Capcom confirms to be working on an official Street Fighter V netcode fix

The game was released 4 years ago with several important issues and according to many players it missed important features and content. Over years, they added a ton of additional features and content, and fixed all these issues except one: its netcode.

A few weeks ago, a modder released a rollback synchronization patch that fixed the issue for the PC version if both players had the patch installed, but the patch created more issues if one of the players (like the PS4 ones) didn't have the patch installed, so the patch basically enworsened the situation. The game producer just confirmed they will release an oficial netcode improvement:

It's key for them to do it as soon as possible, since they release Street Fighter V Champion Edition tomorrow (basically an ultimate/definitive bundle of SFV with mostly all its DLC, like all characters and all stages, over 200 costumes, etc) at the same time they will add the returning character Seth to the game.

Next month they will start the online qualifiers of the Intel World Open, an Street Fighter V eSports tournament for the Tokyo 2020 olympics. In March they also will start their SFV season 5 Capcom Pro Tour.

UPDATE: THE NETCODE FIX WILL BE RELEASED NEXT WEEK!

Good thing those fan-based scripts stirred things up. PS4 and PC owners, regardless of how well the patches functioned (or not), should be thankful to those guys.

Man fuck them. They had forever and a day to fix the shitty netcode. Now they wanna be concerned. Fuck outta here.
Honestly, I dont think its malicious. The corporate culture in Japan tends to focus inordinately heavily on Japan, even when the bulk of sales are international. This basically means that as long as the net code works in Japan, many Japanese devs will assume that it's good enough and that complaints are coming from fringe cases where internet infrastructure is insufficient. They honestly dont seem to grasp that Japan is in the upper echelon of internet connectivity. It was only when the fan patch started causing problems for the Japanese audience that they looked into it. I can only assume they finally figured out that the net code is fucked for most audiences when they looked into why people were modifying their code in the first place. All this isnt to say they're blameless by any means, only that telling them to fuck off now wont help them understand.

In other words, ctrl+c, ctrl+v the fan patch.

As always the toxic FGC complains about everything SF related, even if Capcom announces that they will fix the last main issue of the game and something that everybody has been asking to do in most fighting games, they only throw shit, don't add anything positive and can't be constructive.

Let's hope some day this type of people changes or leaves the FGC and the related forums threads/subreddits/etc. We won't miss you.

This says more about you than it does the game. 4 years and you still don't understand what a core game element is?

the people who are saying its too late probably dont even own or play the game, otherwise they would not be saying this. Also SF V in 5 years being on the market is one of the best fighting games to be playing right now, if they nail the netcode patch or continue to improve that aspect the game will be very well balanced on all fronts.

lately, I have been thinking about getting back into SFV so this is good news about the netcode.
It is a shame that fans of the game had to wait this long on a fix, however.

The only thing they nailed was that they kept people on a leach by dropping characters every 3/4 mounts, street fighter starVation.

Great news!

My favourite fighting game this gen together with Tekken 7 and Granblue Fantasy Versus. =)

Edit - oops forgot SoulCalibur 6. (This game needs a netcode buff too imho)

It's better late than never.
I understand your sentiment, but its been 4 years. That's outlandish.

Toxic my ass. It's been 4 fuckin' years and we paid for this upfront as we waited for the game to updated to full price potential. People like you are the reason the gaming community settles for less and get games in alpha mode on launch day with 100 gig "DAY ONE PATCHES". But its ok, because at least they updated, right? Fuck outta here.

you must not play other fighting games my guy? seriously sf v has had longevity much like sf iv. i can name plenty of fighters where after a few updated support stops almost all together only after a couple years. Rather it be continually balancing chatacters, adding new stages, killing bugs, adding game modes, new characters whatever. Also keep in mind it is very few and far in between where a launch title fighter gets it right out the gates.

People defending shit that took 4 years (netcode in a fucking fighting game) to fix just come off as shills and corporate boot lickers. Fuck the FGC and the EVO crew. They are the reason SF5 was so barebones when it came out and even if you think they bitch about it they also kept this game alive until it was finally completed years later.

to put some perspective and add to your point. SFV is a games as a service game masquerading as a $60 old-school retail game. The game is designed for people to be online and win online matches in order to unlock content that we considered part of a retail release in the past and 4 years later they are now going to “address the netcode” by — we assume — implementing rollback. I’m just a filthy casual but isn’t rollback a known decade-old fighting game networking technique?

Well they should be after some crazy people from reddit fixed the netcode in like two days. It still blows my mind that Capcom went through all this trouble to make and maintain CFN and didn't do the actual work to have their premiere fighting game franchise to have great netcode.

I've probably been playing Fighting games longer than you've been alive. And what they added later is irrelevant to my point. I said I'm not supposed to be jumping up and down after they FINALLY decided to fix the netcode that their community and product buyers have been talking about since launch.

Well, it's true that this took too much time. But in these 4 years they've been adding a ton of new content, new features, fixes, improvements and gameplay rebalance. They did a ton of work. Big AAA companies -as it is the case- outsource a lot of its work to several studios (more than 20 in this game), so sometimes it may be difficult to ask them to redo something because they may be busy with other projects, they may have shut down, some key folk may have left the company, this part of code can be part of an engine that if they change it may also affect/break other games, etc. In addition to this, sometimes they prefer to don't touch sensitive stuff that may break other things, specially when aren't sure how important an issue is, what part of the code is causing it, etc.

In addition to this, regarding that fix (that worked when both had it installed but created other issues), it didn't only required these couple of days. Before him there were other guys doing tests and saving videos trying to research what exactly was failing, how it was failing and how it may be addressed. In the case of an official patch in addition to this there are also addition tests to be done once the fix is implemented to make sure everything works properly in the different possible cases (example: in this case all the different combinations of wifi/wired, PS4/PC, far players/close players, good connection/bad connection, etc) and didn't break anything else. And after that to pass Sony's certification. And well, these assigning a budget and time that sometimes higher ups don't want to assign to the project because they want to focus on something else.

idk why they didnt just use the mod across platforms the fix is a bit better than before but the mod was godliek.
It's more or less what they did. They made an oficial netcode fix that implemented what Altimor's mod did plus other improvements but on both PS4 and PC. In addition to this, blocked the fan-made netcode mods to avoid the issue created when someone with a mod played against someone without that mod in addition to other mods that just added artificial lag on the rival.

Now it checks the ping between players every frame instead of only at the start of each round, and both resyncs and adapts the maximum rollback allowed proportionally to that ping in every frame. This means that when there is a lag spike when it goes down the rollback recovers at the moment, and artificial lag isn't carried to the next round. There are some experiments or videos proving that.

So there will be an improvement for most cases, but always there will be some bad matches from time to time. If people has awful connections, bad wifi/cable/router/firewall/antivirus/ISP connection/etc setup or configuration, or huge distances or internet traffic between the houses of the players, that obviously the netcode can't fix it.

Ono asked to send (please, constructive. Don't be toxic) feedback to the @SFV_server Twitter account. I assume that the next improvement they can do is to improve how they assign the ping bars to the other players to make them more reliable, because sometimes you get bad connection with a 5 bar player and sometimes a great connection with a 2 bar player. And maybe to add optional wifi and region/country filters.
