PS4 worldwide shipments top 102.8 million, becomes second best-selling home game console of all time

Worldwide total shipments for PlayStation 4 have reached 102.8 million, Sony announced in its financial results for the three months ended September 30, 2019.

PlayStation 4 is now the second highest-selling home game console of all time, topped only by PlayStation 2 at 155 million units, and followed by the original PlayStation at 102.49 million units and Wii at 101.63 million units. (This does not include handheld consoles.)

A total of 2.8 million PlayStation 4s were shipped during the second quarter of fiscal year 2019, which is down 1.1 million from the 3.9 million shipped during the same period the previous fiscal year.

Sony also altered its previous forecast that it will sell 15 million PlayStation 4s in fiscal year 2019, which runs from April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020, to 13.5 million PlayStation 4s.

Here are a couple of additional statistics:
  • There are 36.9 million PlayStation Plus subscribers as of September 30, 2019, which is up 2.6 million from the 34.3 million subscribers during the same period the previous fiscal year.
  • PlayStation 4 software sold 61.3 million units in the second quarter of fiscal year 2019, which is down 13.8 million from the 75.1 million software sold during the same period the previous fiscal year. 37 percent of those sales were full game software digital downloads, compared to 28 percent the previous year.

Can it come close to PS2?
I mean by the standards of the wntirr history of gaming, they already have come closer than any other home console. The PS2's lead is just so insanely ridiculous that I doubt anything is ever likely to get within 10 million of it.

Personally I'm sticking with my original prediction of PS4 reaching 120-125m. Huge, but still an Xbox 1 away from the king.

  1. PS2 : > 155 million
  2. PS4 : 102.8 million
  3. PS1 : 102.49 million
  4. Wii : 101.63 million
  5. PS3 : 87.4 million
And yet we have people say Sony was lucky to have MS tumble at the beginning of this generation Lol.
Microsoft was in prime position this gen to cause another major split coming off the back of the Xbox 360, they fumbled very hard.

If Xbox One came out of the gate swinging and was a value proposition as compelling as the PlayStation 4 without all that policy nonsense the PS4 wouldn't be where it is now. Would it be successful? Absolutely, but the reality is the split would probably be in 70/80 million neighborhood instead of a 100/50 million split.

Xbox 360 couldn't even outsell PS3 though. That says a lot.

Could say exactly the same for the PS3. If it came out earlier and was a value proposition as compelling as 360 etc etc etc the 360 wouldn't have done what it did.

It works both ways you see. No ifs and buts. It is what it is.

It's still uncertain what sold more but there was an inclination that the 360 did in the end. That Zhuge guy said there was a miscalculation when sales data started being merged after the One came out and that either the 360 outsold the PS3's final number or the Xbox One had sold more than previously thought.

It was one or the other, and he leaned into those numbers being applicable to the 360.

But but but XboxDone X is the strongest console of all time.....
No Bloodborne, god of war, last guardian, uncharted games, Death Stranding.... The only reason I would get the X s to play Gears of War trilogy in real 4k... but they did not X updated original Gears and ultimate editon sucks

Over one third of consoles are subscribed to playstation plus? Depressing. There's a nail in the coffin for being able to play your games that you paid for on your console that you paid for on your internet that you pay for without paying extra.

Not gonna lie, its impressive the power Sony has behind the PlayStation brand. Even their biggest cock up with the PS3 barely made much of a dent. But cocky Sony is worst Sony, so hopefully they learned their lesson there.

70/80? So, downplaying PS brand while over-exaggerating Xbox brand heavily

Oh, it's you.

PlayStation sells way more than Xbox worldwide. It would never be that close with all things being fairly equal.

so many infos holy shit.

this year ps4 didn't have a Spider to spice things up and it also lost TLoU2 for this fiscal year. It is a quite natural down from last year.

Numbers are still solid af.

And that's before PS4 at $150 this holiday.

If they match their forecast, that's 116.3 million units by March 31st, 2020.

holy crap that is impressive.

we still have titles like Death Stranding, The Last of Us 2, and Ghost of Tsushima. well to be fair, i don't expect DS/GOT to sell much. TLOU2 will wipe the floor with those 2 games but still...GOT might be a cool game worth picking up and of course there is the rabid Kojima fans.

The PS4 still has a good year left in it. no chance it will get close to PS2 but i think 120 is where it will end up.

all that said, it'll be hard for them to do the same next gen. but we'll see.
