Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

Sheeet just finally getting to go through all the stuff. I wasn't expecting this many articles. I literally did as I said I would and CTRL + F to check for zen lol. Alas not in there, but so far sounding like a complete beast. Mandatory options for all gamers regardless of, I believe, TV etc is also a positive thing.

I'm loving all the detail. Seems like they really did a lot of work on this thing. That GPU is almost certainly sounding like it could be Vega (although not done reading everything), but so far I'm surprised I see no dig down on that info. I'm guessing they can't give us more on that till Vega is actually out or something?

Can't wait to get my hands on this thing!

BTW I made bets with folks. So PM me with what the terms of those bets were, and I will make good today. I don't go back on my word. That's my Ninja Way! :) Links would make it easier

Games will undoubtedly look and run better on the scorpio, the only real question is the price and if they keep making their exclusives available to PC gamers. E3 is going to be nucking futs MS has got to bring it when it comes to the games.

What I and many other's have been saying for a long time.

To me software matter more than anything.

However, potentially the most exciting aspect surrounding the CPU revamp doesn't actually relate to the processor blocks at all, but rather to the GPU command processor - the piece of hardware that receives instructions from the CPU, piping them through to the graphics core.

"We essentially moved Direct3D 12," says Goossen. "We built that into the command processor of the GPU and what that means is that, for all the high frequency API invocations that the games do, they'll all natively implemented in the logic of the command processor - and what this means is that our communication from the game to the GPU is super-efficient."

Processing draw calls - effectively telling the graphics hardware what to draw - is one of the most important tasks the CPU carries out. It can suck up a lot of processor resources, a pipeline that traditionally takes thousands - perhaps hundreds of thousands - of CPU instructions. With Scorpio's hardware offload, any draw call can be executed with just 11 instructions, and just nine for a state change.
I find this really interesting. Well thought.

It's all fun and games until they name THE PRICE.

That's all I want to know. This basically sounds like a pretty beefy gaming PC so I'm expecting north of $500 easily.

While it certainly has cool features for a console, will console folks be ready to fork over what will most likely be another "Sony $599" moment?

I'd *probably* jump in at $499 but north of that is a NO GO and I'll just keep on with my PS4 Pro and hope that Sony releases an add on for 4K/UHD disks/movies or the inevitable revision of the Pro with a true 4K drive.
Honestly I don't see this anything besides $400-$450

Ah goddamn it. :(

Well let's at least hope they take advantage of the extra memory though.
Sony just has marketing rights. There is nothing stopping Dice from optimizing Battlefront to be a showcase on the Scorpio.

EDIT: Read more of his tweets... I just don't get why people talk about stuff like this when they don't have a clue what it is...

Are your fucking serious?

Just stop while your ahead dude, you were wrong on your assumptions on zen, and your totally wrong on vega.

This reveal was never meant to be about the games, so I don't understand why you feel the need to bring it up here. It's a spec reveal by Digital Foundry. What did you expect, really?

(Xbox' lineup for the rest of the year is pretty decent actually. I can understand if you're not interested in those games, but don't act as if there are none at all)

I get that but to the average customer the "specs" don't mean anything without some sort of visual aid. Let me be clear, I've been waiting to buy an Xbox until this is out, so I'm not here to grief. just wondering where are the games!

hmm...this just makes me wish Sony waited and made Pro more beefy for my inevitable 4K purchase. Sounds like Xbox Super Pro tbh...very nice custom hardware, but I'm not into the ecosystem currently and better hardware doesn't exactly help that.

Good for the tech heads though and DF was a great source to get this ball rolling. I think Xbox really needs a super strong E3.

Leadbetter said it was Polaris in the video.

People talking about games... really? That's a valid concern, but absolutely no one in the right mind was expecting this to be an E3-like event where MS would announce Scorpio together with a bunch of new games and some other news. Everyone knew this was about Scorpio specs, and the fact that Digital Foundry would do the reveal makes everything even more obvious.

I do hope MS has some good amount of new games to reveal. But I won't expect shit about it before E3.

No, and no again. I'm still reading everything. Where does it confirm that it's Polaris, and not Vega? I have no problem admitting as much, but please show me where it has been confirmed. Not too difficult a request. :)

Oh wow, then I stand corrected if so. Link plz :D

Watch the fucking video where they clearly state Polaris. Which is the same as PS4 PRO but this looks like it's more based on thew new rx 580 refresh possibly which is still Polaris.

Wow. Forza running 4K/60 with ultra settings. I didn't think that would be possible with 6TF. It sounds like this really is a 4K machine.

Do you guys think the Scorpio could run Halo: MCC in 4k/60fps if it was patched?
You know what, I'm really surprised some of you guys are surprised? Forza 6 Apex run at 4k 60fps on a Stock RX 480 at Ultra settings, not all games running 4k demands a 12TF GPU....

Gears, Halo Forge, can all run at 4k on a RX480....So will Killer Instinct.....There's nothing surprising that the Scorpio could run these games native.....Not all games are as demanding as Deus Ex, Quantum Break or the Division....in some instances not properly optimized.

The part about this console being the first time ever the team was able to use profiling tools to measure bottlenecks and understand performance issues which directly fed into the creation of new Xbox hardware was a nice bit of inside info, truly built with software in mind not the other way round, this type of info would come off as PR if it was Spencer/Yusef, i just love Richards enthusiasm, if he;s hyped about it then im sure it must be worth noting.

Would be good to get a breakdown on the original spec sheet they spoke of earlier in the year compared to this.

Didn't need to be E3 levels obviously. But they didn't even show what we can expect games to look like on this new hardware. Look at how Sony showed off the Pro. The Forza screenshot was nice, but give us some footage of it and compare it to the XBone version. at least give us a time when we can see them.

That's what more flashy events like E3 or Gamescom are for. Today's reveals are meant for enthusiasts who are interested in this kind of stuff. :)

No.

Bookmark this post and feel free to serve me up some crow in a few years if MS's next major console does not involve a much stronger CPU, a ~doubling of TF, and faster/more RAM. I'd say those are all safe bets.

Hell, Scorpio already represents all that with the only arguable exception being the CPU. But there will be other options available on that front ~3 years down the road. You can rest assured that the next Xbox will not have a Jaguar in it.

Like how scorpio is over 3x the tflops as xbox one, with more then double the ram, with a theoretical 50% increase on dx12 instructions on top of the 33% increase in CPU clock speed. If your issue is jaguar that's fine but the point remains, everything spencer/Microsoft has been saying is we are beyond console generations now and these "upgrades" are what we can expect going forward. I'm not really sure what your arguing here

You are getting way too wrapped up in the customizations. It's a Jag, absolutely.

It's not a car with a new engine, it's a car with new tires. And maybe some tweaks under the hood.
This is how I see it.

That car anology was off because they didnt take out the entire engine. What they did was modify that engine.

If you modify an engine, the only way it becomes an entirely different engine is if you modify it so much its a whole new engine.

You take an engine out of a car and what you have left is basically a shell.

I think the biggest surprise is the new DirectX hardware, they way it was described it seems very impressive. It really is a DirectX-box now! Also the sheer amount of headroom leftover from a no effort port seems far and above anything that people were expecting. The common sentiment was that it might be able to hit 4k on existing XB1 titles with little to no power leftover. having 30%+ more to work with on top of having the best possible resolution means we are gonna see some great work the next few years.

It sounds like they are working to make the existing library all work at 4k. I cannot wait to pick up a new set and this as soon as possible.

I love how 4 years ago one of the most common sentiments was picking up a PS4 because of playing the multiplats on the best system, and how exclusives didn't matter. fascinating how these general sentiments pulled a hard 180, wonder why. I also wonder if sony starts putting in parity clauses if all the people who spoke out so strongly against the policy will do so now. Interesting times ahead for sure.

Overall I think the specs are really impressive. If what DF said is true, it looks like MS has taken several novel approaches to console design. I look forward to playing a ton of great games at native 4k resolution.

So is 6TF Good?

On a pc is 6TF good?

Like mentioned in the actual article, 6TF on the Scorpio will likely be better than an equivalent PC expansion card because of the ability to optimize with dev tools. Which is typically the case with consoles.

Calling it a "xone pro" kind of down plays it

It's a bigger leap from x1 to Scorpio
Then it was from PS4 to Pro

(This of course helped by the OG x1 being underpowered)

But it is more like an X1 Pro than "the Next Xbox". Mainly because it has a compatibility handcuff to the X1. I don't think he was disregarding all the specs; it's more that it's simply graphical upgrades with game design still needing to be geared to the last generation.

I am impressed with some of the things MS put into this thing, but at the end of the day it's best analog is to a more beefy PS4 Pro.
