After No Man's Sky, Fallout 76, Sea of Thieves, and Atlas

Do you think people have finally learned not to buy into the bullshit hype machine generated by empty promises from developers during big game shows?

Literally none of these games delivered on their promises Day 1. Most of them were buggy, empty messes but people still bought the lies. I especially feel for people who invested 200+ dollars into Fallout 76.

What do you think the next great flop will be?

They haven't learned nor will they ever. If you check where all the money comes from towards EA/Ubisoft/etc. it's mostly from microtransactions which everyone yells and screams it's cancer.

I'll never understand people who pre-order digital games. What's the panic? They're going to run out of bits on release day or something?

Just hang back for a bit to see if the next big game is a disaster. A day or two won't kill you.

Going to have to defend No Man's Sky here by stating that the game has redeemed itself several times over.

No Man's Sky was created with a huge, ambitious vision that, when looking back, was always going to be a struggle to meet. It might've start off bad but today it's become something magnificent.

It's currently one of the best selling games on both GOG and Steam. Imagine what the game will be like if Hello Games keep plugging away at the updates for the next couple of years ...

I bought and enjoyed No Man's Sky and Sea of Thieves to this day. It's a fun game and I made some cool new friends travelling the seas.

Don't care about 'buying into lies' but spending a tenner to have hundreds of hours of fun and making new friends. Worth it.

I don't know what people expecting out of Fallout 76, these guys can run their single player game properly without game breaking bugs let alone online only game which will bring its own set of bugs and issues.

Everything just works

Regardless of what state it is in now, it still shipped with about 1 percent of the content people were promised, which is unacceptable.

The correct opinion right here. The only reason you want to play a game the MOMENT OF RELEASE is because you bought into the hype machine and the insane marketing.

Hang back a single day and it'll save you a head ache. Hang back 2 months and it'll save you 10% of the price. Hang back 6 months and you'll grab the game for 50% off in a bargain bin.

I get why people might not want to wait 6 months - some online games have a short half-life in terms of player base, and story based games can be spoiled very quickly, but a day? A week? Just to see if it's any good, or a piece of crap? That's worth it.

For the record, I usually wait 3-6 months...except for nintendo games because they're never on sale anyway.

The hype machine keeps churning. Right now it's probably all about Cyberpunk 2077! Really hope that one delivers. It's gotta. It's CD Projekt, they certainly wouldn't screw us over! r-right
But after Cyberpunk 2077 there'll be something big, something huge, and it will let us down. And we will not learn our lesson.

Hype for CP2077 is over the roof but hype for The Last of Us 2 is way bigger... While CP2077 topics equally share hype and doubts TLOU2 topics have only people who take for granted that TLOU2 will be Game of the Generation thinking that Naughty Dog won't fail for sure... I don't know if TLOU2 will deliver or not but its sanctification could lead to a rude awakening.

Oh wow, I haven't been seeing much of the TLOU2 hype. I believe it, TLOU was huge, absolutely loved it myself.
Think there's a chance both will deliver? My hopes and expectations are higher for Cyberpunk 2077, but I'm prepared to fall in love with another sweet post-apocalyptic cinematic adventure.

A lot of this is due to everyone adopting Agile development/ GaaS BS. Devs get out a minimally viable product with the expectation of making it better over time. The problem is that gamers don't consider the released version a viable product. Marketing is just marketing. They peddle lies and hype because all they care about is getting suckers to buy it in the launch window.

I have never been the type to want any single game to still suck my time months after release so I look at all of these things as uninteresting products.

I learned to stop pre-ordering a good while back. Not even necessarily related to how insane the hype campaign is. Just don't pre-order. Ever.

I own all those but SoT and I still pre order what I'm excited for.

pre orders are not evil you like to make them out to be, that's all on the loot boxes.

I haven't played TLOU1 yet so atm I don't feel anything for Part 2, I'm sure CP2077 will deliver but I've concerns about performance on base PS4, hope it doesn't run like shit :|

at this point i have lost interest in almost any of these type of games..... online, open world, GAAS, these bullet points makes my hype go down to 0 99% of the time.

Tried Fallout 76 for a few days when Beth made it free... It does some things good, but... it's a chore to play, a good chunk of players are fucking dicks, a lot of it was empty. This series was never meant to be MP, AFAIK. Regardless, it shows.
They should stop trying to force MP in their games and focus resources on a solid SP experience that will win people over and follow up with awards for actually putting TLC.
They have no because when people are quad dipping Skyrim, double or even triple dipping FO3, etc. Make a good game with high replay value and it will sell.

If you mean pre-ordering digitally then what happens if the game is a buggy mess? Or if it's just a terrible game? You're stuck with it. A day or so waiting would save this aggro. At least with discs you could trade them in or flog it on eBay.

Agree but it will be remember by :

Also the developer went radio silent after that. No matter if they fixed the game they lied at launch.

and people still preordering games show they have not learned....

The developer closed its mouth, worked hard, and focused on improving the game as fast as they could. They were not radio silent, their actions and patches were how they were speaking to their community. As they exited out of the rut they helped dig themselves in, they started to talk more and more about their vision for the game and bigger expansions.

Not sure how people can buy anything else from other developers / publishers or function at all if their reaction to HG and NMS’s launch is this vitriolic (death threats because they did not get an MMO at launch like they over hyped themselves? Yeah sure... why not  /sarcasm ?).

I do respect those people that ask of others to remember them by what others perceive they have done wrong, not by anything they do to right those wrongs... sigh...

"but no man sky and shit got fixed"

Except that it wasn't a bug fix in a week, NMS didn't ship with many features it promised and it took two years to be in a decent state (and three to reach its promised levels apparently), Sea of Thieves was a least worst case, they added content enough to have a positive reception in less than a year.

But still its not right to release these games in their original state, SoT could have benefitted from 8 to 12 months delay, NMS would require years, just showing how early they announced and released it.

Fallout 76 is a mess, it's not the worst of the worst things i've ever experienced (played the beta for free), but its basically F4 with a MMO mode, lack of NPC interaction, poor performance and game design issues up to eleven. I think they made this game in a year or less.

Service games are meant to be chores on purpose to keep you engaged with the game to sell you micro.
They most likely will never get fixed (there are some exceptions nms) however new micro will always be on the way. I always sit on the sidelines watching these games launch and they tend to follow the same path.

Have the option to pre-load. Get extra goodies sometimes or better price. Show the developer you have faith in them.

With all due respect of the people, but they have to have your mind too small to be influenced by hype, and from a distance you could see that they were not good games, especially Fallout 76.

One tip, be very careful on the hype of Microsoft, without sounding fanboy or anything, they do not fulfill what they promise

Would you recommend it for a single player? I was a big fan of the aesthetic from day one but avoided the game due to the reception.
You can grind by yourself, but SoT is best with friends. Even randos can be fun, but I've server hopped at times to avoid crews of 8 year olds or people without mics. Just remember the Golden Rule of SoT, nothing matters, so don't get salty. There is no progression to worry about, and the only thing you can buy with gold are cosmetic items. Have fun fucking around with your friends, and don't be afraid to lose everything, because it doesn't matter.

I remember a time I had a crew roll up on us, join an alliance to put us at ease, and then they fucked us with point-blank cursed cannonballs, storming us while affected, and wiping us out. By the time we all respawned our ship was already sunk. We threw up a red flag and tracked them down. They already sold our shit by the time we caught them, and after a few rounds of sinking each other we legitimately teamed up to take out a Skelly Fort. I think the only reason we didn't double-cross each other for the treasure was the sails we saw in the distance after we beat the fort. We hauled ass to the nearest outpost to sell everything.

Probably two hours of pure fun with complete randos.

Sea of Thieves has nothing in common with No Man's Sky, Fallout 76 or Atlas.

The game was never buggy, and never promised or showed something that wasn't in the game.

Fallout 76 is the only game that makes me irrationally angry. It was the only time in my whole gaming life that I was so angry about the game I was playing, that I thought, “I want the developers who made this abomination to suffer.“ I’ve essentially given up on Bethesda. I have no desire to purchase Starfield or give them another chance. I’ve fallen for the hype-train before, but every other time I, at least, enjoyed the game. Fallout 4 was fine. It wasn’t the best Bethesda game, but it was good enough. Destiny wasn’t the game-changer I had hoped, but I still enjoyed the gunplay and my time with the campaign and DLC. Fallout 76 soured me on Bethesda, Fallout, and GaaS as a whole.

Never understood it either.

Though there times to do pre-orders. When I used to buy discs, I'd do a pre-order if I knew the game is reliably good and I get a 20-30% off deal. Getting a game for $50 instead of $80 here in Canada is worth doing an E3 promo deal where the game comes out in 4 months.

Other than that, some people might get teased by pre-order trinkets, v-dollars, or extra skins.

If some gamers don't even care about that, I have no idea why some people pre-order digital copies. Digital copies I don't even think get pre-order discounts often like discs.

That International Business Times article has a bunch of inaccuracies in the article. All they did was quote a few random reddit posters (who were factually wrong or telling a half truth) and didn’t confirm anything with their own investigative reporting. Crap article, but typical click bait junk that passes for modern journalism.

That thread in the SoT forums that you posted is dated as all get out and almost everything with the very first update, the Pirate Legends update, was addressed. Rare told all the fans about the update when SoT launched, so there were no lies and they lived up to almost all their promises. At the time of the Pirate Legends update, there was literally only a handful of Pirate Legends in the world. Most hardcore SoT players were only about 40%-80% of the way to Pirate Legend. So 99% of all SoT players had access to the Pirate Legend lair and Athena’s Voyages as soon as they hit Pirate Legend.

Pre-ordering back in the day made sense with some games, as stores only had a limited quantity to sell and those stores were few and far between.

Nowadays though? Almost every shop is selling the major blockbuster games, often £10 or £20 cheaper than game stores and it's always possible to pick up a copy.

I nearly shook my head off of my shoulders when I saw the Cyberpunk pre-order thread. Why slap down £50 today, for a digitial copy of a game you won't even see for another 6 months?

Lunacy.

The entire point of this thread is that it didnt launch with everything that was promised. There's dozens of reviews, including high profile content creators pointing this out, including Angry Joe.

Can they really keep doing free updates for years? I don't know... they'll have to emerge with something new at some point, maybe NMS2 for the next gen.

The thing is though, Rare never made any promises that everything they talked about would be available day one. No MMO ever launches with everything. MMOs are always evolving and adding content. The vast majority of what they have talked about has been added to the game, along with tons of stuff they never revealed to the public or were asked questions about. There was a legit complaint that SoT was light on content at launch and that is why it received low scores.

How about being fair?
That list is 3 points and the second one is even super nitpicky.

Games like GTA, God of War and Zelda would fall into that category.
God of War showed a move in the trailer that could not be done ingame.

Most of these online games are aspirational and promise feats on a scale usually not experienced in that type of game before. And the communities they hope to attain can change what that scope ends up being.

The drive by hate a lot of these titles get is ridiculous but that’s usually from people who genetically hate online games because they suck at them and never play them anyway. As long as few core gameplay elements are solid, these games move from there.

And most of this content is free and nerds still bitch.

“Microstransactions! DLC!”

I remember the 90s. I remember arcades. Such is the nature of competitive games that need constant fixes and new content.

PR hype is bullshit for any game. Always. Just go with your gut.

How Bethesda has handled 76 so far is actually super impressive. The amount of content and quality of life improvements is commendable. Anyone not expecting the gamebryo engine to be not shit is kidding themselves. The 76 team is pretty much dedicated to cleaning it up. And fuck me ya know... it’s BR mode is fun as hell with the fallout spin on it and I never expected that either.

It’s actually becoming a great and unique online game.

I still wouldn’t suggest it to bethesdanerds until September tho.

People are dumb and like buying into the hype of any game and think it will be “the best thing ever”. I have seen this since forever and it shows no sign of slowing down. Another good set of recent examples are Destiny, Watch Dogs, and Anthem, which people think will be the most amazing thing in the world before they come out. These kinds of games never appealed to me, but it is interesting to see people go all in and put down hundreds of dollars on a collectors edition for these games, just to be burned again and again.

AAA games don’t do it for me anymore, it just seems too devoid of personality for me to want any AAA game. There were 2 games I was super excited for before release (irrationally excited for), Zelda Twilight Princess and Super Smash Brothers Brawl. I was completely let down by both to such a big level that I never fell for marketing hype again.

I have a friend or two that does this consistently and is always disapointed.

Those people usually hype a game based on other people hyping regardless their own personal preference and that usually leads to disappointment.
