'Sonic the Hedgehog' Movie Races to Paramount

Link.

Paramount Pictures raced to nab the movie rights to Sonic the Hedgehog, the popular SEGA videogame franchise.

Neal H. Moritz, whose Original Film banner recently signed an upcoming first look deal with Paramount, will produce the project, which is coming to the studio after Sony Entertainment put it into turnaround.

Much of the team that was developing it at Sony remains: in addition to Moritz, Deadpool director Tim Miller is executive producing, while his longtime Blur Studio collaborator Jeff Fowler will make his feature directorial debut on the film. Also executive producing is Toby Ascher, while Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons will serve as co-producers.

Sonic the Hedgehog centers on Sonic and his friends, such as Tails and Knuckles, who run around collecting items and points as they attempt to foil the global domination plans of Doctor Eggman Robotnik. The game was first released by SEGA in 1991, with the character becoming one of the world’s biggest gaming icons. More than 360 million copies, including both packaged and digital games, have been sold on various platforms.

The studio plans on making a movie that will blend live action and CGI animation as it brings Sonic to the big screen for the first time.

Fowler previously wrote and directed the 2005 Academy Award-nominated best animated short, the animal-centric Gopher Broke, which Miller executive produced.

A glossy $80 million animation would make sense but a live-action hybrid? Fuck outta here. Then again I'm not actually convinced this will get made.

Ehhhhhhhhh. Based on how Sonic + Human characters has worked out in the games, I'll probably steer clear of this. Will be curious to watch a trailer when it hits, but the thing would have to be pretty fire to get me back on board.

Aiii

So not worth it
Can we not do this? I would be in favor of just not doing this movie at all, can we make that happen?

They're picking up something Sony dropped?

Paramount has been releasing flop after flop for years now. They will jump on anything with even the slightest chance of making some money.

The one thing they had going for them was that contract with J.J Abrams but even he is leaving them for Disney for at least a couple of years.

Because if there's one thing that people loved about Sonic it was Elise and CHRIS FUCKIN THORNDYKE!!!

Perfect. I nominate Megan Fox for Princess Elise. Make it NC-17. We need all the edge.

Also: Sonic Cinematic Universe. Let's destroy all that is decent and good. With a Shadow the Hedgehog movie.

DAMN.

Should have been Dreamworks. Then we'd be one step closer to the Sonic/Shrek Cinematic Universe.

Another bomb for Paramount. Now their picking-up Sony's sloppy seconds too. Sonic The Hedgehog isn't gonna be successful enough as a feature length film, I'd say.

Meaning that there could be a 1% chance of it being good rather than a 0% had it been with Sony.

Now if we can get Mario out of Sony's hand then we're good.

Now that's not fair. Baby Driver is arguably better than any movie Paramount made this year, and that was a full Sony production.
