Obsidian and inXile Both Tried to Get the Rights to Baldur's Gate 3.

Baldur's Gate 3, the follow-up to two of the most beloved (and arguably best) CRPGs of all-time, was finally announced this month. It is being created by Divinity: Original Sin developer Larian Studios, but it turns out that other prominent RPG developers tried to get their hands on it years ago.

"I love that title," inXile CEO Brian Fargo told IGN. "You know, both me and [Obsidian CEO] Feargus [Urquhart] were chasing that for years. [Larian CEO] Swen [Vincke] too. All of us, for a decade."

The longtime Interplay developer continued: "After I left Interplay, it was the first thing I went for. I got very, very close at one point. I had the financing all lined up and then Atari got into trouble..."

Fargo, whose studio was bought by Microsoft last year and is currently in production on Wasteland 3, further elaborated on the pursuit of the license along with fellow new Microsoft acquisition Obsidian (who is currently nearing the finish line on the incredibly promising RPG, The Outer Worlds): "Feargus had a better inside track than I did and he wasn't able to do it. And then Larian ended up doing it, which was a great choice by the way. It was a great choice. [But] we all tried for it."

Asked what his version of Baldur's Gate 3 would've looked like, Fargo said, "We put some thought into the plot design, I remember. It's been over 15 years. All I remember is the [player character] was being persecuted. Everything was going bad and they were blaming the protagonist and you had to clear your name."

Ask me about my fanboy energy!
Does Microsoft still own Earthdawn ? I hope to see an adaption of Earthdawn, Shadowrun and Renegade Legion:Legionnaire from Obsidian and InXile. Or they can just adapt their own franchises like Pillars of Eternity, Torment, Wasteland, Bards Tale into AAA action RPG. Or they can try licensing Planescape Torment or Icewind Dale.

Based Larian. They came down from the skies to give us BG3. Pray for their health and well being.
Obsidian are talentless hacks and who the fuck gives a shit about inXile anyway?
Wtf is wrong with you?

All three would've made it the best they could I'm sure, but Larian have demonstrated how talented and focused they can be when trying to come up with the perfect cRPG and I'd bet my arm that BG3 will be their best release yet. Besides Larian means PS4 version too. Based Larian.

Phew, thank god for that, everyong can breath a sigh of relief knowing it's on that hit pc platform, the Windows store.

Hey it's not ideal, but given the length of the game is around 30 hours, you should be able to complete in a month of game pass, and then pick it up on Steam down the road if you feel inclined without Epic and The Sweeney seeing a single red cent. :messenger_grinning_smiling:

We have waited like 20 years for this game. What is another 6 month wait to get it on steam instead of these other horrible stores?

I know I can and I am getting used to it now.

We know the vast majority of PC users will just pirate it if its not on their personal store of choice.

I would argue that modern Obsidian are not the ones that made Kotor 2, or even New Vegas. Their latest output, which was Pillars of Eternity 2 was pretty bad, and the sales showed it, when pitted against the vastly better and improved Original Sin 2.

Good for Larian, the real RPG talents.

I'm just hoping it's real time with pause. Divinity franchise excels at turn based, but not everything has to be the same.

I for one will not. Regardless of how I feel about the situation I can wait.

One of the rare ones then, I don't pirate but you just need to see any of the pirate trackers or major trackers for that matter on release day to see how bad the issue is sadly.

How many of those would have bought the game in the first place? Thats a very deceptive number.

On Epic in regards to Outer Worlds: If you want to support the game/dev you should not use Epic in any case. You pretty much only support Epic and Take2 with that purchase.

I don't think I would mind it if Obsidian took the lead on BG3. I'm not as in love with the Divinity series as most RPG fans seem to be. Those games feel like one big grind to me.
