AMD: Both XSX and PS5 RDNA2 based and have Hardware RT

there is overwhelming evidence that points to PS5 being RDNA 2 if you care to look in the right places.

First up is this slide from AMD, pay attention to the "SHADER" and "HARDWARE" points, as there's going to be some explanations below:

They mention that their current way of handling ray tracing on GCN and RDNA line of GPUs is through SHADER. In other words, there's no dedicated hardware to handle ray-tracing, so it is now handled through compute shaders to perform RT. This is what you'd call a software-based RT solution.

And this is where the Next Gen RDNA aka RDNA 2 comes in, with it bringing HARDWARE (or dedicated HW ACCELERATION) support as it indicates above. This is likely a similar HW technique to RTX's RT Core that's designed to perform/accelerate ray-tracing on dedicated cores instead of just relying on the shaders. This is what you'd call a hardware-based RT solution.

Now, many seem to have overlooked the recently released Crytek's Neon Noir ray-tracing benchmark that relies on compute shaders to do RT via DX11. This means it doesn't leverage DX12 DXR, or any of Nvidia's RT Core features to perform hardware ray-tracing. Its RT is purely software-based. To simplify it's specifically made to showcase RT on the "SHADER category" GPUs (GCN/RDNA1, etc.):

Crytek's Neon Noir demo: ray tracing without RTX analysed

Now let's take a look at the WIRED articles for a moment. When the first article came out in April of 2019, Mark Cerny made mention of RT support on PS5 surprising many of us and lead some people to assume what he said about PS5's RT implementation to be some sort of a "software-level fix" like all of the current non-RTX and RDNA 1/GCN GPUs already do via software (e.g. Neon Noir above).

To clear this confusion up - he made another statement, again, via WIRED in Oct. 2019:

His wording seems to suggest that "No, it's not a software-based RT solution because we've got dedicated ray-tracing acceleration in the GPU hardware instead". Another clear hint pointing towards it being RDNA 2. Bear in mind that while all the current RDNA 1 GPUs that are out in the market currently can support RT (through software), they do not have any hardware acceleration to handle ray-tracing in the GPU, as you can see in the first slide.

Fast-forward to Jan 7th of this year. 5600 XT press briefing QnA and Sony CES 2020:
During the QnA session after the 5600 XT's briefing, AMD's Mithun Chandrasekhar can be heard saying: "Both the next-gen Xbox, as well as the next-gen PlayStation, both of them are going to be powered by Radeon, and both of them support hardware ray-tracing natively". Notice he uses the phrase "both of them", and "hardware ray-tracing" in one sentence. We got confirmation that XSX to be RDNA 2 now. So one down, just one more to go?

Keep in mind that this QnA was conducted two months ago, on Jan. 7th, back when we were still speculating that XSX would end up being RDNA 1 with features like RT and VRS borrowed from RDNA 2, just like we do now for the PS5. On Feb 24th, not only did we get the TERAFLOPS count, but we also got the confirmation of RDNA 2.

And on the same day at the Sony conference CES 2020, we again sort of get a confirmation and a hint that it's RDNA 2:

RDNA2 and RT for both next gen consoles, said AMD dude on january, they claim. I hope this "ps5 will not have rt / rdna2" nonsense ends

AMD AS A COMPANY…STRONGLY BELIEVES IN THE VALUE AND CAPABILITY OF RAYTRACING. RDNA 2, THE NEXT-GEN, WILL SUPPORT RAYTRACING. BOTH THE NEXT-GEN XBOX AND PLAYSTATION WILL SUPPORT HARDWARE RAYTRACING WITH RADEON NATIVELY. WE WILL BE SURE TO HAVE THE CONTENT THAT GAMERS CAN ACTUALLY USE TO RUN ON THOSE GPUS

WE BELIEVE IN OUR RAYTRACING, AND WE WILL HAVE IT WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT.

I m glad this has happened as it means more 3rd parties will use it .

Update :
Video of amd saying it :

What I'm curious about is how things will be handled on the PC side of things, because as far as I know RTX is proprietary. So I have no idea how future AMD RT cards will handle past RTX titles like Metro Exodus for example.

Glad for both consoles being beast.

Wish I was the type of guy that hashtag some users here, but I not that kinda of person and neither gonna screenshot the post history from some gaffers on next gen thread.

Anw, good news from both sides.

Only a fanboy would really have you think either wouldn't have RT in it. As far the other stuff idk anything but don't pretend to like most people here lately who are now "insiders" and "pros" too lol

Why did it take them so long to officially confirm this? How would it befenit them to sit on this information?

uhm, point me exactly to where it says that both consoles use RDNA2? because in the link it doesn't even say a single console uses RDNA2. they just say that they are excited for RDNA 2 and that both next gen systems will support hardware raytracing by AMD.
that doesn't remotely equate to PS5 = RDNA2.

just like the PS4 pro isn't using a Polaris or Vega GPU, but uses some features of Polaris and Vega

yeah. Don’t get it where people are getting this from. Wishful thinking it seems.

Where does it say RDNA 2.0 for PS5?

they just say PS5 supports RT. Yes. But not RDNA 2.0

They say they are excited for next generation gpu techs like rt and rdna 2.0. In the same context, they mention next generation and literally say PlaySyation and Xbox in a Very inclusive way.

They did not literally say "XBOX gpu has rdna2.0' either. You do know It has on séries X because MS officially confirmed Just recently, wich obviously doesnt make It exclusive to series X

that has nothing to do with which version or RDNA the system uses. the RT cores are a separate thing that can be built into any GPU, it just happens to be that on PC that will only happen after RDNA2 is used.
I m not gonna argue with you over semantics . Wether its rdna 1.9 or 2 , amd refers to both in the same light as next gen rdna. U dont agree that it should be called next gen rdna , take it up with amd

Still. This is far from a confirmation. And they don’t confirm it for XBOX because the series X confirmation from Microsoft after the briefing of the article.
I would still wait for confirmation from SONY, because jumping into conclusion.

This quote has been public for weeks and was very much not ignored. it simply is the case that before RDNA2 was confirmed for Series X EVERYONE thought both systems are RDNA1 and this quote is just literally saying what it says, they are looking forward to RDNA2 and also both consoles have raytracing hardware made by AMD... that's it.
nowhere does it state RDNA2 is in both consoles, and it wasn't interpreted that way before Microsoft confirmed RNDA2.

meaning only NOW after that happened are people going back to it to interpret it in a way that makes it seem like they say both are RDNA2, when they absolute nowhere ever said that.

I just can't believe to what lengths people go in order to discredit a certain kind of leaks, in order to make leaks they like look more credible.
this quote is literally nothing, it was nothing before and it will remain this now that people cling to anything they can find online that helps their favorite black box look better, that is all this is.

You're setting yourself up for disappointment until its officially announced.

He is spesifically talking about next generation rdna and confirms both xsx and ps5 having it in the same sentence . What else u want amd to say ? Sure sony will also confirm it whenever they talk about it but this is a cofirmation that both xsx and ps5 are next generation rdna

yup. Exactly this. It’s nothing. Why is it coming now suddenly? really the last straw for some Sony fans. Lol pathetic.
The thread title alone.. as if it’s 100% a fact wtf xD

But the Github said no ?👀👀😂

There is no source. There are other publications that talk about that meeting, but none of them says anything regarding raytracing, which should've been a big deal at the time. Instead, they all focus on Mithun Chandrashekhar talking about 4K cards from AMD. So what you are reading at techquila.co.in is probably fan fiction.

Haha who are we kidding in few hours they will start 8 tf rdna1 ps5 lol but muhhhhh githubbbbb saidddd😂
I say that the ps5 will be based on a 1ghz thunderbird paired with an nvidia TNT based GPU (they had some infighting with the radeon group, so they had to go nvidia for the GPU and that was all they had in the price range sony could afford).

Lol its direct quote from product management lead of amd .

Some people aren't going to be happy with this.
Who? Seriously. There have been predictions based on leaks going both ways but who seriously would not like the ps5 to have rt hw to guarantee the feature is used by 3rd parties on both Systems.
Sounds like trying to fan the flames...

Why did it take them so long to officially confirm this? How would it befenit them to sit on this information?

The problem that many of us have is that delusional idea that they (Sony/AMD etc) Care so much about what a bunch of nerds on a fórum that represent a fraction of the global market say or speculate.

They Just dont.
