Calarts was a mistake.

Hmmmm....not a big fan of the art style personally. Was kind of hoping it would look like the recent Killer Instinct, but still be a 2D brawler like the old games. When they put a Battletoad in KI, I actually rather liked the look they went for. Was hoping for a visual style like that, plus the violence of the arcade game:

If only.... That's what I was hoping for too. This looks even worse than Street of Rage 4. Like I feel like they could've gotten hobbyist fan artists who would've done this for free and make it look better.

It isn't some lame canned skeletal-based animation with art pasted into it, and I like the amount of personality shown in the actions and character design.

I'm grateful that it's hand-drawn frame-by-frame animation at least, yes.

It's very much in the modern "wacky" cartoon style, which I've always hated. But I suppose it's more likely to appeal to the kids today.

It's just not for me.

it's crazy how good we had it in the 80s. pretty much every cartoon was anime, or at the very least, had those style designs. Ghostbusters, G.I. Joe, TMNT, etc.

at the time i guess it was cos US companies wanted to be cheap and offshore the labor. but it ended up producing legendary works. maybe there are some good things about capitalism after all.

Even cheap 90's cartoons looked better than most of the stuff you see today. Hopefully this TMNT rip-off won't return to suffer the same Calarts fate.

But speaking of that show I'm surprised it never had a video game.

I just don't understand. The people that are going to care about Battletoads are people in their 30s, 40s and older that actually grew up with it. When you change a concept that drastically, why not just make a new franchise and hope to hook a new generation?

I think the new Battletoads actually looks amazing. It's like a beat em up Cuphead.

...except it shouldn't be Battletoads.

I got the same vibes when watching that new Blair Witch game trailer. This looks interesting....oh wait, it's Blair Witch. Now no one wants to play it where if it was just some new game that happened to have a witch in it, people would be curious.

MAKE NEW FRANCHISES. Stop crapping on old/beloved franchises unless you are going to honor them and do them justice.

I actually like the artstyle, and I'm super happy with this new beat 'em up revival, but I don't think this is quite the direction, it should have taken. I think it looks like a great playable cartoon, but just I don't feel it fits Battletoads.

IMO Streets of Rage 4 looks far better. Especially that long play video they put out, with a full level. It was pure Streets of Rage.

Still I'm sure it will be a fun, good game.

I’ve kept my mouth shut on this because at the end of the day, it’s new battletoads...

But... this isn’t working for me. I get they are trying to do the Saturday morning cartoon look, but it’s not coming off that way. It’s coming off more like a very cheap and quick flash game. Some of the visuals are ok but some are awful. The queen is just... I don’t even know what to say...

The games had a certain charm to them, a certain style. It was mature content but juuuuuusssssst decent enough that it wasn’t actually “mature”.

But this? This just looks run of the mill average.

Nah... I don’t think I can get behind this. Poor show :(

This is not what I want from a Battletoads game, if it's a decent game I'll give it a go but disappointed with style nevertheless.

I was hoping for something closer to that old Rareware ACM aesthetic, maybe swinging somewhat toward the direction of nice rotoscoped sprites like KoFXIII.

The current aesthetic, aside from being generally ugly, is also difficult to visually track through gameplay. It's an art style designed for shitty cartoons with slow, flat scenes. A 2.5D brawler needs better definition of character boundaries and depth.

Easy Allies were saying the hit feedback was pretty bad and that was something that kind of made Battletoads what it was, you felt the hits.

So not only is the art style trash but the combat is bad too. What a shame.

What a way to ruin my childhood. I mean what's even the point of remaking this? It's barely recognizable. In the original you used the tongue to eat flies and replenish health, not to grab enemies!

The character designs are not my thing but the animation looks pretty good. I wish it looked more like Super Battletoads though...

Jesus Christ. Look how fast you can move in that game and compare it to the literal old man shuffle speed in the new game. It's like it's moving in slow motion. Playback the new video at 1.5 speed and everything looks so much smooter.

The Battletoads trailer served one strong purpose, and that is to make me stop wanting a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
