I bought Dragon's Dogma for PS4. What do you think of the game?

I originally bought it for PS3 way back when and actually never opened it, but I much prefer playing games on PS4 and the full version was cheap and I figure if I'm to play it on one console, play it on PS4, so I bought it. I usually play two big RPGs per year(far down from the number I used to). FFXV will be one later this year, and Dragon's Dogma is another.

What do you think about the game and anything I should know before I start? I won't be starting it right away, but interested in hearing everyone's thoughts about the game. Most really liked it if I recall.

One of the most fun open world RPGs in quite a while. My best advice is to not rush it, there's a ton of early, mid, late and post game content. It's got great combat, and you can switch classes at any time. The only thing that gets "locked in" is the stat bonuses you get from leveling up as a particular class. Also, either don't read up on the romance system at all, or read up in detail, depending on if you want a hilarious ending or not. If you want a boost near the beginning of the game, make sure you check your item storage ASAP since all versions of the game with Dark Arisen added in give you some OP starter equipment. Also, I'm not sure if it's only in PC, but online mode is disabled by default, so that's worth looking at.

Story is weird, but I love that game. Liked how pawns could learn stuff about quests and monsters. Would have loved local and online co op, and wish there were more games like it.

Still play it.

Fucking love that game, one of my favorites. If you want advice before going into the game, I say fuck the advanced classes. The basic vocations and hybrid vocations are where it's at.

I liked the idea of the global boss. Having the community as a whole fight a dragon was an interesting concept that I have only seen happen in Black Desert after that.

Really really good, fun combat. And varied. 3 classes, 3 advanced classes, and 3 hybrid classes. Each with both shared and unique abilities. Enjoy being a Magick Archer. Some of the late game spells have some of the best casting and animations you're likely to see.

What someone said about stat upgrades is true, but by the end game it matters very very very little so min-maxing is incredibly pointless. Just play it however you want and have fun.

I remember the first time I played the demo on PS3. I didn't get it at all. Then something persuaded me to buy Dark Arisen, and it was a fantastic decision. Then the PC port happened, and I got to play the game without horizontal borders and 20-25fps gameplay.

So I don’t have to worry about missables or whatever? I’m very OCD when I play RPGs it’s why I cut down my amount. Playing to acquire everything, all the best items, equipment, secret characters, spells, side quests is very tedious and stressful. I can only handle that a few times a year.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I wouldn't worry too much about missables. If you're anything like me, every time this game gets brought up I end up re-installing it and playing through it again anyway.

Gonna have to try out that Xbox One X patch now.

Personally, i think it's one of the greatest ARPGs ever. Knowing it only came with like half the content it was supposed to, makes that even more remarkable

Do remember though that wolves hunt in packs
I was beaten to it!

Nope, you don't need to do that and it also comes with a new game+

There are quests that you might miss. It's a good idea to try doing the quests as soon as they become available. For the escort quests don't worry too much on your first playthrough. it's better to do them in NG+ when you have placed all the portcrystals and you can fast travel to the destinations your escorts ask you to go much safely.

If you want the best equipment prepare to farm A LOT in Bitterblack Isle because some of the best loot is randomly generated (although there is a trick that can help you save some time) but for a new player you shouldn't worry about that yet.

It's a very big deal. I would say it's unplayable without pawns though i haven't tried it
For a veteran player it isn't. but for someone completely new to the game it could easily become frustrating.

I'm pretty sure the game won't let you continue past the second town without selecting a party of pawns. Maybe afterwards you could send them all (except the one you created, obviously) back? Honestly not sure since I've never tried.

If it's just the online aspect of pawns that H Horsemama1956 is worried about, the game has a few dozen "built in" pawns that can be summoned even if the game is offline. While not totally recommended, you could summon your own pawn + two offline "starter" pawns and just keep that party throughout the whole game.

I don't always do NG+, it depends on how I feel after I finish. Sometimes I finish games and am totally satisfied and I have a long backlog of games and can't stand starting the same game over while a pile of new experiences are sitting there staring me in the face. And also sometimes I beat a game and especially when I spend 90+ hours on it, even if I absolutely loved it, I can't tolerate another second of it, let alone starting it all over again from the beginning. But again, it depends on the game. That is usually more story-driven games like Tales where you have to go through all the dialogue, and puzzles, and stuff all over again. With less narrative driven games that are kinda go and do your own thing like a Skyrim, I'm much more open to it, since the experience can be totally different a second time through.

What gonna get it on Steam, saw it on sale last Thursday and it was full price when I went to buy it Friday. One day sales piss me off so bad.

Bought and played some of the Switch version. I think there’s a highly recommended quest relating to a lost girl and the witchwood. I only got as far as finishing that quest and doing a little bit after. Just haven’t had the additional time to dedicate to the game, as I’ve been interested in “shopping around” and trying out different games to see what I really want to sink my teeth into.

Still, it’s fun. Combat is excellent. I still have to get used to using the pawns.

I'm really surprised by how many who likes this game. I got it for pc, and then open world, if you even can call it that, is hideous. It feels like corridors from A to B.

Combat is dull as well. Compared to Witcher 3 or even Skyrim, it's safe to say I find it as interesting as hot garbage.

Dragon's Dogma pisses all over both Skyrim's and Witcher 3's combat with its hands tied behind its back and while still making omelete for breakfast.

A big tip for your first playthrough: choose your first class carefully, your stats increase according to the class you choose, and your first level ups have the biggest impact on stat increases.

^This also applies to your pawn.

I’d like to know the multi-verse coordinates you are using for your gaming reference point. In this reality, Dragon’s Dogma easily has best combat of the games you listed. It’s not even close.

This is true for min-maxing unless he wants to have a more all-around character.

I freakin' loved it! I played the base game at launch and was hooked on it until I beat it. I have Dark Arisen and have been meaning to eventually get around to it but I've got quite the backlog which is dedicated to new experiences for me. I'm still butthurt that DD Online never came out over here. Even if it sucked, my best friend and I would have loved to play it together. Plus, the art design was absolutely fantastic in that. Every time Capcom announces a new title and it isn't a sequel to Dragon's Dogma, I die a little inside. Not too much longer and I'll start to look like a beef jerky "souls" character.

Great game, I'm actually still playing it on PS4 (on and off since release on PS4, also on PS3 days).

I enjoyed it as a decent RPG experience initially, but these days I see it more as a way to customize and optimize my pawn. Part of the fun for me has been maxing out her equipment, knowledge and refining her combat behavior. At this point, I believe her to be fully optimized. Feel free to hire her (PSN: Akuma_818).

She is max level, so you might have to shoot me a friend request in order to avoid the Rift Crystal cost. She could possibly make some of the earlier content too easy, since she is end-game optimized, so be sure to take that into account.

It's soooo good, especially with the DLC. Do the Dark Arisen DLC early at like LV 40 (i forget exactly) maybe if you want to get a Dark Souls difficulty vibe.

EDIT: Still best spell effects in any game. Play a mage-type or bring one as a pawn.

Incredible combat and exploration. Specially without using infinite ferrystones. Very fun pawn mechanic and a good amount of customization. Easily one of the best ARPGs ever. Top 3 for me.

There are some issues like how the menu is not as intuitive as it could be and if you want a story heavy narrative you won't find in it.

Careful with which NPCs you are giving presents.

I started replaying this game a few nights ago. This is my 3rd play through in as many years. Obviously I think it is a great action RPG, but it does have its quirks and things to get used to.

Chief among those is the menu system. There are lot of inventory menus to open and close. A streamlined UI is not a Dragon's Dogma strong point.

The other is the pawn system. It is an odd concept that I have never seen in any game before. At first I did not like it at all. But after coming to grips with it, I cuddled up to it and now I like it. But there was a learning curve involved and attitude adjustments I made along the way.

Everything else about the game is good or great. Art style, graphics, combat , armor selection, weapons, enemy variety, quests, exploration,
dungeons. All that stuff that makes for a fun RPG Dragons Dogma has, and delivers in spades.

If you don't want to miss anything you will definitely need a guide.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
It's a cool game, but it lacked personality. The story is nonexistent, and the aesthetic is painfully bland. But that combat's great. I finished it a few weeks ago on PC, and while I definitely had a good time, I've already kinda forgotten the game exists.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. It feels very unpolished for me. And I have to Google lots of things the game doesn't tell me.

It had amazing mechanics and customization and graphics.

It suffered though on the story, inventory management, size and voice acting.
The main story took a nosedive in the middle when you where asked to "just do a series of quests".
Inventory was tedious to manage.
Most voice actors sounded bored. Especially the Pawns.
And the game could use some more towns and monster variety in the main game.

This is a franchise with potential if it where to had a sequel or two...

This game needs a sequel. I didn't play it until earlier this year on switch and had a good time with it. If they could polish up some of the rough edges in a sequel and expand the size and density of the world we would have an instant classic on our hands.
