If AMD did anything like that, they would destroy their relationship with Sony. No company should depend on just one large customer....

But continue to fantasise.

I dont think this is likely just like Navi being exclusive to Sony isn't likely but if AMD were to do something like this I think Microsoft would be a prime candidate. Why? MS has the patents in the PC space, resources and leverage with DirectX to help them compete with their main competitors Nvidia and Intel. If MS helped them develop their Ray Tracing solution in addition other features due to MS's R&D I could absolutely see MS saying hey this has to be exclusive to us in the console space but feel free to use it in your PC GPUs. Despite what you may think AMD doesn't really make that much from these console contracts. Sony couldn't get mad knowing these are essentially MS developed technologies. Just like PlayStation's potentially custom form of Ray Tracing. It is what it is.

Likely both have semi custom technologies exclusive to each other in the console space but not PC, you are essentially describing what Sony did with AMD for PS4 on async compute.

Beyond that kind of intervention, it all becomes just reliant on a bit of a dream one could have looking at the size of MS as a whole and thinking they‘d throw the entire might of the corporation behind the Xbox business which is where things are a bit more far fetched especially since this rumour talks about VRS and DXR Raytracing (big tent pole features of RDNA2) which nVIDIA already has and has codeveloped with MS in the PC space (DXR RT in particular). Sony may be smaller than MS, but for them PlayStation is more of a key business they want to hold and expand and while I will not take MS’s software expertise away from them as a big plus, Sony has been involved in deep HW design of CPU and GPU HW and console graphics API and tooling for 25+ years and has a LOT of highly skilled developers and graphics experts as well (see ICE team or their ATG group in EU).

I'm very confused, didn't AMD confirmed it on both next-gen systems?
Not really. It was a quote that was taken out of context, or scrambled around with by a random blog. Also in that quote it doesn't even say RDNA2 for PS5, it only says Hardware Raytracing for PS5. We'll now soon enough. Personally I still think PS5 will also have RDNA2 though, 2 systems very close to each other when it comes to power and capabilities.

It all depends on how correct the Github leak was. That said no raytracing hardware from AMD and that PS5 would be RDNA1, while it said XSX would include raytracing hardware from AMD and use RDNA2. If you make a point that Github may not have been the full chip but just BC testing, that still means the APU would be RDNA1. If you make a point that Github only showed devkit APU and not retail APU, then why would AMD test BC modes for a temporary devkit APU?

In April 2019 Sony had 8 TF devkits. In February 2020 they have 12 TF devkits. Why create a 9.2 TF APU for a maximum of 9 months of use, test it for BC, when there is a similar PC GPU available? Worse, when there is actually RDNA2 hardware available, as proven by the existence of Arden/XSX APU in that very same leak? It makes no sense. The only way all of this makes any sense at all is if the 9.2 TF APU is indeed powering the PS5 - but there is something else with the equivalent of 3 TF of compute performance next to it. Like a raytracing co-processor, which would very likely use its own share of RAM. It would explain the weird symmetric devkit cooling design.

It's a previous Xbox devkit. Why would you claim otherwise?
RDNA2 = RDNA + RT + VRS
I.e. there is no RDNA2 it's just a handy way to label these additional features.

Found more evidence that whatever raytracing Microsoft uses is indeed co-engineered by them:

lol. rdna 2.0 is a complete new architecture xD wtf you dont know shit

interesting. thats why cerny said that sony is doing their own RT solution

someone is tryying waaaaaay to hard to spin things in MS favor. AMD will never abandon sony. I mean look at their install base compared to microsoft. Who generates more money on HW?

Not necessarily, there have been plenty of rumors that Sony started on their next Gen. System early and there's been a lot of dispute whether has RDNA1 or RDNA2.

If Sony really did start development earlier on Maybe our RDNA2 to simply wasn't available for them?

It kind of makes sense with all the rumors that have been flying around.

Not saying that it's true or anything with that would be the most likely explanation.

yup. That’s why their devkits were more mature.

no, both are rumors and NONE should be taken AS A FACT. NONE. Unless anything is confirmed by Sony/MS/AMD OFFICIALLY.

But people act like its 100% a TRUTHFACT that PS5 has RDNA 2.0. Yes, it can be, but its not yet confirmed.

Exactly. PS5 may have RDNA2, but until sony or AMD confirms it we don't know.

Sure they did Senjutsu got any proof its fake? Or because its positive news for PS5 means its fake, go back to github cult.

It's because it's a fake quote... the full transcript posted all over from other major sites, there is no mention of that rdna2 quote about xbox and playstation 5.

And lol at the github cult remark. Do you want me to tell you that the github is 100% accurate, and trying to use the info in to make fun of people won't really end the way you hope? Let's see what sony reveals. I believe it's 100% accurate right down to the specific number of compute units.

Whatever you and the xbox fanbots need to keep yourself happy. You already been banned on Era for being a shitty little fraud would not mind seeing you banned here as well.

Erm, Azure Raytracing? Is that a thing?

All I've heard of is software and hardware based raytracing...never cloud based raytracing. Is this even possible?
There were some video demonstrations of the technology from like 2013-2014 if you care to look them up on YouTube. I've always viewed it as a pipe dream but who knows.

I wasn't banned for any such thing. The things I have said have proven true. 12 teraflops and RDNA2, even when another ERA "insider" claimed it wasn't. I said confidently it was. Even when another fraud insider on era said the speed of the xbox ssd was a certain thing. I said he was wrong on that specific detail, and since then information has come out more or less confirming that he was wrong. Even Jez on windowscentral is rethinking his original beliefs on the speed of the xbox ssd.

I was banned for not agreeing with them on ps5 and ray tracing. Don't really care what anyone else thinks. I'll always believe what I want. That said, my new rule on here is to not feed the fanboys. When you get mad and start whining at me I just ignore you lol. There are people far more deserving here of being banned for being frauds than I am. Wrong consistently over and over, shifting arguments all over the place claiming to be insiders, and somehow are still untouched. The bar is that low for some. They don't need to be right, PS5 just needs to be near a certain threshold for them to stave off punishment. :)

Where did the rumors start? As far as I can tell with a load of xbox fanboy...

Every week it seems we kill one rumor and get 3 new ones give or take.

Then each is used as "proof" for whichever sides narrative it fits.
This shit is so frustrating to follow.

Someone has to be intentionally muddying the water with bullshit info. One week it's this, another week it's that. It makes no sense how we keep getting such conflicting info this late in the stage.

You mean if we count Xbox and Surface and Azure? Microsoft, by far. In the past Microsoft has used Intel for Surface, but it looks like they switch to AMD. Surface alone generates $4.5 billion a year just in hardware sales. That's the equivalent of 10 million consoles a year. Azure investments top $2 billion a year. And really, it doesn't matter.

AMD sells designs. They don't sell chips, they don't have any fabs anymore, they sold them all when they were suffering. And AMD sells designs to whoever pays for them, no matter how many or how few units the customers intend to sell. So if Microsoft tells them "here are 150 million, build raytracing cores for us, you can use them in your own GPUs" that's absolutely plausible. RDNA already has raytracing based on shaders. That's what PS5 will probably use. XSX uses hardware-accelerated raytracing, which is exclusive to RDNA2.

we can safely assume Microsoft had their hands in the development of the RT solution of AMD.
they are the leading Computer OS provider and are most likely very motivated that Direct X Ray Tracing will be supported as well as possible.

and on top of that they want that hardware to also work properly in thew new console/s. working together with the guys providing your hardware not only for the console but also the PC side should be a no-brainer.

Well, both MS and AMD have publicly stated numerous times that they have "co-engineered" the Scarlett (now Series X) GPU.

What does that exactly mean remains to be seen but remember when Phil attended AMDs CES? They seemed mighty "wink wink smirk" while on stage.

Wouldn't be surprised at all if Phil really did attend AMDs RDNA 2 reveal and confirmed this rumor.

Is it possible that much like the GeForce 3 architecture (first programmable shader GPU that was fully compliant with MS DirectX 8.0) MS had a part in the research and development of RDNA 2?

MS delivered 200 million to nVidia at the time and they basically built the GeForce 3 out of it (Code name NV2A for Xbox). That part was later codenamed NV20 for desktops and its programmable shaders is now todays standard across all GPUs.

We don't know if with the same token, MS funded the development of the RDNA 2 architecture with AMD to perfectly match MS new API similar to the way NV2A did with DX 8.0. They do mention: "Hardware accelerated Direct X Ray-Tracing".

Just a thought.

Lisa Su said it at CES, I think. IIRC she announced that both Microsoft and Sony were using their Zen 2 and next gen RDNA architecture. Next gen RDNA is what we now know as RDNA2. But I am not allowed to say this because apparently I am a diehard Xbot. :D Go watch the conference, it was relatively close to the beginning.

I checked. She didn't say that, you are correct. She did talk at E3:

PS5: "based on Zen 2 and the next generation Radeon architectures" while the slide shown says 7nm and Radeon "Navi". She goes on and talks about Xbox: "uses Zen 2 core and our next generation Radeon RDNA architecture". Definitely sounds like two devices built on different architectures. I probably misheard the Radeon architecure as RDNA architecture for Sony. She definitely sounds more enthusiastic about Scarlett than PS5.

RDNA built for Microsoft?.....I mean how gullible must you be to believe that.....Sony who has been rumored to be deep into engineering with AMD for PS5, even them RDNA 2 was not built specifically for them, who sell more consoles than MS btw.....That's like saying Zen 2 or 3 or whatever CPU that will be in next gen consoles was built for MS or Sony, that's preposterous....

RDNA 2.0 was built For AMD and it's customers....RDNA 2 was going to be built whether MS was there or not or if MS exited the race...….They had a roadplan for RDNA GPU's just as they have for Ryzen and it extends beyond the console launch of 2020.....As a matter of fact, RDNA 2 PC GPU's should land ahead of consoles anyway, so what's all this fake news and FUD about...
