New Moderation Transparency - Ban History Page

BANGS

He took that too personally with the locking lol
He literally locked it right after his first reply, opened it back up for some strange reason, then locked it again. In a topic that's not in the least bit inappropriate or inflammatory or anything. Sounds like the claim is definitely false and he wants to do a cover up mission instead of just admitting it? I mean, didn't he learn his lesson last time?

I'm pretty sure even gamefaqs is more active than this place nowadays... but I don't know for sure, hence why I'd like to discuss the metrics...

To be fair it is a pretty standard marketing tag line that many companies use when promoting their product. I doubt most of them have much more than made up metrics to justify their claims.

I'm all about moderation transparency. I'd like to see a similar tool for locked topics. Sometimes that shit just seems unnecessary and sketchy af... EL having a bad morning I guess...

I wouldn't mind knowing the answer to the question what is true about the 2006 metric, but you wrapped that question up in a bigger loaded question which really sealed the deal.

He took that too personally with the locking lol
I don't see what's so funny in a rather unclever attempt to have a talk about something this place is actively trying to stop talking over considering it is history and the resultant lessons have already been noted and (as we speak) applied to the site.

Being the equivalent of ''Hey, but what about that time that X happened'' and presenting it in such a way that you essentially are the rooster in a gun fight is basically pretending to Goliath that David's balls are bigger than his.

It might work in the fairytale, but on GAF Goliath always wins. That's why this forum is called GAF (Goliath As Fuck) and not DAF because that sounds strange and moronic.

Just like that thread of BANGS was.

Considering you don't post like this i have to assume that someone took over your NPC unit.

In the offset that it was a geniune post: I heard that ''How not to be a Dick online for Dummies'' is on sale. Treat yourself a nice Christmas present, now you have the time! :)

All that complaining about lack of activity, yet you could have just asked Elon Musky_Cheese Musky_Cheese what you could do for this place, or be on the Discord.

In the end you decided neither, but figured a good ole account suicide was a better tool to work with. Such a shame, and not like you at all.

I would say that I feel sorry for BANGS, but the dude was clearly trying to instigate shit.
That it definitely was, and poorly too. In the end BANGS got hit by the Evil's Lore spell and is now forever condemned to the Forest of the Beard.

Strange... that topic of his came out of nowhere but given his post history, Bangs isn't the kind to instigate malicious stuff.
That is why i am so confused over this. It was a totally random thread with a loaded question out of nowhere, which really isn't BANGS's playground.

Its not upon the community to decide, but there might be more to this than just a boring account suicide.

Good idea. Why does the ban list often lack a link to the offending post?
Because its usually not a specific post that triggers a ban, but a more global search in posting behavior. This was addressed by the staff not too long ago.

I see this a lot too. What does that refer to?
There are apparently blanco users that circumvent the system.

I do know that this was taken care of but i keep seeing this on the Ban Page, so i assume its a problem that is difficult to tackle, perhaps?

Since we've opened the forum up to allow anonymous emails (like gmail, outlook.com, etc) rather than just "professional emails", we've seen a rise in forum spam. We have software that can detect most of these, but occasionally a spam bot makes it through and starts posting. We have a tool that, once identified, will delete all of that user's messages and ban them with that canned response.

In the name of honesty, I really don't think BANGS did anything wrong and wondered the same thing myself. If the numbers support that claim, then his question should've been answered easily. If the numbers don't support that claim, then it shouldn't be posted on the website. I guess "leading community' is a pretty vague description, but still...putting a lie on the front page sort of flies in the face of all the effort that's being done to make this a better place.

I mean surely there are other ways to describe this site in a positive way. It's maybe the most "storied" or "influential" gaming community of all-time, but right now it's not the most active forum and that's OK. We're building things back up.

Maybe he was banned for like a day and I'm taking things too seriously, I don't know.

Also, if we're being candid about forum activity, it seems to me that ResetERA's popularity is decreasing, with the number of threads being posted in "A moment ago" steadily decreasing, and at certain times of the day having that number approach the corresponding number for this website. This also might be happening because activity here is steadily increasing as well. However, it seems that GameFAQs is a force of trolling and disproportionate Nintendo fandom that cannot be contended with in terms of activity.

I respect your opinion, as does anyone else.

I, on the other hand, read it as instigation and posting with intent. The response afterward was also not cool IMO. But we're both entitled!

Also, it was bound to happen. That place is not friendly.

He could have just PM’d Evilore with his question. Not sure why he made a thread or what he was hoping to achieve. It appears like he was trying to stir the pot. Play with fire, get burnt.

What happened to little mustard boy? He was cool initially but then the lack of bubble wrap gradually wore him down to the point where he started malfunctioning and blatantly trolling. Hadn’t seen him post for at least a few weeks before the ban today.

Did a guy just get banned for saying he pirates EA games?

I pirate literally everything at the moment because of all these different services for movies, games and music.

You can have Amazon Prime, Netflix and a Satelitte TV subscription and you still wouldn't have access to all the TV shows or Movies you want. Yet I can go to a streaming site or get a torrent for any movie ever released in theatres or direct to video.

For games it is a case by case basis. EA? I don't trust the game to be supported for more than 3 months so I'll pirate it. CDProjektRed? I'm day one special edition because I know I'm getting a good base game with inevitably wonderful DLC for the next 18-24months.

Getting banned over pirating EA games? :pie_roffles: Do we have a "do you pirate" thread? :pie_thinking::pie_zipper:
No, admitting the pirating of anything will generally get you moderated if noticed.

A "do you have pirate?" thread would just be a honeypot for the rule ignorant.

No, for admitting to pirating things in general, not just EA.

And yes, admittance to that is punishable.

Me, an intellectual however, only pirates when it is appropiate. Whenever i hear The Theme of Jack Sparrow, for instance. That always gets my inner ARRR going on.

Evening folks, regarding hargwood hargwood - In light of another posters input, we have reviewed the ban down to one week. Talking about the economy of piracy, copyright or game preservation is fine. Going into a thread brazenly announcing you pirate everything is not (and never has been). We think this is a pragmatic compromise. The original ban was meant to lay down the zero tolerance nature of the site policy, but in hindsight it was overly harsh. However, it's important to lay down some sort of marker to prevent the infection of 'warez', 'day0' etc. seeping into general acceptance. We're not naive, but equally we're not advocates.

We acknowledge that the policy is out of date along with the ToS and we need to update them. The ban has been reduced from one month to one week and hopefully hargwood hargwood has a bit more tact and is not so open about dropping anchor in Pirate Bay in the future.

I’ve asked this before, but never really gotten an answer, so I’m going to ask this ask again.

Why is thread banning not as throughly used as it should be? It seems to be the best thing this forum has done but is barely utilized,

It seems to me this is the best way to try to moderate people without having to ban them full stop. If they want to shit up Xbox/Sony/Nintendo threads, just ban them from those and if they choose not to correct, then a site ban might be worth looking into.

It feels like an under utilized tool in your box of tools.

It's used regularly.

I’d rather we didn’t celebrate people’s bans.

Indeed. Every ban is a failure in some ways, that as a community we couldn't find a way to integrate that person, or that we attracted a person too abhorrent. AngularSaxophone was odd, and yeah that post was just not something you can easily ignore, but up til then I hadn't thought him necessarily evil, just odd.

Clinging particularly strongly to unfounded conspiracy theories, making up your own justifications for them, constantly, is indicative of a very serious mental issue that lends itself very strongly to support of ideas such as rejection or diminishing of the holocaust. It of course need not manifest in that way, but when someone spends most of their time with spreading outrageous conspiracy theories that defy all rationality, it is hurtful to discussions, because discussions quickly shift to said worthless conspiracy theories and takes an aggressive turn. Of course it would be preferrable to lead people on a path of critical thinking, but a forum rarely is a good place to achieve that in cases where self-sustaining mythical and counter-factual world views are well-established.

And by the way, I do not insinuate evil motives in Angular Saxophone with his recent denial of (extend of) holocaust and slavery, but evil motives are not always necessary to do harm.

Yoshi Yoshi - I may not have seen all of his posts so it's possible there's stuff I missed - the flat earth thread I just skimmed it to gather a nutter list so I knew not to put too much effort into debating those guys (as you observe it's bloody hard to lead someone to a place of critical thinking from that particular location). I had hoped a couple of times to have some useful discussions around the bible (as one often can with catholic gamer chap) as while I'm not religious it is academically fascinating to me, because of everything that came up around it, but sadly it was not to be.
