Resident Evil 4 HD Project - Progress Thread

I need to download this.
Has there been any attempt to contact capcom, in hope that they will consider using it for official use? Hopefully with some compensation to the guys that worked on it.

This is not a marginal upgrade of textures no matter how you want to sell it. This is amazing work.

Will this ever see the light of day? It looks amazing and this is one of my favorite games of all time, but I'm afraid I'll never get to enjoy this version.

The whole thing should be done in about 6 months.

What are the odds of remastering the textures for REMake? The dimwits at Capcom thought it was not worth it for the best game in the franchise but for RE Zero, which is the worst of the old school ones.

Not asking to Chris and Albert specifically but... is that even possible considering these are pre rendered backgrounds?

It's speculated that they had the source images for RE0 on hand still, so that's why they were able to include such hi-res backdrops.

For REmaster they would likely have had to remodel every scene from scratch for new backdrops, which would be a colossal effort

Which the REmaster team DID do for specific areas that were animation-heavy (ei outdoor areas with grass and leaves in the wind)

Example:

Code:

I fucking WISH the rest of REmaster looked this crisp, instead of the garbley-upscaled mess it is =/

Sorry for the offtopic

...Have you been following this thread? They're redoing not just the textures but models, effects, and a lot of glitch correction all over the place. How could you possibly consider this a marginal improvement?

Again, read what i wrote.
It's marginal in the sense that is not a full on remake (remake as in RE1 to REmake).
I even specified their work is colossal, for an HD mod.

These are two guys doing it on their own free time, though, and even in between jobs. It's really not fair to compare their effort to a developer with a full-time staff dedicated to it.

Someone would have to recreate the backgrounds in a higher resolution from scratch. I don't see that happening.

Oh i know..im just saying most devs cant offset things like this and pay attention to every detail. Its why modders can do things like this. They are doing it for free without a budget in mind.

About the only thing keeping this from being a remake on the scale of something like Ocarina of Time 3D is having a revamped lighting engine. I get what you're saying, it's not a full on remake with entirely new models and effects, but there's still no way that the improvement could be called marginal. And I would argue that RE4 still looks good enough in terms of its models and effects that it doesn't really need the kind of full on remake you're talking about anyway. After this mod, ambient occlusion is the only other thing I'd still be wanting for.

There must be some values on the scale between "marginal" and "full remake," right?
Yes, but my original point wasnt to determine the value of this mod (again, clearly astonishing) but whether or not Capcom would feel compelled to use it as an excuse to resell the HD version AGAIN, especially on console.
Which i think is more debatable.

Ofcourse i wish cris and the rest of the team the best of luck and they would clearly deserve it if it did happen.

Any plans in using realistic sounds on the real-life weapons or remain as is?
Currently the weapon sounds are outside the scope of the project.

If anything it should be "Albert and the rest of the team" haha. He's been pouring in many more hours than me for the last few months, and he's the one who figured out how to correct / adjust the lighting and effects. :) And thank you!

Sorry Albert, it's just that you were the last person who had posted, and i had your user name fresh in my head, while typing. :p

So I guess character textures and models are saved for last?

What else can be done to improve the graphics? Per object motion blur would be cool as a toggle, but that's probably a DX10 or newer type of effect.

The only thing that comes to mind is a single example: the rifle animation that's trapped at 30fps. I have no idea if they'd be able to fix it though.

Ambient occlusion would be rad, once upon a time someone did a bit of work on getting hbao it to work through gedosato, but I don't know if that ended up going anywhere.

Maybe there's a way to import the weapon animations into an animation software and interpolate the missing frames?

Durante needs to team up with these guys and implement HBAO, motion blur, depth of field and other goodies. I know some posters don't care for all these effects, but I find them very pleasing when done right.

Everyone should care about ambient occlusion. As long as it's implemented well it would really enhance this type of game in a clear and uncontroversial way. The rest I think are a matter of taste. Hopefully this mod will inspire people to look harder into what enhancements are possible than they did at release.

Just to make sure, does ambient occlusion not work with Reshade and MXAO? I don't have the game installed to try it. I know it depends on the depth buffer access the game provides.

We are working through the game in the following order:

– Environmental Textures
– Items and Weapons
– Enemies, NPCs, Playable Characters, Misc.
– Mercenaries, Separate Ways, and anything not covered above

While this is not set in stone (e.g. Albert has been dipping into the Mercenaries levels a bit), this is the general approach. More info can be found at the FAQ for the project: http://www.re4hd.com/?page_id=104

Currently the other items mentioned are beyond our scope, but never say never. :)

I have no idea what I'm talking about.

This needs to happen. It's easily the biggest blemish on the game.

And yeah, I don't know if it's even possible for someone other than the developer to handle.

I have never played this game. Only a small part of it at a friends house. I've been waiting for this project for years, it looks so impressive, I'll gladly wait to play this version!

Hello!

I'm more hyped for this mod to be complete than I am for the release of any upcoming games, and considering I'm also a huge Yakuza fan that statement should illustrate just how much I'm loving this mod. Outstanding work that I would gladly support financially if I could. Speaking of which, is there a place I can donate to the project creators at all?

There's a donate link at www.re4hd.com, which may also get you earlier access to the next release if they're still doing that.

Looks great. I agree with the comment from your site about the skybox moving too quickly, but it's cool that it moves now. It looks like some of the character clothing textures have been redone? Have you already begun addressing characters?

Alright I'm downloading RE4 and testing MXAO with it. If it works well this game is gonna look god damn pristine.

This thread and the "$10 PSN card for $7" thread are my two favorite threads to see on the first page since I know they were bumped with good news. Looking forward to finally playing RE4 on PC once this is finished.

I'm in for 5 bucks at least when it is done. I don't plan on playing it for a while though. They can take their sweet time.

I'm not sure if this has been answered or not, but will this mod improve the audio issues with this version? This and the PS4/XO version (and I think even the 360/PS3 versions) had worse quality audio and terrible positional audio, so if this mod (or some other mod) fixes those issues then it'll be all the more reason to get excited.

Probably stupid question, but do you need to be at the area of the demo in order to access it? What I mean is I just downloaded Re4 on Steam and installed the Castle release. Since I just installed the game I don't have a save at the castle, should the mod give me the option to start there? Did I fuck something up? Probably.

Nah. The mod doesn’t provide any save files.

So I have to be at the part in the game in order to see the changes?

Not trying to sound like a dick, I am just out of the loop. I really wanted to avoid replaying this game for the 20th time till this mod was released, but I just got my PC back up and running after two years and saw a demo and couldn't help myself lol.

You can probably download a proper Castle save file. A quick search didn’t work for me but someone here might have one.

It’s a million o’clock here and I don’t have the game installed so I can’t check now.

No worries dude. Appreciate that much. I'll probably just play it again.
