Red Dead Online
Systems:
Xbox One (X), Playstation 4 (Pro)
Developer: Rockstar Studios
Punlisher: Rockstar Games
Release Date: Out Now
Status: Beta
Website: https://www.rockstargames.com/reddeadredemption2/online
Feedback: reddeadonline.com/feedback
Support Site: https://support.rockstargames.com/

The Red Dead Online Beta is now officially open to everyone with a copy of Red Dead Redemption 2. Choose to make your mark as either a gunslinger or an outlaw. Join or form posses, battle enemy gangs, hunt, fish and search for treasure, challenge other settlers and much more in this brand new multiplayer story.

ACROSS THE FIVE STATES

The world of Red Dead Online will be a continually expanding experience. There will also be some additions and updates throughout the Beta period. Starting this week, you can ride with friends in a Posse, set up your Camp, embark on cooperative story-based missions or go head-to-head in competitive series, find strangers throughout the world to help (or hurt), tackle spontaneous Free Roam challenges, go hunting, fishing, bond with your horse, explore with friends or on your own (but look out for ambushes), and much more.

All the while, you’ll accumulate XP through your explorations and encounters that counts towards your rank and provides added bonuses. Unlock items and improve your attributes while you progress. You can also take on Award challenges throughout your open-world experiences to earn Awards in 12 categories like combat, hunting, sharpshooter and survivalist.

Red Dead Online begins with creating your character. Detail your appearance and attributes before you set out on your journey from Sisika Penitentiary where you’ll acquire a horse, set up a Camp, hunt down a treasure, equip your first Ability Card and meet some fateful characters with a larger story to tell; one that involves chasing truth, revenge, and honor.

HONOR AND OUTLAWS

In Red Dead Online, your honor will shift high and low based on your decisions and behavior. You’ll shape your honor through your choices: from life or death decisions to natural interactions such as caring for your horse.

In addition to the world responding to you in subtly different ways, you’ll also notice the nature of certain missions will reveal themselves to you based on your current honor state.

Free Roam Missions
Head over to the Stranger icons throughout the map alone or with your Posse to embark on Free Roam Missions. You’ll see some familiar faces along the way, and these missions can vary based on how noble or nefarious you are – for example, an honorable gunslinger may be asked to help escort a convoy, defending it from attacking gangs or even other players’ Posses, whereas a dishonorable outlaw may be asked to help spring a felon from the law.

A Land of Opportunities
Honor also plays into this deeper cooperative strand for two to four players that we will continually build upon. In A Land of Opportunities, you’ll be faced with a multi-part series of missions, with some parts changing as your honor changes on a larger journey to seek truth and justice, or revenge.

Competition and showdown series

Of course, Red Dead Online comes packed with all new competitive game play. The Beta includes 5 new modes at launch that are part of a larger series of Showdowns, and you can also enter your trusted steed into races including point-to-point, lap and open races strewn across the map.
Enter one of the Showdown Series Markers for fast matchmaking into a variety of modes:

Shootout & Team Shootout
Classic gunfight modes with unlimited lives. Compete to rack up the most kills before the timer runs out. Sudden death will trigger in the event of a tie: whoever gets the first kill wins.

Make it Count
A true test of resourcefulness in two game modes: use nothing but a bow and a handful of arrows or throwing knives to be the last one standing. With a gradually shrinking player area, there’s nowhere to run.

Most Wanted
A tactical race to the top. Every kill pushes you up the scoreboard, but watch out: the closer to the top you are, the more points everyone else gets for killing you.

Hostile Territory
Work in teams to control the land. Capture a territory to start racking up points: the team with most points wins - or you can win outright by capturing every territory.

Name your Weapon
Demonstrate your personal specialty in this free-for-all or team based match: the trickier the weapon you use to land the killing blow, the more points you get.

Red Dead Online Beta Update Out Now

Today, the Red Dead Online Beta gets its first big batch of updates including new gameplay, weapons and clothing, additional balancing and a slew of community-requested improvements thanks to responses to our player feedback page. The update is live in-game now - see below for details.

uAy1M9U.png

Earn Gold Nuggets and XP for completing Daily Challenges, a new series of wide-ranging objectives covering everything from skinning animals to finding treasure, winning feuds and more. Pull up the Player Menu to see your 7 Daily Challenges that will rotate each day, each challenge earns Gold Nuggets and XP and completing all 7 earns you a bonus.

Starting next week, compete with rival teams and Posses in the new Free Roam Event Fool’s Gold, where players fight to wear a protective suit of Golden Armor. Take down the current wearer to earn the armor and points, then turn the tables and rack up kills against the opposition.

And looking ahead, new game modes will arrive in the Red Dead Online Beta each week. Put your highwayman skills to the test with Target Races as you race other players on horseback to take down targets with speed and accuracy. Proficiency with a bow and arrow will give you an edge, take advantage of weapon and horse stamina pickups where you can, use your limited bullets wisely to remove targets or attack your competition.

Take on friends and rivals in new Fishing Challenges. Opt in to a challenge to receive the appropriate equipment and bait, head to the water’s edge and start reeling in the big ones. For added ease, use Eagle Eye to pick a spot full of fish. Remember, you’re trying to catch the highest total weight of fish to win – which could be achieved by hooking several smaller fish or angling for one large catch - so keep everything you reel in.

Also coming soon: three new Showdown Modes where players and teams compete to capture and deliver bags, steal loot from each other and survive. Stay tuned for more details around Up in Smoke, Spoils of War and Plunder. With the addition of these new modes also comes the Featured Series blip - visit the Featured Series sign post or select the option from the Quick Join menu to play the latest modes.

The Rare Shotgun is a beautifully engraved, faded brass version of the powerful, double-barreled longarm and is available today. Coming soon, be sure to get your hands on the Evans Repeater - a high grade, high capacity rifle that is devastating at medium and long range. Both weapons will be available via the Wheeler, Rawson & Co. Catalogue and from local Gunsmiths.

mVWuqCa.png

Treat yourself to a range of new Outfits, Boots, Coats, Gloves, Hats, Vests and more. In addition to all the clothing that will be available for purchase at your leisure, keep an eye on the shops and the Catalogue for Limited Time items that will come and go each week.

Express yourself with a new set of emotes including new reactions, greets and taunts. Like all Emotes, you can tap once for the standard emote and double tap for a more exaggerated expression. You can find new Emotes in the Wheeler & Rawson Catalogue then add them to your Emote Wheel through the Emote Wheel Management menu.

Updated Player Radar and Visibility: We’ve reduced the visibility of players blips over longer distances, so now your location won’t display to other players unless you are nearby – minimizing the likelihood of being targeted across the map by more aggressive competitors. This includes limiting voice chat to near proximity rather than players from across the map. Overly aggressive players will be highlighted from the map with a progressively darkening dot. If your style of play becomes more hostile, your map position (including your Posse members) will become darker and visible from further away.

Easier Parley and Feuds: Turn quarrels with other players into timed mini-deathmatches with easier to trigger Feuds, which can be initiated against a rival and their Posse after one kill. Alternately, instigate a temporary truce quicker after one kill with similar updates to the Parley system.

Enhanced Law and Bounty System: If you stir up enough trouble to earn a high bounty, you’ll increase the chance that a cadre of NPC Bounty Hunters will be out to get you. The higher the bounty gets, the more persistent your pursuers will become… so watch out!

Please keep the feedback coming as these new features arrive each week. In addition to new content, stay tuned for new weekly bonuses such as this week’s care package to help you tackle Daily Challenges and your other ongoing adventures across the five states. Head into the Red Dead Online Beta any time before Tuesday March 5th to receive a complimentary delivery of goods at your Camp’s Lockbox or at the Post Office consisting of:
  • 2x Potent Snake Oil
  • 2x Potent Bitters
  • 2x Potent Miracle Tonic
  • 2x Horse Reviver
  • 2x Potent Horse Stimulant
  • 8x Poison Arrows
  • 10x Explosive Slug
ur0hLdl.png

Starting today, PlayStation 4 players will have early access to the Jawbone Knife, a unique melee weapon with a handle artfully carved from the remains of a slain animal’s jaw, as well as a range of new clothing options and three new emotes. In the coming weeks, PlayStation 4 players will get the Special Series that launches them directly into the latest early access mode starting with Open Target Races where you compete in an open space to take out the most targets on horseback.

Stay tuned each week for new content, bonuses, limited time clothing and more coming in and out of the Red Dead Online Beta and keep an eye out for more updates as we continue improving and growing the world of Red Dead Online.

Great thread. Been meaning to check this out but all the negative stuff turned me off. 15 gold bars seems a high reward just for playing a beta. Especially when the economy was only giving 0.3 out per 4 hours or summat daft?

Were not gonna dive in and be way behind the beta players are we?

It took about 8 hours to earn a gold bar under the old rate, so 15 is a decent amount. $250 is a fair bit as well.

I'm on ps4 myself but I'm getting the itch for a X1X and if I get one I will definitely double dip on this. Really need a piece of that sweet GAF posse too.
As soon as I can I’ll form a PS4 Gaf posse. I think however it starts as 4 members and can only be max of 8. So we may need more than one posse. Fill up the first posse... first tho.

The posse system seems a little weird. I get that it's supposed to be more tight knit like a gang in the old west would be but having larger groups would make it much easier for groups to get together. I feel bad because I can't be a daily player and this type of system seems to punish inactivity.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Perhaps changes will be made. Because *drum roll* it’s still in Beta.

Or is Posse’s working same way as Crew’s?

I am totally clueless on it. I remember hearing there can be a permanent posse and then temp posses during game sessions. I am mostly a single player guy and I have always found Rockstar's online settings to be some of the most convoluted. I usually don't bother but I REALLY want to be an online cowboy!

EDIT: I played a bit more last night and did a stranger mission. I faced no griefing. Exposure therapy seems to be working. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Permanent posse cost a user $200. I’ll grind and get that done if no one else will.

I also want to be an online cowboy.

I have like $96 currently. I want to get a second stall so I can claim my free arabian from the UE but that costs $100. I don't want to ditch My First Horsey (that's his name) because, well he's my first. Not sure if they can be sold either. I'd sell it if the price was right I'm sure. I'd be glad to pay too if I happen to get there first. I doubt I will though.

My PSN is dfoz3. I'll be playing a bit this weekend I'm sure. Let me know if you want to connect. If anything I will jump in this thread when I get online to see if anyone wants to join.

I believe you can sell the first horse you get from the horse theft mission. I named mine El Guapo.

I am the same way, I did not sell my first one (Esteban) in the single player, even after breaking the white Arabian, and I will probably do the same online when I have enough cash for the stable to claim the DLC one.

Accepted. What time zone are you in? I'm Pacific time here. I will try to be on at the same time. Two heads are definitely better than one when trying to figure out how all this works.

I went to the stable but I didn't see an option to sell. Then again I am thinking I need to take horses to a fence or something instead. Like, the guys we took them to to begin with. I guess I need to track them down. I need to spend more time at work researching RD Online and less reading Politics threads. ;)

I’m East coast but I will stay up for west coast time cowboying.

I have not checked since I made a new character last night after deleting my original (since I did not realize you can fine tune facial features until after), so I did not get far enough to see, and R* pulled the plug on the server.

But, I am going by a buddy of mine who was much further along and messaged me this morning not to forget to sell the starter horse (you can in free roam after first story mission at a stable he said) if I want to claim the DLC ones. Mentioned the $100 upgrade if I want to keep starter as well.

Edit: He said you do not get any money for the starter horse, so it is just like a disband.

I played for about 6 hours yesterday mostly messing around aimlessly. Upgraded my two starting guns and bought lots of horse beets. Gonna try to approach play sessions with a plan moving forward. Today I’m gonna grind to unlock second stable slot and try to get at least 100 bucks toward a new horse. Go step by step from there. After second horse probably save for pump action shotty, then get a nice outfit

The character creator could use some work I think. Why are most character creators so terrible? I spent like half an hour trying to get a decent looking face and couldn't manage it.

I'm starting to think I am going to sell My First Horsey and save the hundo for something else. I have an Arabian waiting for me to claim him/her from the UE purchase. I guess I will never know the gender since I don't have Arthur's voice to let me know.

Eventually I will want multiple horses but I think I want to get some good steel first.

I really should be watching some youtube videos about RDROnline tips. Has anybody seen any good ones?

It's the main reason I've been playing the game.

I never checked for myself. Haven't been back to a cold area since the tusnowiral.

It could possibly be placebo but,

When you arrive to the first makeshift camp in the snow at the beginning of the game, I looked on purpose because of the forum/internets hyping the horse balls and dynamic poop. I noticed they seemed to be tucked high and tight, so I could not get the best angle on them with the camera. Then I remember seeing them swing like the breeze after you come down the mountain, something I did not notice before, so I assumed that was modeled in and was kind of floored at the realism, lol.

I will report back with my field study this evening!

Make sure to use the binoculars to get a really good look lol

I can't decide what sidearms I want to use. Having to actually think about what I should upgrade is so different from SP where I just dumped money into everything.

I couldn’t find the single player OT so I’m just gonna post this here.

During the mission where
Arthur gets kidnapped by the O’Driscolls
I heard one of the NPCs say “I don’t wanna be here when the law comes for that side of beef”. Anyone else notice this? It’s a pretty well known meme that Trump fans use to mock Hillary for when she passed out and was dragged into the van during the campaign.

I remember that saying, but I do not remember that meme.

Is the saying also a historical phrase for the time period, maybe co-opted from the south in the US for use in the meme?

No idea mate. Thought it might’ve been a subtle reference from the devs.

A few general guides for RDO are starting to appear.

Kotaku: Tips For Playing Red Dead Online

I'm not going to post all the tips but these two will be of interest for anyone that hasn't started playing RDO yet.

You Don't Need To Have Finished Red Dead Redemption II Before Jumping Into Red Dead Online

Some players might worry about RDO spoiling Red Dead Redemption II's narrative or that the online narrative will be confusing without finishing the main game. Red Dead Online is a prequel to the main game, though it's not entirely clear how early. Random characters you encounter won't be dropping major spoilers about the end of RDR2. Random players might, though, so be careful.

But You Should Play SOME Red Dead Redemption II Before Jumping In

Spending some time in RDR2 will help you out tremendously in Red Dead Online. While RDO has a tutorial, it isn't as in-depth or detailed as the tutorials in RDR2. The controls in RDR2 and RDO can take some time to get the hang of, and practising them in single-player is a good idea.

There are also a lot of systems to manage, like warmth, hunger and cleaning guns. Red Dead Online uses all of these systems, so learning how they work in single-player is highly advised.

The online is the grind. It has nothing else to offer. Its whats left of RDR2 when you remove the camp, random encounters and NPC greetings (sure was easy to strip the game of anything interesting huh...).

Either you are playing online because you get pleasure out of grinding the right to use the stuff you already played with in single player (with the endgame of ???) or you don't like the online so you skip the "gameplay" with gold bar purchases but then what the fuck are you doing, moron?
