Game Informer June cover: Top 100 RPGs of All Time

Honestly, my biggest qualm with it is how Fable II's on the list, but the original isn't. Sure, it was disappointing, but it's a better RPG than either of its sequels, as well as a better game.

Oh sweet, the worst two Pokémon games are on the list. In the wrong order.

The list looks like it can't make up its mind whether the games are ranked by quality or by impact. Stuff like the above and FF1 being on the list suggests the latter, but then you have games like Witcher 3 and Persona 5 near the top which are good games but didn't really influence the genre.

KOTOR 1 on above 2?
Planescape Torment not in top 10?
Skyrim?!

What an awful list.

To be fair, KOTOR I didn't need a content mod to make the game complete (it's not Obsidian's fault, but still). Also, while the writing is much better in the second game, to the point where it might be the best written story in the entire Star Wars universe, the characters aren't nearly as memorable as the original outside of Kreia.

Some questionable choices and omissions for sure. Why is
Final Fantasy
that high up at #33? I can only understand its inclusion if it's for legacy reasons, but that doesn't explain the much superior
Dragon Quest III
being literally 66 places behind.

Also no mention of
Breath of Fire
which is kinda sad. Btw for #51 you probably meant VIII not VII

I'm of the camp that games shouldn't be placed highly on Top 50/100 lists just because they are of historical importance. If they still hold up, that's obviously different.

How Many people really prefer playing Pokemon Red/Blue for Gameboy over everything released since then? Especially if they weren't 5-18 year old Gameboy owners when the first game released?

The biggest positive for Final Fantasy I is that you can beat it in 2-3 (non-marathon length) sittings. Especially if you are playing the PSP version. Nothing in the game stands above and beyond its many sequels. It is extremely simple even when compared to 20 year old JRPGs.

Pokemon BW2 is way better than Pokemon Gold/Silver (Hell at least put the Remakes of these, they're great remakes that capture and enhance everything here) and Red/Blue.

Open-world games seem to have been held to a higher standard since the release of Witcher 3.

With Persona 5, it got consistently the most praise and votes from Japanese developers for best game of the year in a year where FFXV and Pokemon GO released. (More of an achievement then influence which remains to be seen)

y people come out with greatest games all time every year. y not wait until no more games come out then you can make definitive list

also y do people always get so mad that someones subjective list doesnt contain things from their subjective list

I guess I have a different definitions of what RPGs are than Game Informer? Yes Horizon and Breath of the Wild have RPG elements, but idk if I'd put them on a list of the 100 best RPGs of all time.

I think Destiny and XCOM are weirder inclusions, since, while they have RPG-lite elements, they're very much in completely different genres.

I definitely have plenty of qualms with that list in terms of specific games being left out, but at the very least it managed to represent a large amount of both Japanese and western RPGs, from both the console and PC space, and hit on just about every significant era. So props for that.

But really, how do you leave Final Fantasy IX and have no Shin Megami Tensei game on the list? Also, Zelda is not an RPG...come on.

Breath of the Wild's inclusion and ranking seems really weird.

Like there's no way in a simple best game ever list or their GOTY list for 2017 that P5 beats BotW, but it's above BotW on this. It's like them admitting BotW might not really, technically be an RPG.

People should be less upset about BOTW on the list and more annoyed that it's missing gems like Alpha Protocol while simultaneously rating crap like TES: Oblivion and DA:Inquisition. Woof.

I might make this my new avatar.

Edit: WHAT? Skyrim as #1? *foams*

Fuckin skyrim at number 1.

#1 most popular garbage rpg of all time. I know why people like it, (especially with mods) but top of the list? no way.

These lists go over so well every time. :p

My personal list of a few but in no order in particular:
Nier Automata (it's an action RPG, it counts).
The Witcher 3.
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2.
Fallout: New Vegas.
Xenoblade Chronicles.
Dragon's Dogma.
Shadowrun: Dragonfall.
Bloodborne.
Dark Souls.
Mass Effect 2.
Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door.

A good list requires at least these in the top for me to think it is close to valid. Really need to come around one day completing classics like Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate 2 etc. so I can judge them as well beyond the initial areas (always something else that grabs my attention from those games).

Edit: Oh someone posted the list. Goodie.

Edit 2: Well that was awful. :p
