Next installment of Saints Row "deep in development"

latest

THQ Nordic is laying out all the news this morning after its recent earnings call - not only is it snapping up various game developers and talking about TimeSplitters, but it has announced Volition is developing a brand new Saints Row game.

The last full entry to the series was back in 2013 when Saints Row IV was released, and with the expansion Gat out of Hell releasing in 2015, fans have been waiting for four years for a new adventure in the franchise.

It's been suspected for a while now that Saints Row 5 might be in production after the success of the fourth installment. But there's little else to go on, as the only information today is that the game is "deep in development".

THQ Nordic stated in its press release it is expecting "at least two major AAA-releases" before March 2021, so it's possible we'll see the new Saints Row game within that time frame.

Now the game's been officially acknowledged, there's no doubt we'll hear more info in the coming months. We'll keep you updated as soon as anything crops up.

I would love to see a new Saints Row similar to Saints Row 2 and The Third. In fact, I would be fine if they just re-released the original Saints Row for PS4, Xbox One and PC like how they're bringing back Destroy All Humans!

After GTA V/Online, I don't think any other company can compete in the open-world sandbox genre.
Maybe not financially but gameplay has always been something that set Saints Row apart from GTA. I remember the first time I read about Volition working on the PS3 port of Saints Row (before they ultimately cancelled it to focus on the sequel) and seeing screenshots of the player derailing a moving train with an RPG, and thought it looked awesome.

GTA V was overrated too. I realized it was just window dressing - better graphics and attention to detail with less exciting physics and not as much to do compared to the series' previous rendition of San Andreas on the PS2. I've been a longtime fan of GTA but I think Rockstar need a kick in the pants to try and prove they're as good as they used to be.

I agree to an extent. San Andreas will always remain to be the best GTA ever. However, GTA Online really brought back the fun that San Andreas had, especially with all the updates released these past 6 years!

I like GTA V gameplay mechanics because they're a nice balance of fun and sim. I never found Saint Row to be up to par but that's because after playing GTA IV, any game with worse physics engine (GTA V withstanding), would immediately stand out for me and not in a good way.

All in all, some competition is better than none. I'd argue that Saints Row pushed Rockstar to make GTA V/Online great more than any other open world sandbox franchise.

Just remember that GTA V is still selling like hotcakes which proves that there's something special about it. It's definitely earned that 97 metacritic score.

I think it's continuing to sell because of GTA Online and being re-released on PS4/Xbox One.

I was replaying GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas for the PC the past couple months and it's really a night and day difference if you want to talk about the gameplay mechanics. There's not as much of a focus on realism and driving down a pre-determined path and the little things like sluggish, meticulous character animation not yet being a thing. I don't know how else to put it but you seem to be able to move and do things faster in older entries.

I want that kind of game-like feedback and control in GTA VI on top of the better graphics of which the latter is a sure thing. Right now, at least in my opinion, there are more fun open world experiences than GTA V like Sleeping Dogs (excluding the gunplay). It's sort of like Final Fantasy which is the most popular in the JRPG genre but there are arguably better, lesser-known games.

I honestly love all the GTA installments and it's my favourite franchise next to Metal Gear Solid. However, I don't think Rockstar will go back to the way the PS2 installments played because they want to move forward and bring something new to the table. It's insane how GTA III, a masterpiece in its own right, is now seen as outdated by the iterations that came afterwards. Do you know how difficult it is to do that? Not only improve upon an amazing game but to make it look and play like it's outdated trash? In my eyes and mind, it's not trash but I've spoken to people who cannot go back to the old installments ever because they are just simply outclassed by the new GTA installments.

Yeah, but that's like saying you can't go back to playing Metal Gear Solid on the PS1 because Snake Eater, Guns of the Patriots and/or The Phantom Pain are better for one reason or another. I think it's good to revisit the classics now and then. You get a better idea of what made the series great in the first place.

I fully agree with you. It's a shame that the majority of gamers don't think this way, atleast not anymore. It's all about what's the newest features, for better or worse. I love revisiting old games but I'm an enthusiast of the medium.

I love volition and I thought saints row 1&2 were very serviceable games. To me they were the first next Gen sandbox games with some impressive physics and world AI.
I hope they stick with a more wacky GTA vibe rather than the over the top superhero stuff.

I've only played Saints Row 2... And the thing that comes to my mind was the name of a burger joint called "Freckled bitches" correct me if I got it wrong.

Bomba in deep development. The series was already depleted when gat out of hell came out and killed it.

gimme gimme! i admit i dropped off GTA's after San Andreas. IV and V i barely played through. i remember picking up V for the first time and dying over and over in the first mission cos i didn't want to do exactly what the game wanted. kind of sums up Rockstar's games for me.

but i discovered Saints Row and played through 3 and 4 all the way, 100%. those games were just so much fun, with so much freedom. the superhero moves in 4 were just awesome. fighting those monsters jumping from building to building. the black hole gun. the insurance mini game where you fling your body into as many cars as possible... sooo good!!

so yeah for me SR>GTA at least at the moment.

I like saints row, especially the over the top nature of the comedy. I’d be all aboard for a sequel, just please... for the love of god... fix the driving physics.

After 3 it went to hell imo. Even then I still enjoyed it far more than anything GTA after Vice City.

In my mind, GTA V was worse physics in a lot of key areas than San Andreas. The cars in SA behave more realistic, there is a realistic turning circle that makes driving in SA much more satisfying when compared to V - in SA there also isn't that overbearing on rails feeling and sticky gravity feeling that is in GTA V you feel with bikes and quads sort of "snap" into place from a jump to make it far harder to crash them and dismount. This kills most of the enjoyment for me. It is something that gives it more mass appeal, it undoubtedly requires less (or no) skill, and is dumber in terms of physics - a terrible regression - from the PS2 era no less.

GTA III feels way more dated than SA. But V feels like a backward step, masked by pretty graphics and more realistic sounding car engines.

The kicker is I firmly believe that for the first time ever GTA physics will NOT change or try to "improve" at all. They have the formula, in their minds at least, in my mind(!), for maximum sales. They won't dare to fuck with this. So I fear, console owners at least, are stuck with a dumbed down game that just isn't terribly enjoyable in any deep sense. For me the physics in V make the game world itself seem far less believable ironically and make me want to inhabit it less. Something reflected in my 30 hours of game in in GTA V, and upwards of 200 hours playtime in GTA IV. It's just less satisfying and more fake feeling.

Nice, excited. I have a feeling they know it needs a reset. More super powers and alien stuff would be lame.

Hopefully, gets back on track. Agents of Mayhem was.....yeah. I'm hoping the next Saints Row is great. I had fun with with 4 but I hope it's more like 1, 2 and 3.

Well given that R* only seems to be able to do 1 per gen now, there is ample room for someone to fill in the gaps. Saints Row did well for itself when GTA was at the top of it's game, there's still room.

Saints Row 2 is one of my all-time favorite sandbox type games. It was just so fun to play. I hope they are taking the series back to its roots and honestly, I never even finished GTAV and that was after 3 or 4 attempts to garner interest. It might be an opinion only I have, but I thought GTAIV was the better game.

Maybe it didn't have the online expansions or the same massive amount of content, but I actually gave a shit about the main character and progressing the story. The game was awesome and GTAV is the ONLY 3D GTA I haven't been able to complete.

(somewhat off-topic)

I'd love for Volition to do a remake of Summoner. That was the first dark RPG that I played and I loved it, despite it's considerable flaws. Summoner 2 wasn't as good.

I enjoyed all of them. The first few were classic San Andreas style dumb fun while GTA IV went up it's ass with realism and story. The later crazy ones were neat too with the matrix stuff and super powers.

Red Faction Guerrilla was one of my favorite games last gen, so I thoroughly enjoyed Volition's output last gen. They really fell off a cliff though.

Are you a millennial?

Do you realize that older millennials are pushing 40? Are you implying that they received a better education than you did or something? It's just such a weird call out in a thread. As is the grammar fascism, whether it comes from a 20-39 year older or not.

I guess I am in the minority favoring the over the top ridiculous aspects of SR. It just stood out as unique in a sea of open world BS back in the early part of the decade.

I find male millennials seem to live for grammar correction. They feel it important to spend time checking grammar and punctuation (on the internet) and then shaming people for not caring about it. Its a gaming forum, its fucking twitter, no one gives a shit other than these self riotous man babies.

Just another example of that generations misplaced priorities.

Yeah I never got what the deal is with that either. Always funny when they think it's a "sick burn" or whatever to be an english teacher when it just makes them look like they have a condition.

just return to the formula of the first 2.
