Some impressions from their list:
From 100-90 I've only played Dark Cloud 2 and Bastion. Never got past the sewer dungeon in Dark Cloud 2. Liked Bastion, but it wasn't memorable in any way.
89-80 played HZD, XC, and Destiny. HZD is to low IMO, but I'm glad it's at least on the list. XC is a great game and deserves to be on the list as well, I wouldn;t classify Destiny as a RPG, but I put over 500 hours and enjoyed every minute of it.
79-70 played both Castlevania and Jade Empire and both deserve to be on the list as well.
69-60 played Divinity, X-Com, Mass Effect, Valkyria, and Witcher 2. All great games, but I would say Valkyria Chronicles and Mass Effect should be higher.
59-50 played Chrono Cross, DA:I, Fable 2, and TES4. TES4 and Fable 2 should be higher and I'm glad Chrono Cross and DA:I are both on the list as I loved them both.
49-40 played Xenogears, BotW, Mass Effect 3, and Xenosaga. Never finished BotW, Mass Effect 3 should be lower IMO than 1. Xenogears would be in my top 5 games ever and I also enjoyed Xenosaga Ep1, but Ep3 is the better one IMO.
39-30 played Fallout, F:NV, Diablo 3, FFX, and FF. Not a fan of the original FF and Diablo 3. Really enjoyed Fallout and Fallout: New Vegas. FFX would also be in my top 5 games ever and is the best FF game IMO.
29-20 played Suikoden 2, DA:O, FF4, and TES3. DA:O is my favorite DA series game and really enjoyed the other 3 games on this list.
19-10 played Persona 5, FF7, Fallout 3 and FF Tactics. Loved all of them except Persona 5. It's a good game, but it's to high IMO. FF7 and Fallout 3 would be in my top 10 list of all time.
9-1 have played 5-1 on the list and all deserve to be on the list, but I think Skyrim is rated to highly on this list as well as FF6. Witcher 3 and Chrono Cross would be in my top 10 possibly top 5 depending on how i'm feeling that day.

The colouring gets top marks. The rest though....
Just tacking on a leveling system doesn't make a game an RPG

List is about as good as that cover art. Skyrim as #1 lol
Symphony of the Night is absolutely a side scrolling action RPG. It has all of the things necessary to qualify as such. It doesn't just have a leveling system, it also has visible stats that affect combat performance, and equipment/items.
You can play through the whole game as richter without any of that.
Also, I'll quote a surpreme court justice (kinda): You can't define it but i know it ehen i see it. This isn't it. Its a 2D side scroller with rpg elements.
These lists never go well because people take opinions as though they were facts.Also doesn't help that so many fans of this genre define it in different terms.
Personally my number one would probably go to Ultima Online. There hasn't an RPG prior or since that has made me feel like I was inhabiting a world, or character the way that game did. The way it encouraged whole communities to role play together was and still is remarkable to me since most other MMOs that came after made the role playing very surface level and the players had very little interaction in the game world.
I can understand why Elderscrolls would be #1 for many. In a lot of ways TES comes the closest to bringing D&D to life on screen, it's not quite as deep obviously as they have simplified areas over the years but few games offer the same level of freedom that aren't cheap PC survival games which pale in comparison with regards to content or ways you can utilize that freedom.

On the one hand, Skyrim is a game I loathe to its core, along with every Bethesda RPG I've ever played.
On the other hand it's undoubtedly one of the most popular RPGs of all time, beloved by millions. For a lot of people, RPG might as well be a synonym for Bethesda games because that's all they play in the space. It's the Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto of RPGs. Hate playing it, but I have to respect it's success.

Fully agree with this. I used to frequent a site that used to debate SotN's RPGness and I always believed it really was. It even has an equipment system along with the stuff you mentioned.

No contradictions there. Chrono Trigger does have great pacing and having battles with no separate screen transition has a number of benefits. On the other hand, the actual abilities in Chrono Trigger's combat are rather bland mechanically - almost every ability is a straight damage move just with different stats & areas of effect. Compared to something like the Etrian Odyssey series, your combat options are pretty boring.

Skyrim is one of my favorite games of all time. I started gaming on a Commie 64 too.. so I've played a LOT of RPG's.
Also, cover is kinda cool.
Aloy is drawn poorly, but it's a cool throwback style.

They probably feel that Persona 5 is better as an RPG while BoTW is a better overall experience, even if it doesn't quite excel in the "role-playing" aspect.

Ah I quite like this list
Obviously don't agree with all of it or the numbering but Im liking the inclusion of Dragon Age Origins, DA Inquisition, Mass Effect 1-3, Jade Empire, Persona 3, Divinity Original Sin, Dragons Dogma, Vampire TM Bloodlines, Icewind Dale 2, Valkyria Chronicles, TES Oblivion & Skyrim, Demons Souls, KOTOR, Baldurs Gate 2, Fallout New Vegas..
Theyd all be in my personal top 30 or so
Kinda lame seeing all three Diablo games on the list. Only D2 really belongs on a "best of" list.
Skyrim doesn't belong anywhere near the top of the list, but it's easily one of the most-played RPGs ever. Guess it makes sense it ended up at #1 if voting was involved. It's also one of the buggiest and most outright broken games I've ever played. Thank god I played it on PC and had access to the console to un-stick scripted events, or I'd never have finished it.
Also sad but expected to see Lufia 2 left off. I really wish more people had played that one.

Just remembered in the last thread I was trying to figure out a 20th spot for my RPG list. I forgot I played Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia a while back. I was super surprised when I found out it was an RPG. I was legit mad no one told me this. I would've played the Castlevania series a long time ago if I knew.
Order of Ecclesia needed to alter the loot drop rates though. It takes too long to level up your summons and it makes some side quests tedious. I wanted to play around more with the elemental system too, but I think I never was able to have enough money to fool around and buy whatever and I think some stuff was locked behind sidequests which most required fetching rare drops.

Man, I got a lot to say about this list.
Love that Shadow Hearts: Covenant and Dark Cloud 2 are here. Also glad that Phantasy Star IV is getting mad respect, even though I've never played it or its predecessors. It seems like a game that was overshadowed simply by not being on a Nintendo system.
I'm happy with the Pokemon games that are on list, but I disagree with the placement. I would literally swap their positions. I think Sun/Moon is easily the third best, but I'm hesitant to call it an absolute classic.
Same could be said for Xenosaga Episode 1 and Xenogears. But I'm still glad to see the former game getting love.
I have no issues with Awakening being on the list. It's got some big map design flaws, but I think it's the closest thing to a complete package over the other games.
Chrono Cross is on the list! I am still perplexed by some of the hate this receives on GAF.
Pretty happy to see Kingdom Hearts II at #25. That game was a very big deal for me.
I'm sad to see that Shin Megami Tensei III is nowhere to be found. I think that is a crippling omission. Did they really need to put Persona 3, 4, and 5 all on one list?
Never played Grandia II, but I have a very hard time imagining that it is better than Grandia I. So, I think that spot should just be reserved for the first game.
Not happy that XII missed the list, but Vagrant Story and Tactics get the respect they deserve. I have no problems with I, IV, VI, VII, and X being ranked highly. I'm actually not a big IX fan, so I don't mind that it's missing!
Radiata Stories kind of stinks. Not deserving of a spot whatever.

I generally can't find any notable omissions for the Western RPGs, but I thought that Fallout 2 was considered a classic. It's weird because 1, 3, and NV are on the list.

It's already better than IGN's list, as it has Everquest in a much more appropriate spot. I'm also happy to see Fallout 4 nowhere near this list.

Considering some of the stuff on this list, a mainline Shining seems pretty worthy.
But that is the sad case of being on a Sega console. The game is bound to be overlooked.
We are getting a 2017 thread, but it will be in late summer, going into Fall. Just shy of 2 years since KuwabaraTheMan filled in for the 2016 thread (which was actually Dec 2017).
Yearly threads are also dead I think. I fully plan on skipping 2.5 years after the next thread, and doing a 10th anniversary thread in early 2020 (the first Essential RPG thread was Feb 2010).
