Final Backward Compatibility update for Xbox One

The good news here is maybe there is hope of the first three Splinter Cell titles being Xbox Scarlett enhanced down the road.

I've got a funny feeling they've stopped doing it on Xbox One because they're now working on a solution which means every single Xbox game ever created will play on Scarlett. They could have engineered the APU with this in mind.

They keep saying "thousands" of games will be playable on Scarlett yet there are only tens of XBox originals and hundreds of Xbox 360.
Thousands of games includes Xbox One games.

It looks like the team are going to be too busy with Xbox One BC to be bothering with any more Xbox 360/OG Xbox games (for the next couple of years at least :messenger_pensive:. Ah well, it was a good effort overall.

I don't get why some of you are sad. This should be great confirmation that everything is going to work on Scarlett, and they've moved on to that new project now. That is very pleasing.

Because there are still a lot of great 360/OG games which never got a BC release, and now any hope that they will is gone (at least for the next couple of years). I don't really blame MS. Ensuring every Xbox One game is fully BC (with enhancements too, I guess) is a huge project and no doubt deserves everyone's focus.

Yes. But also I wouldn't say it's gone. They're just moving on to new hardware and working on them there.

No Project Sylpheed for the X1 BWC???? MS, you guys killing me! And wheres Jet Set Radio future and my 4K Jet Force Gemini.......? Ehh I knew I should have bought Star Ocean for like 2 bucks on a yard sale like a week ago.

Great that there are more games, but there are still major holes.

Gears of War and Judgement
Fallout New Vegas enhanced
Conan
Pop Warrior Within & Two Thrones
Two Worlds 1 and 2
Kingdom Under Fire Series

Not the end of the world and I hope they continue with Scarlett.

BTW disc version of Too Human works! Non Enhanced.

I think it's a great thing they moved to Scarlett, means the harder to run Xbox 360 games that might been problem for Xbox one wont be issue for Scarlett.

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
I know they don't touch the original code, but it's too bad they don't go back to the original code and at least update the engine to support 16:9 widescreen

Definitely reads like they are stopping xOne BC support to work on Scarlet BC. I doubt these are the last games

Judgement has been BC for a long time, but I will agree that not having KUF kills me.

There are lots of other games from my library that are missing, but it’s not the end, it just the end for X1. Between My bc library and my XB1 library I can easily carry myself to Spring 2020 and then all those games come out, so maybe it’s better they rest and make sure they work properly on Scarlett so they can continue adding more games next gen.

So there won’t be more BC titles added to Xbox One, Xbox One S (SAD included) and Xbox One X... so it is the family Xbox One.

New BC titles will only be added to Scarlett consoles... so they are already ending the support to Xbox One’s consoles way before the gen ends.

“But this is it; no more classic games will be added to the list of backwards compatible games on the Xbox One and Xbox One X. But Inside Xbox host Julia Hardy has stated that the efforts will continue, just on the new hardware.”

It is weird but that is it.

I had to find the answer myself :messenger_downcast_sweat:

While I’m sad and a bit dissapointed at this announcement I understand it as well.

I’d rather they bring my library forward intact, then find out later that there are bugs or glitches in some engines that cause the games not to play right.

The BC team is very small and even things as simple as recompiling code can turn into a headache when certain parameters are changed.

I’m hoping that them being forward thinking on this project nets huge gains for them next gen, as far as making it easier to test.

Hearing that this is over, and seeing the entire list of Xbox OG games, I find that this is a bit disappointing. Many great games that were left out. The final batch of 8 games actually has 4 Splinter Cell games : how about some more variety ?

I understand that Outrun or Jet Set Radio are under license problems, but how about Otogi ? I don't really see a reason to not include this game, especially when Enchanted Arms is present (and is a pretty good game by the way).

I think they did some great work for 360 and X enhanced overall, but OG is lacking. Too bad :(

They said they will be picking it back up once Scarlett is out, they just have to shift focus for 18 months or so.

They won't add anymore games? There goes my possibility to replay Castlevania: Curse of Darkness on X1. Thankfully all the other Castlevanias are backwards compatible.

See, that's the problem. You have to rely on Microsoft. The best solution is to buy or build a gaming pc.

That doesn't guarantee anything. Many older titles run like crap on Windows 10 (or don't run at all), with unfixable micro stutter no matter how much we lock it to 60 fps & no matter how powerful our rig is. There's a whole load of people who've convinced they're playing 60 fps when in reality the frame timing is often totally off & it ruins the smoothness of the experience. Obviously consoles are themselves nowhere near acceptable in terms of the framerate & smoothness, but PC isn't a miracle solution either. Far Cry 3 for example runs far, far better on my Xbox One than it does on my GTX 1080.

At least with a console you can just plug it in, download the game & play the damned thing with no hassle, no headache, no "turn vsync off for xyz game & remember to turn it on later for xyz other application".

Well it was a good update, but the last :( :( :(
Still waited for many good titles I have for my xbox360. Well must be the publishers of those games that don't wanted that their old stuff can be used on a modern console.

I actually had a lot of fun with Unreal Championship 3, had it on both XB and PS (but no longer) … wonder if there will even be anyone playing this one? If there is a community there I might pick it up again if I can find it.

All we needed was PGR4.

But I know licensing must be a nightmare on that one.
and Alpha Protocol, Forza 1,2,3,4 and Max Payne and …..
So much is missing, but well if the publishers don't say "ok" or have licensing issues ...
At least Enslaved is now on the list, also waited years for that game.

I think that also means no more x-enhanced patches for BC games :( and there are so many diamonds, that would need a res bumb.

All those games are playable on pc (aside from the first few Forzas).

BC is a godsend for games that don't have a pc version.

I think Sega are missing a trick with Otogi. From Software are much more famous now, and a Otogi 1&2 HD Remaster on modern consoles would do pretty well, I think. I hope that's the reason for its absence from the BC programme.

Please tell me there's still hope in the future. Im just assuming they are taking this project to the next console. To be fair we did get a ton, capped off with Ninja Gaiden II and Ace Combat 6 this year. But these are some treasures still worth keeping the old systems around.

It feels like i walked into a trap - i mainly got my xbox one for BC , and now i wont get any more updates until end of 2020, requiring me to buy a scarlet without even knowing if my collection of Cave 360 shmups will ever work ?

I hope my original outrun 2 dvd wont be discrotted away by then. ;./

Now's not the time to focus on what we didn't get but what we did get. 100% backwards compatibility was never promised and was communicated clearly at the start of the programme (no old controller based titles, licensing issues and required publisher permission). We got a lot of what we wanted,

BLack OPs II
Asuras Wrath
daytona
Multi Disc titles that never previously had digital versions
Final Fantasy XIII with improved movies
Panzer Dragoon Orta with the level 3 bug corrected for the European release
OG Xbox games
Ninja Gaiden II
Whole game series available on one platform
Enslaved
Fallout 3 / New Vegas
X enhanced titles
GTA IV / Episodes from Liberty City
Emulator updates and bug fixes
Halo games even when Master Chief collection existed (thankfully)
Lost Odyssey free for the month it was released
Too Human, free and had well publicised legal issues
Radiant Silvergun
Street Fighter IV and updated versions
The Orange Box

Sure we all have personal stuff we would have liked but having been on the journey from the start a lot of the most requested titles got delivered within the clearly laid out constraints they were working in. If you are old enough to have been following OG Xbox compatibility on the the 360 in 2005 - 2008(?) then it's been a world of difference and over delivering. Thank you back compat team, you've done and amazing job and I look forward to what you do when you come out the other side of going dark.

Oh, im more than happy with what we got. Orta, Metal Gear Collection, Ninja Gaiden 1 + 2, Guwange, Radiant Silvergun, and Ace Combat 6 are reason enough to own an X on their own. But there will always be those titles that nag at the completionist in me - you know how it is. Very interesting to see where things go from here...

That video emphasizing all the games that work on X1 will carry over but not all 360/OG Xbox games, sounds like they're not putting in an emulator for 100% BC in the Scarlet for 360/OG Xbox.

No one at MS must have played Silent Hill on Xbox. Smh

Too Human doesn’t hold up very well. It reminds me of those mobile dungeon scrollers except worse. I tried it long ago, loaded it up again after getting for free, played for 20 minutes, and uninstalled it. The combat isn’t satisfying and the character doesn’t move around the screen smoothly. They must have had one of the worst camera angles of last gen.
