If Sony achieves the 15M they estimate PS4 will sell during the current FY on March 31st, 2020 will continue ahead of PS2 launch aligned.

NPD let Mat control the NPD data in ERA because they wanted to hide some data to favorace some narratives but they failed because leakers break their goals every single month... so Mat stopped to try to control the narratives, left ERA and choose to direct attack the leakers (that are now hidden without leaks anymore).

Now why? Well I have no ideia... maybe some big player is asking NPD to control their public data and NPD is afraid to lose that big partner.

PS4 even today sells more WW than Switch... that is a fact.

Switch is neck a neck with PS4 if you launch align the data because Switch first year had basically two launch/holiday periods (March and November/December) while PS4 had only one (November/December) with heavy supply issues for half of the first year.

PS4 in terms of selling power is ahead Switch... to be fair even comparing Nintendo consoles Switch fall behind Wii.

Interestingly, during the last quarter PS4 outshipped Switch worldwide by over 1 million units, counter to NPD trends for the US.

That's pretty damn impressive for a console close to entering its last year.

I would bet that it is lot like xbox sales, which sells well on US and not so well anywhere else.

Switch is known to sell well in US+Japan and maybe UK, but other areas of EU and rest of the world? Probably not.

Playstation sells well on almost anywhere.

Switch is too expensive, too weak and have too little of real AAA-games to be chosen in Playstation Dominated areas.

Unless you are not mario-fanboy = switch is worse in almost all aspects (portable gaming isnt a thing in many country)

100 million is the norm for PlayStation home consoles & even when they released a $599 console a year after the competition they still made it close to 100 million.

Microsoft didn't mess up in the beginning Xbox One started off better than any other Xbox.

PS3 tied with 360 when Sony launched a year late $600 machine.

48% drop in hardware sales compared to the same quarter last year.

Of course being cheaper (or having promotions) helps to that 48% drop but even so the drop in units are massive unless XB1 and X where sold near half the price this year compared with last year.

Ive said it before and ill say it again. The wheels are falling off the xbox brand. Some of us have been calling a spade just that for awhile now but this year's dud of an E3 show made the scales from some the true beleiver's eyes fall. Even guys like crap gamer and MBG are smart enough to wake up and smell the coffee. The 360 glory days a long gone and all the good will xbox built up in that generation has long dried up.

Phil's job right now is to convince the true believers to hang in there long enough for xbox to transition from a console manufacturer platform holder into some sort of cloud streaming hybrid publisher. In laymens terms, they are in fact looking to exit the console side of thing but are not ready to pull the bandaid off just yet because they still generate some revenue from xbox live. The writing is on the wall, all you have to do is read it. Dont be surprised in 2021 when phil walks onto sonys e3 stage to annouce the Halo infine port to ps4 and ps5. Mark my words.

Sony built the PS4 on a shoe string, coming off of a disaster with the ps3, a new guy in charge, a move to the US and still, against all odds and aI competitor with deeper pockets and more goodwill, designed the fastest selling console of all time.

I felt like the shift actually occurred long ago, as far back as 2007, or the beginning of the shift. As Wii dominated with a casual (two Gamecubes duct taped together console), while MS/Sony pour billions into the more hardcore experience. This lead to some very bad decision, in my opinion. I felt like Sony double down on the core and hardcore players and games, and Microsoft went the other way.

Early days of Xbox were great, imo, 2001-2008... after 2009 slow steady decline although sales peaked a few years later.

I think another thing that will help it have a long tail is I'm betting we'll get more cross gen games and for longer into the generation than ever before.

The hardware should be the same architecture wise and make scaling games down pretty easy. That way budget limited folks can just grab a PS4 to play whatever new game got them off the fence instead of splurging for a PS5. I don't think that will be a huge driver of sales or anything, but it will keep sales going as people opt to get a cheap PS4 for some new release and to catch up on PS4 games. It could especially happen in places like central and South America.
