Domisto Domisto Nuclear Throne is one of my favorite "roguelike twinstick" games, but it is definitely simpler and less-nuanced compared to a game like Enter the Gungeon. I think it's still worth unlocking some of the characters and trying to get a standard clear. You can kinda-sorta plan your runs based on your character choice + the powers you unlock upon level-up + Red Crate manipulation. Some combos are straight-up broken.
Yeah, I might go back to it. Thanks for the tip. I think I got about halfway through the levels. I normally don't play roguelikes but it's got good action. Even though you can die in an instant, grrrr. Tempted to try it with controller next time even though that's probably inferior, but I just like controller these days, did Hotline Miami with it. Gungeon is also in my freebies so I'll be trying it at some point, probably soon.

Yeah, twin analog sticks helps a lot with these games. Gungeon is great, too, but I think Nuclear Throne is much more difficult because death only takes a few hits and the bullet patterns feel far more random / clustered. Give Crystal a try (who is invulnerable if you apply some good shield timing) while you unlock some of the other characters. There are some health-related mutations that you can select which helps you stay alive.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I find it's a lot easier to maintain this "no new games" challenge when I salt my playtime with arcade-like games. Played Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV (SNES) with my 3 yr old son and got to the pirate level before he we ran out of continues. He had a great time and it was nice to bond with him over a game that I played as a kid. Played through some Rocket Knight Adventures (GEN) and got a game over on the robo-train boss of Stage 2. I hope to beat this one and then try the sequel on the SNES, Sparkster. And as always, dat Daioujou 1cc looms like a scythe, always taunting me, always beckoning me closer.
This is kind of been my strategy as well, in addition to reversing course over last year when I "only" finished 43 mostly huge RPG games. Since my son and I have been playing Final Fantasy XIV (the MMO) I've tried to dedicate a solid chunk of time on my weekends to play through an older, shorter game. I re-played Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon and it was fantastic. I also beat last year's Sayonara Wild Hearts on the Switch which was a lot of fun.

It's good for me to break away from the larger RPG games now and again. Not just for the sake of making sure I hit my 52 game goal this year, but also because it reminds me that there are a ton of great games I missed or games I want to replay - which means I'm staying away from newer games that might draw my eye.

Respect. It is difficult for me to sink a lot of time into RPGs nowadays because they require such an investment. I'm not trying to beat/complete games, per se, but I do need to find a good middle ground because hopping from game to game with no evident progress in any of them can also be a drag in its own way.

i.e I need to nut up and beat Rocket Knight Adventures before moving on to Dynamite Headdy, I need to beat Daioujou before moving on to Gradius, etc.

apex and titanfall 2 are the only games i've been playing
Multiplayer, right? I know you're big on mp shooters.

need to sit down with terraria today and see what's up
Interested in your thoughts once you chew on it a bit. I think it's not as immediately "fun" as some of the other Minecraft clones but once you get a town going and you can actually explore without fearing death it really opens up.

lots of multiplayer, ranked apex matches and there's always something to do in titanfall

The kids got better but the dog died, RIP you were the goodest girl (this is not a joke my wife and I are actually devastated lol).

Still trying to wrap up Crimson Flower route in Three Houses, but another funny happened. I like the retooled relationship system in this game but it has its quirks, namely I unlocked a handful of support convos after my latest battle and Dorothea just proposed to three different dudes in one day. I know she’s trying to secure her future and all but

Well,I just finished ff6 last night. In all this time it's only the 3rd time I've beaten the game. I think I'll reload a save, get to kefka, then drop in on the arena for some rare items.

Got all the people, got crusader (which is kinda worthless imo), got a couple economizers, got the final moves.

Anything else I am missing?

That's a game I always try to squeeze every last ounce out of, because I never want it to end.

So I typically end up grinding in the dinosaur forest until all of my characters are LV 99, even worthless Gau.

Finished game #17 of 2020 Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (on PC this time). I had only ever played it on the N64 a long time ago, so that was a cool nostalgia trip. Since then I've been hopping back and forth between Deus Ex and Yakuza 0, basically finishing a mission at a time during my play sessions. I'm finding that's a very good way for me to keep my interest in games and not burn myself out. It works especially well in these two games since the missions are rather long most of the time.

Same, I have gotten to the end 10-15 times and never continued, sometimes even restarted. Such a good game.

Silent Hill 2 was very surprising to me. I've heard all this talk about how its a masterpiece but after 6 hours its not doing much for me. The aesthetics and tone are top notch. Music and sound effects haunting. All the cool notes and lore you find about the town.

But jesus, so many locked doors. The actual gameplay part feels like trudging through mud. I prefer the original.

I may still give 3 a try since that is a direct sequel to 1. And I will push through to finish 2. But yea, not a masterpiece in my book heh.

Going to try and finish off a few Switch games today that I've got half-finished and sitting in my backlog from last year: specifically Untitled Goose Game and Night Trap - which I think are both pretty short.

Back again y’all the baby is sick again and I’m at the end of my rope mentally but at least I finished:

Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Crimson Flower route)

This was my second time through the game so I got to take advantage of the new game + features, which were pretty nifty. Did Golden Deer route first time through as a dude, decided to go Black Eagles as a lady this time.

First half of the game is more or less the same, which is what I’d read before so no surprises there. Crimson Flower is the “hidden” route I guess? Normally when you play Black Eagles you end up on the Church route, but if you do a couple not so obvious things you’re given the choice to side with Edelgard and the Empire against the church.

I thought it was pretty funny how sudden and violent Rhea's heel turn was here. She orders you to kill Edelgard after you win the fight in the tomb, then as soon as you choose "Protect Edelgard" Rhea starts talking about ripping your fucking heart out of your chest. Then it turns into your sort of cliche oh-man-the-church-was-the-bad-guys-all-along anime style story, which is fine I guess. The character support convos hold everything together for me anyway.

Final battle was pretty intense and quite different from the Golden Deer final battle. I'm curious to see how the Blue Lions route plays out, but I'll have to save that for next time this comes up in the rotation. I did get the season pass as well so I'll do Cindered Shadows for that playthrough and get those underground weirdos in my squad.

I know I said I'd get back to the Layton game after finishing this, but eh...still not quite ready to jump back into that one.

*spins the wheel*

Looks like Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Switch) is next.

At the start of the year I said PS3 games were a priority. Obviously that's why I haven't played any yet. This is how I get backlogs.

Anyhow, after playing some Blackwell games, thought I'd run with the theme and started LA Noire. I like the atmosphere and the city looks great. Was really surprised when I knocked down a pedestrian. Was expecting the usual super fast dash out of the way, but it actually rates me on it and city damage. Lots to like, especially some of the facial expressions. And how angry Cole gets, lol.

Still going through some little indies, I did a fast playthrough of Shadow Blade Reload. It's kinda basic and a bit buggy with poor controller support but enjoyable enough as a quickie on the side. Looking at the achievement percentages most people never bothered to get halfway and it's only short. I do wonder if that stat is for people who own the game or played the game.

Also played another free game I had from a small site, Puzzle Chambers. I finished it because I'm a sucker for these logic maths puzzles but wasn't that impressed.

I am digging Ys so far but I saw an opportunity to knock another game out of the backlog real quick so I jumped on it.

Donut County (Switch)

This was entertaining, but calling it a "physics puzzle game" is pretty generous, as there's nothing here that'll really strain your brain. The writing was humorous at least, got a good few chuckles out of me. Don't remember what I paid for it at the time but it's $13 on the eShop now...probably a bit too much for this kinda game, if you ask me. Oh well.

Back to Ys.

Yeah Donut County felt more like a hidden-object puzzle game or a traditional adventure point-and-click where you are trying to find the correct order of operations to complete the level. Not really a physics game but it's good for a laugh.

The devs were very much of the same political leaning as the gaming press, so it got a lot of positive coverage.

I liked Donut County a lot, it felt like a spin on the Katamari Damacy formula. The raccoons were adorable and that helped.

Yeah, when you tell me something is a "physics puzzle game" I think Portal/Portal 2, and this game was definitely not that.

Ah that makes sense. At least it didn't bleed into the game itself, I guess.

As someone who started playing Katamari Damacy for the first time late last year (also on Switch, haha) I felt those vibes.

Well, I'm not gonna go all of 2020 with no new games, but since fucking everything is getting delayed I think January through early April would be a good time to go through the backlog. Then take a small break from the backlog to play FFVII Remake and TLOU2 in April/May. Then back to the backlog until September.

Finished 3 games so far, can probably finish another 2 or 3 by the end of the week if I just focus on one game at a time.

I just discovered this thread, but I unintentionally am already undertaking the challenge. I finished Celeste and Ori and the Bind Forest: Definitive Edition, both of which I bought toward the end of last year, and they were both great.
As a Nintendo fanboy, there's not much on the horizon for a while, unless you count Animal Crossing (which I don't). I have a bad habit of buying retro games that I don't finish, and I also have some titles from some of my older consoles that I never finished.

The list (for anyone interested):
- Super Mario Galaxy
- Luigi's Mansion 2
- Metroid: Samus Returns
- Super Metroid
- Donkey Kong Country
- The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons
- The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages

I do believe I may have more to play, but that's enough for me to go on with for now...

6. Sam and Max - Save the World (Season 1)

Another game (or games, as it's 6 self contained stories in Season 1) that I've been slowly playing through over a period of... 6 months or so... This is very early days Telltale, back when they were doing pure point and click adventure games... this one so old it doesn't even support widescreen resolutions!

The other weird thing was a change of voice cast between episode 1 and 2.. so it truly was the start of the company I guess

All up, I enjoyed it! I've liked point and click adventure games since my Amiga days, so it's a comfortable genre to return to. It's graphically very simplistic, but it works for the Sam and Max series, I could see/feel small improvements as each episode went along too, where they were obviously learning the engine and trying more complex things...

I've been very undisciplined lately with my games... I counted up the number of backlog games I've currently got installed and started, but not completed.. and it was 14 different games... oops! I got a mate to pick one for me to focus on and of COURSE he chose a JRPG that's over 30h long... so we shall see if I stick with it or not!

I'm going to have my first failure of the year this month though I'm afraid... Doom Eternal preorder is but weeks away from unlocking!

I started 2 RPGs from my backlog - Phantasy Star 2 and Terranigma. Neither of which is doing anything for me. Is it worth it to keep going in either of those? About 4 hours into each.

Sekiro defeated via "Return" ending. 73 hours. I completed everything except the mutually-exclusive bosses. It's a solid, standalone experience. I loved the combat and the tightly-knit kit of shinobi tools and skills and arts, but I would've enjoyed a way to hot-swap between combat arts (yes yes, technically you can pause and equip another one at any time). I wish more Ninjutsu abilities had been added (felt kinda like an afterthought).

I can't take a step back and compare to other Soulsborne games quite yet but I'm definitely fond of it. It was much harder in some respects but easier in others. I think it was designed brilliantly and purposefully in order to punish Souls and Bloodborne players who'd grown comfortable with a certain paradigm.

I also booted up Bloodborne (two friends are going through it for the first time) and could appreciate the differences in combat and enemy placement: enemies are far easier 1-on-1 in Bloodborne, but the game throws far more mobs of enemies at you than in Sekiro, which gives you more chances to flee and more chances to attack from an unexpected angle.

Will replay many more times.

EDIT: oh and I love the deflect mechanic. Technically your deflect will never, ever break as long as you keep deflecting consecutive attacks. I think as time goes on the fanbase will grow to appreciate how nuanced and well-designed the combat is. The posture vs vitality mechanic works very well and gives the player a lot of rock-paper-scissors choices in battle. Focus on stomping his head after that sweep, or focus on deflecting a certain combo, or using firecrackers during a certain attack. There are a lot of this-beats-that exploits in the game. I feel like it was the least "git gud" Soulsborne and the most "git observant". Enemy behavior was harder to bait successfully.

EDIT 2: dang, enemies in NG+ are far more aggressive. I love it. Most FROM games just amp up the damage and the health/resistance in each consecutive NG+, but in Sekiro it feels as though their combat AI has gotten a tweak as well.

Terranigma is great but it's definitely a slow burn.
Seconded. The first half of the game is essentially linear. Don't get the impression that you have freedom to explore a lot of different subquests until you've made quite a lot of progress.

I don't think I've ever spent more than 50 hours on a single playthrough of a game, but then again I've never really been the completionist type, and the sort of games I play (mostly Nintendo titles) don't really need that much time to finish anyway, save Breath of the Wild, which I doubt I'll ever finish unless Doctor Who lends me some equipment.

I think with difficult games such as Soulsbornes (and correct me if I'm wrong), the difference in time to complete between first playthrough and second is huge due to the vast amount of knowledge and skill you have going into playthrough two and subsequent runs. My first playthrough of Hollow Knight on PC took me 45 hours and I only got to 61%. My second playthrough on Switch only took 18.5 hours and I got 83%.

In my case, yes, my Soulsborne NG+ / replays are always much shorter than the first playthrough. I think that's pretty common.

Played through Sonic Advance on my PSP tonight. First original Sonic game on a Nintendo system and as a result doesn't look or sound like a Sonic game. I appreciate that the levels are shorter and the difficulty is cranked down a bit. I'd say it's up there with the best of the 2D Sonic games and certainly better than most of the shit they've been cranking out for the past decade.

Two months later, I have completed my second backlog game, Fire Emblem Three Houses. What a mess, this is the second worst western Fire Emblem, with only Echoes even worse. This terrible school, the mediocre main missoin design, everything is made to waste you time. When I beat the last boss - barely, in 97 rounds, turns out there is a turn limit of 100 rounds - I was sufficiently fed up with the game to be sure I will never play the other routes. I so hope that future Fire Emblems will not follow this game's example.

Best one so far: A Hat in Time (Worse than last year's best)
Worst one so far: Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Better than last year's worst)

Finished:
A Hat in Time
Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Currently playing:

Good luck with this one. I sometimes got really angry at Celeste due to its difficulty, but it was never unbearable and the game is the perfect length. I don't want to spoil it too much, but I would say that if you find the main story hard enough, you're not going to get much enjoyment out of it if you attempt all the bonus content as well, which is often hard to the point of unfairness.

Whoa. Forget this even existed. How is it so far?
The main levels are fun, but the bosses are beyond bullshit and completely unfun. Which is stopping me from continuing it: I beat the first one and now would have to do the second one (out of four) but they are so unbearably terrible - on top of being super difficult as well.

So far, it is great and not too difficult (I have only completed the first two worlds though). I will see whether I want to do the B- and C-sides.

Finally found some time for games and have ended up settling on Deus Ex Mankind Divided and Dragon's Quest XI. Enjoying both so far. The design in both is absolutely beautiful in different ways.

So you decided to play through only one game this year?

It is that big? I had an RPG binge last year with KCD, Mass effect 1, 2 and 3 (abandoned 3 for being shit), Disco Elysium, KOTOR 1 and 2, so figured I'd carry on in the same vein.

I was looking for a retro thread or something but seems this could be the closest thing. I want to do a poll tournament to determine the best PS1 game so I would like someone to critique this list. I'm pretty happy with it but I might have some blind spots. Just consider that the games should have a good balance of popularity and quality. So let me know what you think should be added or removed. It's 95 games now and I will only add a handful more at best without removing others.

I've focused on games originally on the Playstation rather than late PC ports or FF collections.
