Marvel: retailers and readers ”turning their nose up" at their more diverse titles

Hey, at least they can finally say DC's returnability wasn't the only issue with the industry. Everything here reads like they're only focused on the short term like usual.

Retailers, podcasters, journalists, artists and other writers are ripping this to pieces on twitter btw.

Yikes at that Peter David news. Terrible way to find out your marriage is failing.

Speaking of podcasts I'm recording Friday and thinking of starting a Black Lightning podcast.

It's got me debating selling my deadly class vol 1-4 trades and rebuying and continuing digital.
If you do that don't buy the trades because they cost quite a bit more even though they are sale. Image either doesn't pay attention when they price digital trades or think fans are dumb.

And everyone with a digital gap in their series can email marvel or pay full price.

What's done is done, congrats in fixing something I guess.

Oof. If anything, I think this just reaffirms that Marvel misunderstands the demand for diversity in today's industry. Characters like Ms. Marvel and Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle (who should be a case study in how to diversify your comics) were successes because the stories with the characters were great too.

Stuff like America Chavez, Mosaic, Red Wolf, Robbie Reyes Ghost Rider, and Occupy Avengers are ideas worth trying but Marvel really needs to do better at executing this stuff. "America #1" was one of the worst issues of any big two comic I've read in years. Hell, I'm even starting to sour on Miles Morales because there isn't much story to chew on
and not "because Bendis" either
.

Messi's boycott worked.

So it looks like Marvel will be keeping the free issue thing along with the digital version of the book you bought.

I think it was also that DC recently announced they would be including digital codes with their monthlies going to $3.99. Pressure's a bitch.

That article is just snipping quotes. In the full version what you posted is talked about.

That America #1 was so divisive. You either loved it or hated it it seems.

From the few pages I saw it seemed like the worst 'look how fucking cool this character is' shite that I have seen since the last time Marvel was trying to convince me Captain Marvel was cool.

It almost seemed like self parody. But the dialogue was so completely unfunny I think it was just badly written.

People at Marvel don't seem to know the internet exist, which explains why they don't market their diverse books to the people who clamor about them everywhere, and why they lament not being able to find artists because Wizard Magazine doesn't exist anymore.

The issue isn't finding artist, it's that they aren't as big of a pull anymore in today's market in comparison to the writers.

Don't worry, the book was cancelled and had it's last issue removed.

I read the most recent issue (really slow day) and it was just...atrocious. I have no idea how that book got greenlit in the first place.

Clearly it's over (it flat out says as much) but what do you mean by "last issue removed"

Let's check with an artist who doesn't do interiors for Marvel any more:
There's a lot I could comment on there but artists don't sell books when you don't provide an environment where artists will be on a book for more than a few issues.

Edit:

Had a #6 solicited and art done but it won't be released because it was the start of a new arc.

issue #6, which was supposed to start the second trade was solicited, but Marvel cancelled it.

That's a problem with the non-indie part of the industry and it's too late to address it now.

It's never too late. At this rate the industry will be dead before 2025. Pre-order system needs to be massively changed, Diamond needs to change and a bunch of other things need to happen but there are some things Marvel can actually do.

I don't think you understand that piece.

Marvel is saying that artists aren't the big draw they used to be: there is no Wizard telling you who the hot top ten artists are and hyping their work like there used to be.

Currently their position is that getting a book out in a timely manner is more important than sticking with a single big name artist through an event. As long as the art is good audiences are forgiving and don't mind a switch as long as the art isn't Ghost Rider tier. And to be honest they're not wrong here.

Second in terms of diverse titles, it's not enough that a book be diverse, it also has to be well written. But even when that's the case, the new readers the books bring in aren't coming in substantial numbers to comic shops.

Renew your Vows worked, Thanos worked, and Venom worked...because those books cater to the thirty something long time comic fans that make up the comic shop audience.

No, Marvel just doesn't do much to develop talent anymore. There's no "Young Guns" initiative for artists like Quesada used to do about a decade ago - which brought about the rise of artists like Cheung, Coipel, Finch, Granov, and McNiven.

Their recruiting method these days seems to be waiting to see who gets hot over at DC. Aside from Dauterman on Thor, and the occassional Marquez/Pichelli attached to Bendis I can't think of anyone recently rising as a Marvel artist. They just pick off artists like Kuder, Rudy, Asrar, Sorrentino, etc and have them turn in subpar work.

I guess Samnee counts but he's been slowly building since 2010 that he seems closer to that old guard of Marvel artist than any new developments.

Diamond is never going to change and I wouldn't say it's just a Marvel issue so DC would have to fix some things as well for a change to happen. I don't know what they would be able to do to change perception from customers though.

I brought up Marvel because they are the ones saying artists don't matter if the book come out on time.

That's really just the first page or so. I'm not saying that the writing totally turns around, but the everyone talks about how she's cool is thing goes away. It's just scene setting.

A) Do marketing so people know your books exist
B) Marketing the books, so people know they exist
C) The books, you need to do marketing to sell them
D) Hey guess what? It's marketing again, you need to do it
E) It's a five-pronged plan and all five prongs are marketing
F) ALSO MARKETING

Also: explain the pre-order system to people, or, even fucking better, figure out a way to make that whole thing as easy for regular people as you can make it. Do a fucking app for that instead of putting AR everywhere like you did for a couple of years. The ideal would be making it disappear, but, if you can't, just, work on that.

Also also: make the books cheaper you dunces. Comics are already bad enough value as it is, we don't need $4.99 books with nothing in them.

thats not really it. Marvel's accelerated shipping schedule killed the likelihood of any artists sticking around on any specific title and developing a relationship with the fanbase. Look at Capullo's fanbase. Batman fans love him and how big was he before he jumped on Batman? He's a pull now. This event he's doing is gonna be huge.

Marvel Artists get moved all the time from title to title. How many titles can Marvel say have a visual identity? Imagine if writers only got a chance to write one off issues or maybe three in one go before jumping to another title and back. Sounds like it would make the book a narrative mess right? Well, comics is a visual medium and artists jumping back and forth all the time as editors will it so titles with no visual identity are also a narrative mess but we typically don't see it that way.
