A Look at Japanese Game Sales on Steam - Spring 2017 edition [Steamspy figures]

Nier is another great success, and another good indicator that offering games in a uniform launch window across all platforms is more profitable.

Berseria also did very well at full price.

Both outperformed my expectations. Especially Nier.

Yikes those Atelier numbers are not good. Wonder if there is just not a market for those games on PC
Sadly KT Japan seem hell-bent on torpedoing their own chances on PC.

If you look at the May 2016 thread, Tales of Zestiria was at 142k. That was about 7.5 to 8 months after launch. We'll see where Berseria is after the summer sale.

It was at 130k early February so less than 4 months after launch, iirc it crossed the 100k milestone rather quickly, Berseria is at 80k after two months.

SC takes FC and ramps it up and then the 3rd is coming out this spring! Don't miss out!
That's great to hear! I've just entered Zeiss, and every character so far has been wonderful. It's got a nicely laid out world that it indulges in, and I love it. Music's top notch as well. I'm excited to see where it leads.

The game has an excellent conclusion chapter that the whole game you're playing builds up to. Enjoy it!

I am a fan of the series, but there have been an absurd number of these games in a short time. These games are 30+ hours long and have released every year since 2005 in the US and 2001 in Japan. Even if you don't want to count the Mana Khemia games, we have had 8 Atelier titles on the PS3/PS4 since 2010 in the west.

they are pumping out too many imo. They should take their time. Sales are getting lower an d lower for each of their series. Don't know if Koei is going to let them though lol

Xanadu Next is another victim of the publisher page glitch. The actual Steamspy ownership number is 5k. For those who already thought that 11k was terrible, sorry to be the bearer of more bad news!

Downright criminal. If only those rabid and obnoxious Call of Duty-fans each bought a copy. :p Apart from COD though, the other games which came out at the same time of Xanadu Next didn't help its sales -- Dishonoured 2, FFXV, Watch Dogs 2.

I wanted XSEED to do well so we have some hope to get the Crossbell games localised, but releasing it in the middle of busy month with little to no marketing... :-\

XSEED seems to be a company that greatly benefitted from being ahead of the curve when it came to Japanese games (and especially JRPGs) on Steam. However, they haven't transitioned well to the very competitive status quo.

Trails in the Sky Second Chapter is slowly working its way towards respectable sales, but they have had a lot of misses in their releases these pass couple of years.

Which other Tales sequels are you refering to exactly?

I don't think there's anything it could be compared to as the second main Tales release on PC

Well, Berseria in Japan performed below Zestiria.
On top of that, Berseria performed closer than your claims according to kswiston numbers.

The irony of all this is that the pioneers of publishing Japanese games on Steam were basically two Atelier fans who localized an indie Atelier-like.

And to this day it is a product with higher standards, higher sales, and more pride in the game itself than actual Atelier on Steam.

Published by Sony. Highly doubt it's coming

----

Those Nier sales warm my heart. Series finally getting the shine it deserves

Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 were published by Microsoft and Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor Edge was published by Nintendo.
Unless a game is owned/first party developped, dont assume something isn't happening because of distribution deals.

I'm starting to think Virtua Tennis 5 is never happening, so Virtua Tennis 4 needs to come back to Steam.

atelier numbers for sophie and firis are not good. I don't believe they are selling any better on console either yipes. Gust you gotta step it up..

To be fair Firis launched around Nier:Automata, Horizon Zero Dawn, Ghost Recon and Zelda/Switch. Firis is next on my list but not until I finish Sophie first.Seems like a game that would do better in a slower period, that being said I hope it doesn't impact future titles because they are quite good.

eh? I liked Shallie but it was kind of off. Sophie was fine but felt... unsatisfying and confusing with all the character events happening sporadically and the time system not being there but a day and night system replacing it. Firis.... you can look at the OT >,<. I have a feeling Blue Reflections and Nights of Azure 2 won't be that good either sales wise.

If they lose the market in Japan that would be troubling.

If gust just had a little more development time on their games instead of just pumping video games out as fast as they can, I feel they can make something real solid. The only Atelier I've enjoyed a ton recently is Ayesha.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Neir had an amazing start, and it's not even a week of tracking yet (steamspy takes 3 days to show sales IIRC).

Tales of Berseria had a good start, especially considering it didn't come with a free game this time. Hope it reaches 100k before it slows down or they start doing sales.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 seems to have an okay start, hopefully it keeps going.

I don't really care for Senran Kagura but I wonder if it'll pick up, it's also pretty early tracking I think. XSeed isn't seeing great results lately so I hope it does okay for them.

Is this good, or is it bad? I really hoped we would have gotten ports of the Lunar games by now if Gungo were pleased with sales.

It's not great honestly, it's been on sale long enough to see where it'll reach without a bigger sale or price reduction. They've talked about bringing more to Steam but it doesn't look like anything is happening so far, so maybe they decided this wasn't big enough? I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't.

I'm very surprised that the Umihara Kawase games got over 10k owners. I had been watching it a lot during 2016 and it never got over that amount since it came back on the store thanks to Degica.

It's not like the game wasn't available on PC previously.
It had a crappy port back in the aughts.

I'm always curious when I see these numbers, how do these games do on console? Like how is Berseria and Atelier Firis selling outside Japan on consoles?

Cool to see Nier and Berseria doing pretty well without offering any major sales or incentives. They also seem to have hit their current numbers in an abnormally short amount of time compared to a lot of the other Japanese games that also aren't attached to a big brand or have less apparent Western appeal, despite being $50-60 games.

Square-Enix should consider a super late port/remaster of Nier 1 for $20-30. Was that one of their Unreal Engine 3 games, or was it a custom engine?

Custom engine. I think I read it uses the tech they used to make Blue Dragon but I don't remember where. But yeah, definitely a custom engine.

I often wonder if KOEI Tecmo are attempting to distance themselves from Itakagi's work and NG in general.

Getsuei Gakuen -kou- 3.000 (1.000)

This game literally is not localized into English. It is a raw release of a visual novel that is only in Japanese, from menu language to achievements.

~3k people own it. Is this the growth ceiling of a) Japanese-fluent gamers + b) Folks who will buy anything as long as it has trading cards?

Edit nvm just checked. this game doesn't even have trading cards. The mind boggles.

They aren't similar at all but I'm shocked Phantom Brave has more sales then Stranger of Sword City. Looking forward to all the NIS SRPGs coming to Steam hopefully.

I did my part for Xanadu Next after the thread a week or so ago about it. Shockingly low numbers right there.

It's pretty good for a horror game. Unless you expected Resi5/6 types of sales.
Yeah, it's not too bad and will keep selling throughout the year plus will pick up during sales.

Berseria also didn't do too badly and was comparable to Zesteria so not sure what people expected. That's a decent amount of sales on PC and it's probably at least 50% of the PS4 sales (probably too optimistic on PS4 side).

Nier also did really well considering sales of the first game. Good showing for better games and publishers.

KT may rot in hell. Their approach to the PC market is terrible and their sales reflect it. I love some of their games but PS4 is a better bet.

I really think NISA should fast-track a Disgaea 5 port and forget about releasing them in order.

It was fair enough releasing the first one, but to then wait a year only to release Disgaea 2 seems like a load of wasted effort. At the rate they are going, by the time they get round to D5 (or whatever is the most current version) it'll be old hat by then.

Resident Evil 6 holding onto the best selling capcom game title is the best.

Also the MGSV sales are crazy, especially when you consider it hasn't been in any bundle and it's discounts hasn't been anything too crazy either.

releasing all at once would hurt their sales. They should speed it up a bit but Disgaea is quite a long game...
