Trump meets with lawyers at the White House

President Donald Trump convened his legal team on Thursday to discuss the escalating investigation into whether his campaign colluded with Russia during the 2016 election.

The huddle, according to four people briefed, took place the day after it was announced that former FBI Director Robert Mueller would serve as the investigation’s special counsel.

One White House official said the discussion, which came the day before Trump leaves for his first trip abroad since taking office, centered around the nuts and bolts of how the investigation would work – and how the administration will need to handle the inquiry.

Among those in attendance was longtime Trump Organization attorney Michael Cohen, who came down from New York to attend. Cohen declined to comment when reached Thursday afternoon.

White House Counsel Don McGahn and his team, one official said, is urging the White House – and Trump – to be cautious in its comments with a special prosecutor involved. McGahn has begun explaining to aides in detail about records retention and potential requests, two people familiar with the conversations say.

One objective: to keep Trump from hurting himself any further. Two senior administration officials said they believed Trump’s letter firing Comey was a mistake.

....

Mueller’s appointment has put the administration in bunker mode – and there is a growing realization, officials say, that life in the administration will grow more difficult in the months to come.

Some aides have begun reaching out to lawyers to see if they need counsel, according to one attorney who has spoken to several of them. This lawyer declined to identify the aides because he said at least two may end up being retained by his firm.

Best part is that everyone in the White House knows what's like to be on the receiving end of that barrel. They'll go to sleep and wake up in the morning with this hanging over their heads like a scythe ready to come down at any time.

Begun? Should they not have been trained on this to begin with since all records are public records?

"according to four people briefed"

I love how these stories always trot out how many sources they can get without even trying. Like how many people were even briefed on this?

Was it WaPo that had a Trump Administration story in which they cited like thirty sources?

Wow, that's got to be an interesting circle of hell to have to occupy. Like diving into a pile of razor blades and trying not to get cut.

I hope all this will discourage bright hardworking immigrants to migrate to the US and the world moves on without the US.

US and UK really needs to be made an example of for having conservativism and facism rise into their government.

The only person in Trump's orbit who might rival him for "biggest piece of shit" status.

Their well-earned suffering is so rich and delicious. I'm loving their fear and discomfort. Bury these motherfuckers. Make them feel every twist of the knife they tried to stab in our backs.

Fuck them all right into jail cells.

The move of an innocent man

If he were truly innocent he'd have hired lawyers immediately instead of trying to break America so he could fit his bullshit in it.

His lawyers probably beg him to stop tweeting every single day. But he can't stop. He fiends for attention.

But hiring lawyers is something an innocent man would do too.

Everyone dealing with law enforcement needs a lawyer/lawyers. I mean, he's definitely not completely innocent, but his speaking with his attorneys isn't a sign that he's guilty.

Yeah. Same as the right to remain silence. Invoking it is smart. It's not a sign of guilt.

So if the Trump campaign does go down, where does that leave us? Pence will most likely be caught up in all of this, and won't be able to sub in. Does that mean we end up with Paul Ryan? I can't believe I'm saying this, but I can live with Ryan as president till 2021...

Maybe. The GOP will start eating itself shortly no matter what happens.

What is already said to be a chaotic environment, I could only imagine how it weighs on the staff when possible legal trouble is added to the mix.

If you're not on their side what other reasons does one deal with law enforcement in a way that causes them to seek legal help?

Some news analyst stated that Trump's letter for firing Comey actually waived executive privilege. Is this correct?
