspeeds but the Xbox One Series X has more of them just like it has more shaders and more RT units and well, just more of everything apart from heat and noise because unless RDNA2 is a miracle architecture with desktop cards clocking at 2.5Ghz + the PS5 is going to be running much higher up the voltage frequency curve which means a lot lot more power used.

So you're telling me, that if you were to do some combination of overclocking the 2080Super and underclocking the 2080Ti such that they both have the same total theoretical TFLOPS, and you bring them to the same memory bandwidth, the 2080Ti will be 20% faster than the 2080Super? Not buying it. The 2080Super would be the same and faster in some workloads that don't scale well.

Real funny seeing all these “insiders” go silent now when they were hot shit just mere hours ago 😂

I dont get why people keep saying this I have seen every one of them post since the reveal.

This thread has exploded you want them all just sitting here reading every single message?

Heck I have been around a lot today and I am just skimming through the pages and I am retired with tons of free time.

Some people want drama and some sort of defensiveness.
On the contrary, I'm completely intrigued as to what Cerny has cooked up here.

Im suffering from corona “symptoms” (I have to say that as there’s no tests available) ate tea then put my kid to bed. Some people have lives, it’s a shocker.

How can I put this... The uk just had a bomb shell 2 hours ago of ALL schools closing on Monday. So you can imagine that right now, my wife and I (who are teachers) are a little bit pre-occupied with what we are going to do with our 3.5 year old locked in a house for four weeks 🤣

Never thought I'd see the day someone draw a parallel to a hardware put out by Sony to Sega Saturn, but I see where you're coming from. Compared to PS3 (which was completely guided by their own choices), PS5 seems to be a compromise between the two. You look at so many shakeups at SIE over the last 2-3 years and have to wonder how much of an impact that had on development. I still think they'll be fine, they have a stupidly strong pool of IPs and a very large global following.

Things are looking bright for MS though, they will never get a better chance to eat into their market share, the opportunity is ripe with Lockhart, let's see if they actually make the call to launch 2SKUs simultaneously.

I'm very excited for both Sonys and MS game event now that spec-wankery is done with.

You're not supposed to put out a well thought out informed post.
Maybe try a knee jerk approach like quite a few have done today?

We are all enthusiasts and is obvious now that in order to meet the infamous 399 price tag they went cheap on the GPU (I bet it is considerable cheaper than the one find in the SEX) and clocked it higher as possible. This kind of compromises taste bad for enthusiasts that like the best possible and are willing to pay for that..

In comparative SEX looks like a much more robust all around beefier and premium machine.. sure I think it will cost more but I can see the scenario we’re they go all out and take a loss to match Sony.. if they do that Sony will have a hard time... and even if MS doesn’t go this road they may have Lockhart to sandwich PS5...

Interesting times ahead..

I don’t personally see how this isn’t a complete disaster for Sony.

No VRS.

256bit bus.

448GB/s bandwidth.

36CU.

Up to 2.23 GHz.

Compared the series x this is like mid vs high end device. The image quality and FPS at higher resolutions will be noticeably worse.

The only saving grace will be if the PS5 comes in at a much lower price but with the costly custom SSD I don’t see that happening.
