WaPo: Trump revealed highly classified information to Russian foreign minister

exactly why i don't expect shit till we're past the midterm election, at best

Yep, nothing will happen before the midterms. If the GOP get blanketed in the midterms but barely hold on to a majority I can see them rushing to impeach to try to save themselves from getting annihilated in 2020.

Is "The president has right to that" the new "locker room talk"?

So much for checks and balances.

No he has the right to declassify information if he wants to. It's stupid and he should be held accountable for having the threshold for secrets that a fucking four year old has, but this isn't "locker room talk".

Not a lawyer but I was taught that the US, including the head of state, can't legally declassify intelligence provided by a foreign government without express permission of that foreign government.

McCain is dead wrong AFAIK.

EDIT: and even if US law provides some loophole, partner nations are going to fucking turtle up with the IC's credibility in the mud like that.

Well, campaigning for the midterms is going to start by the end of this year...

So I would say his time is running ever shorter.

John McCain: "The president has that authority and I respect it."

Edit: Bit late but still incredible.

For all those wanting an impeachment for this (or any of a thousand other reasons), you need to realize that impeachment is a purely political procedure. For purely political reasons it's not in the republican congress's interest to impeach.

The very best we can hope for is that he finally becomes toxic enough that congress will discuss impeachment to save themselves. They'd negotiate a retirement for him, with a full pardon from the incoming president. That's the best you can get. There is no 'justice' to be had here, this is politics.

I think we all know that Republicans are cowards, no need to hammer it home. What this does do is keep the heat on in the press, causing more slip-ups, so it's a "weekend reset" averted, at any rate.

What if the intel was provided by our moles inside ISIS?

The silver lining to this is now Trump's war on WH leakers has lost its last shred of legitimacy.

Well let's see... He (may) want to fire all of his confidants, has pissed off the IC, has no friends in Washington, and has decided to go to war with the press.

The walls must feel like they're closing in.

Hey McCain, you're 80 fucking years old and you'd still rather flush this country down the drain so you can maybe stay in power longer, than do the right thing.

What a piece of shit
I know, right? It's INSANE to me. If I was 80 and in this sort of position, I'd be in no fucks mode instead of cowering to the GOP's whim.

McCain didn't say that quote btw. I saw the interview with him on CNN. He said it was bad but wouldn't comment more before getting more information.

The above part is true. But any direct fallout would likely be from the source. That fallout being them not sharing information with the US anymore.

But if there is no formal procedure for the president to declassify something and he reveals it, there likely is no legal implications from the US. Which is a gaping issue. And like I mentioned in the other thread, is further proof that many critical aspects of US Governance is built around the Honor System rather than actual good rules/laws.

Yup. I think he's doing this on purpose, too. Someone has pulled him aside at some point and explained to him why doing this is a bad thing. It hurts our ability to gather intelligence and it goes hand in hand with his war on the intelligence community. He's trying to make America weaker.

You give his intelligence way too much credit.

- The President and his campaign are under investigation by the FBI for colluding with Russia.
- The President demands a loyalty test and fires the head of the FBI, the head of the investigation. Then threatens him to try and make him not talk.
- The NSA advisor was forced to resign for his connections to Russia
- The Attorney General was forced into recusing himself (LOL yeah right) for his ties to Russia
- The President gets a law firm to write a certified letter saying he has no financial ties to Russia. The law firm was named top Russian law firm of 2016.

This isn't smoke its a full blown fire.

impeach him... now

help us IC... please...

actually i bet this is part of the help but still

this clown is an active danger to our country every day that he steps in the oval office

It's fake fire.

Pretty sure he already said he doesn't plan to run again, but he could go against that when his term comes up.
Really? Well then, he'll go out having confirmed the non-secret that he's a weak fraud of a politician who served his party before the country.
