What's the last truly great RPG you've played and what do you think the next will be?

Last few great ones I played Persona 4, Persona 5, Horizon Zero Dawn, KH3, Sekrio. Next great one I'd say is Outer Worlds (if we mean like this year). In general....Elder Scrolls VI

UnderRail, Age of Decadence, Pathfinder: Kingmaker, Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar,....

As far as AAA stuff goes.....Dark Souls or New Vegas I guess ? Nothing else really comes to mind when it comes to mainstream stuff, unless you start going back to classics.

For the next I'm hoping Realms Beyond, Disco Elysium or Knights of the Chalice 2.

Final Fantasy XV, Valkyria Chronicles 4 and Nier Automata on current consoles. Also currently replaying the three Final Fantasy XIII games on Xbox.

Next-one ? Maybe Sakura Wars or Final Fantasy XVI. I doubt that FF VII will be any good.

So many choose Witcher 3. I have it on steam but cannot force myself to play it. I will try one more time.

The last one?

JRPG - Lost Odyssey - Next - Persona 5? Star Ocean 4 HD?

WRPG - Dragon Age Origin, Witcher 2 - Next - Witcher 3( still need to play it) and Cyberpunk 2077

Suikoden 2 gets an honorable mention since it’s my all time favorite JRPG.

It is an epic story of greatness. The tale all know in the way we all wanted. I was the character in that game. It was just.... *Caught in emotion* :messenger_open_mouth: :messenger_smiling_hearts: :messenger_loudly_crying:

Breath of the wild is certainly the best latest rpg I’ve played. Prior to that I’d also say DA:I, DS3 and BB.

As of now I’m excited for the next Zelda title (Links awakening and beyond) as well as whatever FROM’s next game will be. And cyberpunk.

Oh, and Pokémon gen 8. I’m a sucker for Pokémon.

I am almost done with another replay of KOTOR 2 such a great series kind of crazy there was never another. If that doesn't count I say Dragon Age Inquisition I know it gets some hate but compared to what is out there I think its a great RPG. I use to buy all the top Japanese RPG’s but I stopped this gen maybe I got burned out on them, I think the grinding I cant enjoy so much. I just started Xenoblade Chronicles 2 on Switch seems very impressive for the Switch, graphics and music are top notch so I will see what all the fuss was about.

Go for Xenoblade chronicles as blind as you can, 2 is good too in other ways but more appriciated after 1. Be ready for a bit of a learning curve/depth though.

"Truly great" is a very high bar. This is kind of cheating, but my answer would be KOTOR since I've played it on Gamepass recently. Of recently released games, I still don't think Breath of the Wild meets most definitions of RPG, but it gets a mention because the exploration is so great, and that's my favorite aspect of RPGs.

As for upcoming, I am very much looking forward to The Outer Worlds and DQ 11+.

I'm playing it right now. Trails of Cold Steel. Better than DQ11 and and Persona 5 IMO. Story is incredible. Good combat, tons of character customization with skills, powers, etc.

Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest is the last truly incredible RPG I have played. Currently playing FFVI, which is just good. I hope Fire Emblem: Three Houses will again be a magnificient game.

Dragon Quest 11 was the last great one. I really enjoyed it from start to finish. The next one? No clue, I don't think there are any big rpgs I really look forward too at the moment. Maybe FF7R, but I doubt Square will be able to deliver a decent in house developed rpg in this day and age. Apart from that, Elder Scrolls 6. Yeah, still very much looking forward to that one.

I'm a bit torn on this question.

I would nominate The Witcher 3 as I can appreciate just what a great achievement it is but the problem is it left me a bit cold. I enjoyed it but it just didn't click with me. I still have the Blood and Wine expansion to start because after the main game and the Hearts of Stone DLC I was all witchered out.

Lightning Returns was the last I really enjoyed. I got the platinum after 2.5 runs and found it a complete joy. I really loved the customisation in this game and the time limit was fun and a total non-issue.

I'm hoping that MY next great RPG will be Nier Automata, Horizon Zero Dawn, Dark Souls 2 or Bloodbourne as these are all sitting on the shelf at home waiting to be played.

Octopath Traveller and Xenoblade X are both good enough that I'll replay them. I don't play nearly as many RPGs nowadays, though.

Xenoblade chronicles 2. I'm playing tales of vesperia DE now and I'd say it's "truly great" as well.

Can't wait to try Dragon Quest 11s this fall. There's no shortage of awesome RPGs out there in my mind. Another Fire Emblem is on it's way, Trails of cold steel 1/2 are great and I'm pretty sure 3 will be good too, great availability of all the classics (baldurs gate on consoles soon!!). I tend to jump around and play stuff from all eras, only finish like 1/2 a dozen a year though.

It's a good time for RPGs.

Yeah no doubt. I get freaked out sometimes cause I feel like I want to play so many and there just isn't time. RPG players have an embarrassment of riches, and so many of them are like 60-80 hours long, which is great but other games pile up in the meantime.

Also when something really exciting new comes, I always drop what I was playing. Like I dropped Etrian Odyssey Nexus because ToCS showed up...even though I was really enjoying it....and now I fear I will never get back with Persona Q2 and TOCS 2 coming in early June.

I'm actually relieved that Imperator came out broken and sucky, so I can wait on that until it is fixed and has an expansion.

Lost Odyssey and Resonance of Fate. Before those, the Shadow Hearts and Xenosaga series held the title. I think the next great one will be Cyberpunk 2077 or Granblue Fantasy Project Re: Link. Maybe Persona 5 once I rip off the plastic and play it.

Horizon Zero Dawn, although you could argue it's not an RPG because of limited choice/consequence and an upgrade path that all ends in the same place. It felt enough like an RPG to me while playing it, so that's what I consider it.

Currently playing a ton of Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen on Switch. I'd never heard of the game before, but am already at 95 hours in 3 weeks since purchasing it. Basically, its a single player, 3rd person RPG that feels like a cross between Skyrim and Dark Souls. Some of the monsters are huge, combat can be very active, magic is quite interesting, and archery rules. But probably the most interesting part is the pawn system. As I said, it's a single player game, but you create and design your personal Pawn who fights alongside you. Your pawn can be used by other players, just as you bring other's pawns into your world to earn "Rift Crystals" that you use for some purchases and purifying armors later in the game. It's a lot of fun. The online community is great (GameFAQs has an active pawn sharing community).

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I'd have to mirror what everyone else is saying: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was the last true masterpiece of an RPG that I played. It even went so far as to re-awaken my love for Anime-style JRPGs that I've kinda ignored for the past couple of console generations. Now I'm replaying a lot of stuff that I skipped over, and I'm really enjoying them. Also, don't skip out on the Torna: The Golden Country DLC which is a massive prequel story that itself is another 25-30 hour adventure.

Octopath Traveler gets a solid mention as well, the game was an amazing experience that had a lot of variety. The battle system was top notch and the music is some of the best I've heard in a while.

I also just finished Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition - the first Tales game I've ever completed. I don't know if I would call it "truly great" but it's a high quality RPG and definitely worthy of your time if you're a fan of the genre. Bonus points since it meets OPs requirements of being in a (kinda) medieval setting.

The next one? Probably Granblue Fantasy Project Re:Link or YS IX, maybe Final Fantasy VII Remake depending on when it's released.

The last remarkably brilliant role playing game i've played, and am currently replaying is The Witcher 3: GOTY Edition. It has earned a place on my list of the greatest video games i've ever experienced. The next one may be Cyberpunk.

I'm interested in Octopath Traveler as well as far as role playing games are concerned, i'm fairly excited to experience it once its released on Steam in a couple of weeks.

Final fantasy 12 remaster. Oh for newer games, kingdom come deliverance and vampyr were amazing to me.

I also loved technomancer. Yeah it had backtracking issues but I loved the action rpg style and conversation system and loot. Reminded me of old school style console rpgs like kotor. Underrated if you ask me.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance, still can't wait for the last DLC coming out soon for a full playthrough

Now I am playing Nier Automata and it is both amazing and horrible, but I am having fun so far

Man people were so hard on dragon's dogma when it initially came out. It had flaws sure but it resonated with me far more than skyrim. Hopefully capcom is listening to all the praises I hear about the game every time it's brought up these days.

The problem with the Witcher 3 is that after you played the Witcher 3 no other game is the Witcher 3 so nothing will be as good...

It's been just long enough that I started a new playthrough with heavy modding this week. In between my launch playthrough and now, I also read through the entire book series. So it feels like a new game again with way more understanding of the world context, it's amazing.

ARPG: I don't know if Sekiro counts, otherwise Breath of the Wild or Dark Souls 3.
JRPG (not action-RPG): FF9 was the last great one I played.
WRPG: Mass Effect 2, if it counts.

Since then I played older games that I loved, but those are the most recently released ones I actually enjoyed.

I still like action-RPGs, but the other types of RPGs are having a worse and worse time convincing me. I don't know if it's me or the genre that got bad.

I still need to finish dq11. I started playing while I was playing dq7 on 3ds (need to finish that too), and got dq'd out. Was playing dq heroes 2 before them. I'm thinking of waiting to rebuy dq11 on switch, as it's got extra content, but their are other games I will buy on that like the new fire emblem and dq builders 2.

I still need to beat divinity1 as well. I got to the forest town with the weird cult and stopped. Fun game. I have divinity2 still unopened as I don't want to play until I beat part 1.

Does anyone else have rhe problem of starting games and not finishing them? Its worse too as I will get close to beating stop playing for something else and forget where I am so I say screw it and restart the games. Last full game I beat, rpg wise was technomancer, and deus ex hr before that. I don't have the issue with shorter games like resident evil 2.

Too many games, not enough time. I guess now that I am separated and in a divorce that problem will fix itself somewhat. No more, going to x event or out to eat unless I want too. Sure lack of sex sucks, but will be nice playing an rpg and not get berated for it. "you should be doing something more constructive" as she sits on the couch Facebooking and gossiping with other busibody middle aged women. Man now that I look more at it, this is all a good thing.

The switch is compounding the problem. I thought the vita/3ds was bad(still have those to play too), but the switch porting old full jrpgs and having full new ones isn't helping.

Here is what I started but haven't finished:
Dq11, 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 (started all only beat dw1 in 1989 lol)
Dq heroes2
Divinity 1
Ff12, ff10, 15,13 (beat all the rest but have never played ff9)
VAMPYR
Kingdom come deliverance
Witcher 2 and 3 (finished the 1st one)
Mass effect 2 and 3 (finished 1st)
Valkyria chronicles 1, 2 and 4
Wasteland 2
Pillars of eternity
Dark souls 1,2,3 (finished bb and demons s)
Persona 1,2,3,4,5 (own and started all of them)
Fallout 4, new vegas
Dragon age inquisition (beat origins)
Titan quest
Grim dawn
Tales of xillia, symphonic, graces f, vesperia
Ys 8, Celestia (beat 7, 1 and oath)

That's a short list of only rpgs. Throw in older games on pc/ps2/ps1 and psp/ds, classics and other genres besides rpgs. I could not buy another game and never run out of games.

i have fought this battle. Hours of my special lady browsing Facebook and Instagram go unremarked on by me, but I always hear about it if she comes in while I'm playing ESO. She really loathed JRPGs, I just started playing those on portables to.avoid unpleasantness.

enjoy some time to yourself, take advantage, and then get back out there when you're ready.

It’s been a minute since I’ve played a RPG. I started DQVII on my 3DS but I haven’t completed it. I’m not really being drawn in to it.

I mostly played RPG’s last gen, Tales of Vesperia, Blue Dragon, and Lost Odyssey. This gen I don’t think I’ve played any.

Back to the original question...honestly I’m gonna have to go with Final Fantasy X. It was an experience I thoroughly enjoyed all around.

Unpopular opinion, but I actually liked FF XIII as well, but X just really stuck with me more. IX is my favorite RPG ever, but that’s crazy that the last GREAT RPG I played was from 2001.

I don’t count Dragon Age Inquisition as an RPG, otherwise I could use that game. Next great game? Spirits I hope FFXVI captures that magic that I used to feel playing PS1-era FF.
